Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums

Gastric bypass (RNY) support. Ask about the procedure, dumping syndrome, the bypass diet, nutrition, weight loss, and complications.

  1. Hey folks - my main reason for seeking RNY is my type 2 diabetes. I think I am a bit of an outlier given my history with PCOS, the young age I was diagnosed with diabetes and started on insulin, and how little improvement I've seen despite following a strict ketogenic diet for over a year. My PCP has told me I might still need insulin after surgery, which is fine, but disappointing, but he thinks I will have a much easier time keeping a good a1C. My biggest fear is that I will also be an outlier among people who have had the surgery and will be right where I am after going through all of that. Did anyone else with really resistant diabetes see improvements? Thanks.

  2. It's been a minute since I updated anything, but here it is! I am now in a size 5...never thought I would be in that size without a 2 in front of it!!! Still trying to cope with the reflection in the mirror, because she's so foreign to me still. I have moments of just being down, because I no longer look the same. I miss some of the physical attributes I used to have. I feel like i'm in middle school again when I look at myself...flat chested once again (never thought that would happen). Contrary to the hype...SQUATS DON'T WORK (I lost that attribute as well)!!! On the good side...i'm much healthier and now have a normal BMI and have much more energy. So all in all, even …

Okay I went from sleeve to bypass on December 31, 2018, I have lost a total of 35 pounds since then and have not lost any more... I work out at the gym, and I literally count my calories and eat healthy. I also am worried that this surgery is not gonna work because unlike most people who have had bypass I can eat anything and everything ( I don't though) I never get sick, and I am always hungry. Is it possible that I am just an unlucky person that will never lose weight. I did not go through a second surgery to lose only 35 pounds...has anyone experienced this?

Hi. My surgeon just prescribed Carafate and I'm wondering if I should wait one hour before drinking anything, or if that is just for eating? Thanks!!

  5. I've been on purees for 2 weeks, and can only tolerate ricotta and Greek yogurt. If I try egg, hummus, or cottage cheese I feel tremendous pressure in my pouch like I ate an entire pizza!! I'm trying to eat 1-2 ounces and eat slowly, so I don't think it is the volume or speed. Tomorrow I'm supposed to progress to soft food, but I'm really thinking I'm not ready, and that I should step back to just shakes for a few days to a week. Opinions? Anyone else have trouble progressing??

(Apologies in advance if this is the wrong place to post this) Just wanted to introduce myself and thank you all for letting me troll your Q&A's [emoji1] the last few weeks . Was hesitant to introduce myself until my insurance pre cert came thru and I had my surgery date which I just got today!!! Been a long 6 month preparation but I am SOOO ready for this. Anywho, just wanted to say hello and a sincere thank you to everyone who has taken the time to post questions and answers. I'm nowhere near the anxiety level I was previously before finding you guys! Looking forward to sharing this journey with you all[emoji111] [emoji106]

Hi Everybody, First of all, thanks so much for sharing so much good information and your experiences! I'm schedule for April 23rd Roux-en-Y and I'm still trying to prepare logistically. How long before you felt well enough to back to work? Especially a desk job? I'd love to hear your experience. Thanks! xo, Artsie

  11. A couple of days ago, I posted about the horrible pain I was dealing with. I thought I was having stomach spasms. Well the pain got so bad today along with the vomiting, that I just couldn't even take it anymore. So I decided to take a trip to the emergency room. They did a CT scan and ultrasound, they saw that my gall bladder was distended and that I had an ulcer where my small intestine and new stomach connected. They decided to do an endoscopy and found that I had a 2 inch ulcer and admitted me to the hospital to start immediate treatment. My advice is if you feel like something isn't right within your body, get some medical help as soon as possible...Don't procrastina…

  14. Started by Fletcher Lives,

I had my surgery 6/5 and I feel good so far! My highest recorded weight was 256.12 lbs. The day of surgery after following the 10-day liquid diet I was down 13.8lbs. I was diagnosed with NALDS last fall. Hopefully The RNY will help me with my other commobidities. Please share your journey on this thread with words of encouragement and support.

  15. Hi, GradyCat, and others. You mentioned in reply to another post that I should be consuming 600-800 calories a day. My nut didn't give me a guideline, but I am 4 weeks out this Wednesday. Still on shakes and puree. Does that calorie recommendation still hold? Thanks

  16. Started by Alikiinz,

So I was feeling really good about myself and having dreams I was doing sit ups. I then thought ok well let’s give it a try. I did a few before on Friday. This morning I woke up with a bit of pain in my stomach. I just had Easter dinner yesterday though, so it could have been that. It’s stupid because I’m not supposed to lift more than 10 lbs, but for how long! My check up with the dr is on the 24th and my surgery date was March 11th. I’ve lost about 40 lbs. I’ve gone to the pool once so far. So do any of you think I pushed it too much?

  18. Knowing how judgmental people can be and already having heard negative comments about WLS, I decided to keep my surgery very private, Coworkers are starting to comment on my weight loss now, however, and some have asked, "What are you doing?" My standard answer is truthful - that I have made some major lifestyle changes that have been ongoing for months and even years. I tell them that I have given up wheat, sugar, soda, alcohol, caffeine, artificial sweetners/colors, additives, and processed foods. I also tell them that I have stepped up my exercise a lot (which they see, because I wear my tracker and try to get as many steps in as I can during a work shift.) Usually by…

I've got a question for you WLS and bypass vets out there. I've been told by my surgeon's office that I can't have caffeine in any form for an entire year after surgery due to it causing additional acid reflux. But most everything that I'm reading online is saying 30 days after coffee is all right, so long as it's limited to maybe a cup a day. I'm one of those that HATES decaf (it's got the worse aftertaste ever for me) and I only drink a cup a day in the morning to get me going. My job is very, VERY boring. (Data entry, sitting there inputting new accounts all day, no listening to music or anything to make the time go by faster.) My question is, is my…

I had VSG 3/2015 after 2 small bowel obstructions, severe bleeding reflux, esophageal stricture my surgeon thought conversion to RNY would be best. My insurance denied the surgery. I wrote a fully detailed letter and they overturned the decision. I am approved and waiting for my surgery date. Super excited to be free from this bleeding narrowed esophagus and I am also getting the hernia next to my old repaired hernia fixed.

  21. I'm just wondering how we prep for colonoscopies and drink those 4 quarts of disgusting liquid if we only have little pouches that don't hold that much liquid? Is prep different after bypass?

  22. Hi All: Is anyone documenting their journey on YouTube? I love watching videos of weight loss surgery patients documenting their process. I'f you are, could you share your "channel" as I'd love to subscribe to you if you're doing this? I took a few videos first for myself as I think it will be great to look back on a year+ from now. Then, I decided I'd go ahead and share publicly as the ones I've watched of others have been a tremendous help to me. I'm not good at talking (much better with a keyboard) but oh well. It's kind of fun and I think will keep me motivated along the way. YouTube - Little Kansas Kitty

My bypass was done 4/3. On liquid diet and doing OK. Occasional discomfort if I sit a certain way, but otherwise I don’t feel that different than pre-op. I haven’t gotten a “full” feeling after a Protein Shake. I am hungry at times, but getting liquids down has not been a chore. In fact, I forgot about sipping one time and chugged a little on a bottle of Water and there were no consequences. I find myself wondering if I could fill my belly the same as before surgery. I’m grateful for everything, but right now I feel like I just continued my pre-op diet. I know this is strange to say, but I expected a struggle and I am a little concerned there isn’t one. Thoughts are c…

Hi everyone :) I was wondering if I could ask for some help please? A quick introduction to my weight history. SO from a young age I was always overweight. Primary school I was the chubby girl, in high school I was the fat girl and in university the weight piled on even more until I got to around 16 and a half stone where the weight maintained itself. Then in the year of 2016/17 I went on an extreme diet and exercise regime where I lost ALOT of weight by myself, in the beginning it was great I felt in control and very motivated but then by the end of 2017 I had lost too much weight, I was severely depressed, lacking in nutrients, I had no friends and my we…

Seeing as today was the start of my pre-op diet, I decided to make some other changes. They may seem minor to some, but it was hard to do... Today I broke up with almost every food based Facebook and Instagram account I have followed over the years. Restaurants, recipe sites, foodie celebrities, corporate food accounts, and food festivals all got the axe. The only ones I kept were ones that were things that I could realistically see myself continuing to use after surgery (like my favourite hot sauce) and ones that aren't solely food based. Next will be to remove myself from any recipe newsletter mailing lists. And any plus size clothing stores' mailing lists too. …

  29. So I wanted to pick your brains. I just got approved for surgery and am currently waiting on my date. In the meantime I don't want to drive my nurses nuts with so many questions. I was dead set on having the sleeve but I have to have RNY now. For all of you kind people: 1) How hard is it to take pills post-OP? I'm concerned about the size of vitamins. 2) after approval, what all did you have to do test wise? I know all drs are different but just curious. 3) what can I expect my life to be life after surgery? I have 3 wonderful kids and a great husband but I need to prepare for the good, the bad, and the ugly lmao.

It's been quite the journey and is still a struggle almost daily but it feels great to look back at the last 9 1/2 months and see how far we've all come. No more losing for me here forward. Hi! I had surgery about 9 days ago, and I’m starting to think I’m broken. So many others describe having a hard time getting their liquids down, getting in protein, and getting in enough calories. I can easily get in 50-60 Oz of liquid, 60 g of protein (from shakes), and I’m eating about 500-800 cal a day. So far I’m following the program except that I can eat a little more strained cream of chicken soup than 1/2 cup - usually about 3/4 cup - 1 cup and that is where I limit it. I eat stevia flavored plain nonfat Greek yogurt sometimes too - but I limit that to 1/2 cup. I only eat 3-4 times a day and no snacking besides occasionally some no sugar popsicles. But so …

I work overnights, and the most activity I have most nights is a lap around the unit every once in a while. Otherwise I sit through the night. Do you think I could be back to work quickly? I'm hoping not to have to take too much time off work if it's not absolutely necessary. Thanks in advance!!

I wonder if anyone who is losing the weight noticed that when shopping for clothes my mine is still thinking big sizes.
