Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals

Recently moved from Texas to Kuala Lumpur...have had one appointment with surgeon here who is happy to do my lap band. He's only done 15 of them and that makes me a bit nervous. He is the only surgeon I've been able to find that does them at all (I did find one who wanted me to be his FIRST!!!)... With the exception of traveling, any ideas? :help:

Hi! I'm new here, but I've been lurking for a couple of weeks, doing my research. I'm looking for information about doctors in my area, Richmond, VA, who do the lap band surgery. Is anyone from this area? My endocrinologist suggested the open (RNY) a couple of years ago, but I just couldn't face the idea of having my plumbing rerouted so drastically. It scared me too much, but the lapband sounds more reasonable. I've been to the informational meeting with a group of doctors, but most of them have lots of experience in RNY. I just wanted to post my experience so far...I attened a seminar on Wednesday night for Dr. Abkin and Dr. Bertha and let me tell you I was impressed. First off it was held at a local hotel meeting room so there was space for about 100 or so attendees. Now most of the seminar was a repeat for me as I have in the past year been to 2 other info seminars and I have been researching lap band for over a year but none the less I was impressed. Marco the OR nurse the first spoke was very informative and answered all questions. They also had 2 guest speakers that have already had surgery and while I was disappointed that neither had the lap band they were also very informative …

Is anyone familiar with any of the bariatric surgeons in Columbia, SC? I had started the process in Atlanta, but will be moving back to my home area in a couple of weeks and will have to find a new surgeon. Thinking about Dr. Tribble, mainly because his brother was my mother's heart surgeon and he was AWESOME. Silly, huh? :guess

Can anyone please let me know if they have any experience with Dr. Krish (short form) in Dade City/Zepheryhills? I know he is associated with Dr. Grossbard, and from other posts on here, not so good things about that doc. I have been approved for surgery, and just need to come up with remaining $ (2300) for the surgeon/hospital fees. I urge you to give me all comments to help me decide. Thanks so much. PS: if I decide to go to another doc, do I have to reapply with my insurance for approval? IF so, how long does that take? :help:

I'm currently jumping through the hoops my insurance requires before surgery and hope to have the procedure sometime in January. I'm working with the Jewish Hospital Center for Weight Loss Surgery in Cincinnati and the procedure would be performed by Dr. Elliot Fegelman. I was wondering if anyone had Dr. Crookes for Lap Band? I live in Orange County and well my doctor refered me to go to USC for Lap Band in LA and was refered to Dr. Crookes. I have checked online for more information on him and they seem positive but not alot.... So im asking here...like Does he help you get your testing and paper work done fast to insurance?? Helpful in working with you after surgery? and?? Is he expensive?? I'm on a limited budget and well... some are like 15-17k and then jump up to 20-25k. I know my insurance will cover most of it (80%) but still 20% is alot for someone that single and not large income. Thanks all...

I will be having surgery with Dr. Cobourn in Missisauga Canada November 7th I truly felt confident with him but now see who has slippage and erosion many are his patients. WHat to think? Tracey

I am still in the researching phase of my journey and have yet to select a doctor. I think I'm getting real close to it being Dr. Spivak based on experience, price, etc. I am a self pay. Any insights, suggestions, etc. anyone has is greatly appreciated. -Rachel

I am scheduled for surgery Dec 29. I wanted to see if there is anyone out there that has used him and what was your experience?

I have went through all the steps recommended by my Dr, now I am being told that I need to see the dietician again, and see the psychologist again. What a pain, since I was told everything was being sent to insurance, and now I find out that it hasn't been sent in. This is such a let down... Anyone else had this experience?

Does anyone know him? I was banded by this Dr. and was wondering if anybody else had him also. I find he is a good dr. just don't put enough saline in band!!!:whoo:

I came across a doctor in my travels in Oregon. He is located in Coosbay and does the surgery for 10k self pay: DETAILS: Surgeon $2000 Assistant $500 Anesthesia $1000 Day Surgery facility (including band cost) $6500 These fees do not include consultation, pre-op tests, Education Class, or other miscellaneous charges. Has anyone used Dr. Spivak with Unicare Insurance? So far the only testing that Unicare is requiring is a psych evaluation to determine fitness for the procedure. They also asked for medical notes from my pcp and any other information I feel is necessary to prove medical necessity. I thought I would send them pcp notes showing high cholesterol and borderline diabetes along with my orthopedic notes showing degenerative disc disease and arthiritis. Spivak has a form that you fill out to show all the diets you have tried, and when and how much weight you have lost/regained. I go to his seminar on May 12th.

What type of pre=op diet and testing does Dr. Spivak do? Thanks.........

I have an appt. tomorrow with Dr. Spivak. I went to an information seminar last fall and found out my insurance will not pay. I have BCBS Health Select group 38000. There is an exclusion clause for wt. loss surgery. I started out thinking I wanted to have RNY, but as I researched more about both I have decided to go with lapband. Does anyone know if Dr. Spivak is using the new AP band??? Since I am a self-pay I would like to get the latest band. Thanks for the help. Angie

Just wanted to give an update on my surgery. I went to Tijuana, MX on October 18 for lap band surgery by Dr. Lopez and his staff. I had an excellent experience. Everyone was very nice and helpful. Anything I needed all I had to do was ask. Dr. lopez was very nice and also his co-worker Dr. Carmen Calleja. I am now home and have had no complications to date. i am eating a full liquid diet without difficulty. I am having a hard time judging how much to eat, but i am sure that will come with practice. I just wanted to let everyone know about my experience. I was a little hesitant about going to Mexico right before the surgery because of some things I read on this …

I was really shocked to read pattychat's thread about Dr.Mejias.I first saw Dr.Mejias in July of 2007 and I had my Lapband on Oct 02 . I had no problems what so ever. His nurse Janet and his office manager went out of their way to help me with scheduling ,insurance and preop appointments.I would recommend Dr.Mejias to anyone. It sounds to me like pattychat has a problem with paying her bill.And in this world nothing is free.

He called me and I am giving him a chance to fix the problem now that I have personally talked to him.

Dr Owen has Coastal Obesity here in So CA. He also has a cash pay using Dr. Quiroz clinic in Tijuana, Mx at the CosMed clinic. Any feedback from anyone? I had my surgery in august of 2005 and the last fill was in november 2006. I have only lost 50 pounds for 1 thing but the big problem is my Doctor is no longer available. He is in private practice now and my insurance wont cover him. They referred me to a Dr. at Rush in Chicago but he wont do fills or even see me again. He refers me back to Dr. Shayani, who did the surgery. Does any one have any suggestions. The insurance co is not much help at this point. Dawndreamer in Palatin Illinois

Hi, all. I am interested in any feedback or info on surgeons in the Austin area. I have been to a couple of informational seminars, but am hoping to learn more from actual patients before I commit to a specific surgeon or clinic. Also, any other Austinites getting ready to get banded?

Did anyone have their surgery done by Dr. Nilesh Patel? He works out of Austin, San Antonio, and south Texas. I spoke with his office today, and they said that he is an insurance pay only doctor, meaning, if my insurance pays 80 and i pay 20%, then he just takes the 80 and i don't have to pay the 20. sounds great! i asked his receptionist if he was new and just trying to round up business, but she said no, he has been doing this for a while and is a really good doctor, and that he does it that way because he believes in the procedure. So I just wanted to make sure that he wasn't too good to be true.

Anyone use this doctor in Elkhart IN? I have my surgery on 12/17 with him.... he seems wonderful but any experiences shared would be appreciated.

I am currently considering LapBand Surgery. My BMI is 48 w/diabetes,hypertensio,sleep apnea and asthma. 5 years ago I survived a stroke. Has anyone been to Dr. Kwon. Does he take Medicare? What do I need to do. At the end of the month I am going to a seminar. :help:
