Hospitals are starting to abandon the time-honored drill for surgery patients— including fasting, heavy IV fluids, powerful post-op narcotics and bed rest—amid growing evidence that the lack of nutrients, Fluid overload and drug side effects can do more harm than good. http://www.wsj.com/articles/patients-bounce-back-faster-from-surgery-with-hospitals-new-protocol-1427739292 This new protocol is being used in colorectal surgery, procedures for hip fractures and joint replacements and surgeries for bladder, pancreas, liver and breast cancer.

One of the subjects that seems to pop up on this board is losing hair after gastric bypass surgery. I never experienced hair loss after my RNY surgery. I am 28 months post-op. I attribute this to a supplement that I take called Juvenon. This supplement contains 1000 mg of amino acid Acetyl L-Carnitine and 400 mg of Alpha Lipoid Acid. It also contains 300 mg of Biotin. I have been taking this supplement for over 10 years primarily because it helps my lung function (around a 200 point improvement in my peak flow). I have noticed that it also has the property of halting my hair loss due to aging and and also stopped my hair from turning white. That is why I recommend…

Had my WLS on Nov. 11.15 and I lost like crazy the first 2 weeks, I know that was all water weight. Then I would not lose anything up until a week ago and I gained 4 pounds and im just sitting there. I walk a mile a day and do Extreme hip hop step 30 min. every day. I am only eating soft foods at ½ cup 3-4 times a day. I am also 100% Vegan. I am getting in my water and my protein. I called my Nutritionist and pretty much got no help. I am really starting to freak out, and of course I live in the mountains where there is no physical support group. Can anyone tell me if this is normal? Or has it happened to someone else? Am I doing something wrong or did the WLS just NOT wo…

I had my surgery on 12/7 and I'm down 20 lbs, but I am always thirsty!. I used to drink ALOT of water before surgery and now I'm not able to drink as much. I don't have diabetes (I know that's a common sign of it) I do sugar free Popsicles a lot and sip on water throughout the day but still can't seem to quench my thirst. Any suggestions??

Would like to know how many RNY'ers have decided to follow a plant based diet post op. How are you feeling, healing and how is your energy level. What are your go to foods in each phase? What is your surgeons advice if you have decided not to use animal Protein?

Hey people, random question here... Any of you at some point start feeling super tired really fast and/or had that "I wanna faint" feeling ? I've been experiencing that the past week and not sure why. Everything I consume is hitting me extremely faster than before. Like wine, or coffee. Within minutes I'm tipsy or super caffeinated. ( wasn't happening before )I completely forgot about the Vitamins and have started taking them for the past 5 days but I'm not sure if that's what's causing this. I'm 6 months post op and hadn't had any of these issues before.

It can be pretty tough finding younger people to relate to gastric bypass. I'm carly! I'm 27 but yes I look a lot younger. I originally had the lapband put in January 2010 and now almost six years later I just had it revised to a roux en y on 12/22/2015. I'm still super sore on the big incision on my left but didn't get a drain or anything. Really hoping this decision helps me get my life back

I was wondering how much everyone's Dr. or nut. is telling them to eat at a time during a meal. I was at 1/2 cup from 2 weeks to 6 weeks. I'm eating at 7 weeks 2/3 cup at a time of food. My Nut. wants me to be at 1 cup of food per meal by 3 months. Does this sound right? I thought I wouldn't be at 1 cup until at least 6 months. I do get full quicker with meats, but Soups, I believe I could eat more.

Just wondering how much I should eat I measure my food still at 1/4 cup but with oatmeal I can eat about half a cup and am able to eat 5 oz triple zero yogurt ..does this sound ok?

So, when I eat a meal of protein, I can consume about 2.5 ounces comfortably. When I have a vegetable meal I can consume 3.5 ounces comfortably. Is this because veggies are watery? I realize how dumb I sound, but really, is that why? Because meat is denser/heavier?

Hi there. I am 5 days post op gastric bypass . I have had a few issues and just got out of the hospital yesterday. Apparently the blood thinner they gave me in surgery caused a reaction within my body causing me to actually bleed. So now all that old blood is coming out of me via bloody bowel movements. It has been super scary . I have done a lot of praying but my surgeon assures me everything is ok. The bleeding had slowed down a lot now and that is great. Hopefully it is done soon! While in the hospital I had to have 6 bags of blood transfusions to keep my levels up. Once they stayed up I was able to go home.. On Christmas Day! I go back on Monday to have blood work don…

Merry Christmas Eve everyone! I've been lurking on the forums for a while but this is my first time posting. My surgery was the 21st and I went home the next day. I've been using my incentive spirometer, walking, and getting all my liquids in. I'm curious when other people started weaning off pain meds? I'm allowed to take 30mL of Lortab every four hours but today I've been trying to stretch it to the 6 hour mark. I've also been wearing my abdominal binder pretty much non stop and it's a Godsend. Hope everyone has a merry Christmas and thanks for any insight! Ashley

Hello. It's going to be a month since I had the surgery. I'm 29 years old and having this surgery was about the idea of wow, being able to lose weight, not be controlled by appetite. If you follow the 4 rules of my surgeon then I'll get my weight loss down without being hungry!! It seemed like a dream. Well it has been hard. I did practice eating without drinking before surgery and it was difficult at first, I didn't notice how much I would drink to get what I was eating down. Well this past week I started solids. It has not been fun. I notice that even tho I chew my solids, I am still doing something wrong because I throw up after. I have not had dumping. I eat wha…

Just wondering. I left a message with the dr today still waiting to hear back. I have been having these lightheaded spells. A few times I have had to sit down in fear I was going to hit the floor. At first I thought it was what I was or wasn't eating, but now it happening more frequently. My diet has been very consistent often repeating the same meals. I did try ramping up the calories a bit thinking that may be the problem. Upped the water intake to 90 oz a day (a lot of chugging going on there). I'm 7 months out and several different places suggest dumping, but again still taking in very little sugar, no gluten, limited carbs (usually only in veggies and fruit) nothing …

5 days post op. I feel awful. I don't know how I thought I'd feel, but I feel yuck. I'm keeping track of my Fluid intake to stay on top of it, so I'm not dehydrated, but I feel like I have the flu. Which I totally could because my kids are totally sick. My baby has had a fever for the last three days. I'm dragging myself around, feeling nauseous and wiped out. Okay, complaining over. Maybe I just need to watch a Christmas movie. Merry Christmas!

55 male in southern Wisconsin. Was banded 2010 and it failed, had band removed and revision to rny on 10/26/15. I'm struggling with failure fears. I lost 40 pounds quickly after surgery, by 11/19/15, then stalled. Been stalled since then and trying to not lose hope as the lap band failed. Could use some guidance from someone non judgemental who will be truthful through this journey. Thank you!

So it's me again expanding on one point of my"everything is disgusting " topic. So, the stool (diarrhea, liquid lava) is awful. My doctor prescribed a stool softener to take twice a day but it is more of a stool liquifier. About two hours after I eat breakfast is when it starts and it goes throughout the day. To keep things consistent, I have eaten the same each day. I am going to withhold my dose of softener to see if this helps. Any other suggestions? Please, my "arse" hurts.

Hello! I'm just starting my journey and will be starting the Kaiser 12 week class on Dec 1. Has anyone else gone through this program? If so, would you mind sharing about your experience and what the process is like? Do you have to get approved afterward like other insurance providers? I'm very new to all of this and Kaiser. I've been watching a plethora of YouTube videos (such a great resource!).

So my surgery date is finally almost here!!!! I have one problem! I have a terrible cold for the last two weeks! I have been hacking up a lung and my nose is all stuffed up! Will they postpone my surgery because of this? My lips also broke out in three different spots with cold sores/ fever blisters. I have been out of work for the last three days because my boss thought I should stay home and get better there instead of taking the chances of getting others sick. In a pickle! Waiting to see what time they scheduled me for tomorrow because that is the only thing they didn't tell me! Nervous for sure but definitely going to go through this!!! Hopefully I will see you all on…

I think I am finally on the road to recovery. I had gastric bypass surgery Monday. I am able to walk around my apartment and am taking my pain medication less. I am still on the liquid stage and had a few questions. My nutritionist said that if I will fill a slight push in my chestwhen I'm full. I haven't had that sensation. Is that because I'm not really "eating" in mainly drinking. I'm taking this process serious and don't want to mess up. I'm scared, is that normal too? Thanks in advance for your support.

I had the lapband Nov 2009 . My SW was 242 the lowest weight I got with the band was 218. The band gave me problems , it was difficut to swallow lean meat and I had awful reflux. I became pregnant May 2013 my weight was 230. After pregnancy, I was back at 242 and had to have all the Fluid removed from my band because the reflux was unbearable and I couldnt eat solid eat without vomiting. After the band had no restriction I gained 10 pounds in 1 month. So I decided to inquire about revision. I had revision consult June . The doctor gave option of sleeve or bypass and explained both thoroughly and could decide later. My insurance required 6 month diet and nut…

Ground beef is the same. I have been able to handle pepperoni and deli ham. I eat lots of refried Beans and cheese as well. I am getting a little board and up for any suggestions.
