Hello, I am a newbie here. I have been researching Lap Band surgery for quite awhile now and have decided it's the right choice for me. I'm a self-pay patient and live in Nashville, TN. I'm trying to decide between Baptist and Centennial Hospitals to have the procedure done. I have researched them both, met surgeons at both places and feel very good about the quality of both choices. I'm pretty risk-averse and as a self-pay patient, I feel pretty strongly that I would want to buy BLIS insurance to cover myself if things go wrong (erosion, slippage, port issues - plus problems stemming from the lapband that insurance may not pay for because they excluded the original p…

I am currently using Dr. Praham Mora's office in Prattville, Alabama. I really like him and his office staff. This office staff are great. They are patience with you and answers all your questions. Dr. Mora is very thorough and I am thankful for him being that way. I would rather have a doctor who knows what they are doing verses just cut happy. I believe very strongly that Dr. Mora knows what he is doing. Tara who is the individual I have been dealing with since trying to get the lapband surgery. She has handled everything with the insurance company. I also like the fact that Dr. Mora actually attends the monthly support group meetings and the h…

It is so hard for me finding a doctor. Doctors in-network for me are Philip Chin, Kelly Francis, Atif Iqbal, Thomas Nguyen, Sami Hamamji, Mark Minkes, Eric Pham, Philippe Quilici, Kevin Reavis and Kambiz Zainabadi. They show in-network, however otherss that I have call who show that they are in-network no longer are! it is so frustrating.... I have e-mailed doctors and they have not returned my e-mails and I have called only to get transferred around and then I am out of time because I am on my lunch hour at work. If anyone knows anything about these doctors I would appreciate all the info I can get. PLEASE HELP!!!

There is nothing worse than getting an email from someone who is uninformed and REALLY negative: You Can't Not Covered You Screwed up This is NOT aimed at anyone in particular, but I feel like I want to address it. The site should be a support site where people share experiences. In therapy, they teach people to say "I feel....."...."In my experience....." When you start with the words "He can't"...blah blah blah....you are killing someone's dreams in that moment. Do you realize how bad that feels to someone who isn't STRONG like me? Some of what I have read borders on cyber-bullying/abuse and is really ridiculous. We're adults! So at least if you are chat…

NEED YOUR INPUT MY FRIENDS! Hello Friends I had my consultation with a pretty well known and 5 star rated dr. today in Orange County, CA. Here's what occurred: 1. Although I am 238 lbs at 5'2, he thought I should just do Protein shakes? Huh? He also talked about the fact that my insurance only pays him around $900 for the surgery. Is this something I need to know? I think not. 2. I had a RY lap gastric bypass 9 yrs ago. He said there is no way to redo a gastric bypass NOR have a gastric sleeve. Is this true? 3. He said I will only lose around 25 lbs with a lap band. Is this possible? If so, why? He has no tests yet as he ordered them today after we …

Greetings All! So the good news is I am seeing a very good bariatric surgeon on Friday. My primary made the referral and Tricare Prime approved my visit to the surgeon. On Friday, I will do the psych eval and see a nutritionist. To my surprise when studying the doctor's site I saw there is a $3,500 fee NOT covered by insurance. Is this new??? The whole idea of having insurance covered surgery is to have little out of pocket. I run my own small company and I have no clue where I will get that money from. Is it me or does this seem like double dipping (from the insurance company AND the patient)? My credit isn't great due to tough business conditions and the lo…

I thought I would post about my experience with Dr. Snow. I was banded on Jan. 15, 2010. He did the Single Incision surgery. So I had only one incision about 2 inches long in my belly button and one small incision (less than 1cm) where they put the liver retractor. He puts mesh on the back of the port so there is less chance of port flipping and less pain on recovery. I did not have any port pain and very little incision pain. Lots of gas pain, but I hear this from lots of banded people. He is so encouraging on my check up visits. He answered all of my questions before surgery while I was making my decision and all of my questions since. I was nervous about the…

Hi, there. I am scheduled for a private pay sleeve in a few weeks in Dallas. I am middle aged and approximately 50 lbs overweight with a BMI of 34. I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and acid reflux so I am in great shape. The fact that my weight is carried around my middle almost guarantees that I will develop diabetes if I don't do something. Even with all of these medical issues I, like many, am very nervous about the whole surgery thing. You know, the old "what if " syndrome...what if I develop clots, what if I get an infection, and the latest thanks to morning television...what if I catch fire on the table? The fact that I will almost cert…

Dr. Umbach is fantastic. I've seen 3 different bariatric surgeons and he completely comes out on top. I wish he performed my lap band surgery, because unfortunately I suffered complications from it. Dr. Umbach completely listened to all my fears and concerns and I can't even describe how well taken care of I was pre & post surgery. He's very involved, I feel like he really knows his patients. His office isn't treated like an assembly line like other doctor's offices are. He spends as much time speaking with you as you need, you never feel rushed and if he senses something is still on your mind, he wants to hear it. His staff and the hospitals he works with are gr…

I was just banded this morning. The University Point Outpatient Center in West Chester was wonderful. All of the staff were friendly, none of them judged me for having this surgery at all and they did everything possible to make me comfortable while I was there. I arrived at 8am, my surgery was at 9am, I woke up in recovery at 11am and was out of the facility a little after 12. I had a little nausea and slight discomfort upon wakening. I kept waiting for it to get worse, but it never did. I did bring a pillow with me for the car ride home to splint my incisions (5 in all) and I am glad that I did that. I was eating ice chips, drank some apple juice and walking before I w…

Hi, I'm Michele and I'm new here and starting with Kaiser Monday August 1st. I have a doctor's appt with a doctor that referred my friend for surgery. My friend emailed the doctor and asked her to take me as a patient and she did. But I'm haunted by the fear I won't be accepted for the program and the surgery. My BMI is just around around 40, 39.9. I've been fighting my weight my whole life. I don't have any major co-morbity issues, my BP is normal, no diabetes (thanks God) but I have terrible joint pain and mild arthritis and some days I can barely bend my knees. I'll be 51 the end of August and have my heart set on this surgery to help me live a different life. I hat…

i'm with kaiser so cal in los Angeles. i've completed the options program and am now jumping through myriad pre-surgery appointment hoops in order to get my surgery referral. i just wanted to give everybody with kaiser so cal a shout out to say THEY ARE NOT IN CONTROL OF THIS PROCESS. be aware that you will need to be extremely pro-active in terms of your bariatric journey or an already long and involved waiting process will be made even longer and more involved. also be aware that kaiser is farming surgeries out to ancillary facilities because they can't handle their own bariatric surgery load. this adds further complication to an already overly complicated process.…

I highly recommend Dr.Cywes. He has been nothing but spectacular since I was banded. I have nothing negative to say about him and the people at his office. They really care about you. Dr.Cywes and staff are really there for you when you need that boost of help. I think there are only a few people that touch your life and for me thats Dr.Cywes. I think the band is the tool but you need people that will help guide you on this journey. For my that has been been my family, Dr.Cywes and the GREAT people at his office. I got my band Jan 15th 09 and I have already lost 85lbs. V/R Gabby

I don't know if this is the right place but I came to VSGT today to discover I had a message from "nobody" who joined less than 24 hours ago, has no posts, no info about them-nothing. In the message was a link to another message on OH about a "price opportunity" (I am guessing here in the US) with a facility trying to meet an insurance certification requirement offering a limited number of special price VSGs. My first thought was that this was spam and everyone or several ppl got it. My second thought was (if it just came to me) is that someone here wanted to anonymously (for whatever reason ) let me know. I don't know why it would have to be Anon though. Also, I don't kn…

I was banded May 11 by Dr. Ahmad and I couldn't have been happier with him. From the very first phone call to find out about informational meetings to being discharged from the hospital I felt like I was in the most competant hands possible. His wife, Seema is the most amazing woman and knows every one of his patients names, surgery dates, keeps up with our progress. I had my surgery at Mather and even the nurses and aides were gushing about him. Several told me they had waited to apply to get on his service. He was not the closest surgeon to my home and I travel over 45 minutes each way for an appointment, but honestly I would travel 3 times that distance for him.

Hello everyone, I'm sure this information is in the 'Considering Dr K' thread, but it's so huge, I don't even know where to begin! I hope to be banded by Dr K in the spring. I've contacted their office, but haven't done anything official yet, as they said I wouldn't need to schedule until the end of the year. Anyways, I have logistical questions: 1) Will I need a car while I'm out there for surgery? The best rental I can find for 3 days is about $200. I don't know how close the hotels are to the office/surgery center (are they two different places?). 2) I live about 7 1/2 hours away. I'm considering driving, but I don't know if I'll be comfortable enough to …

Hello, Still doing research. Both the hospitals close to me are Centers of Excellence, but there are only 3 doctors in the whole county with a certification by the Association of Bariactric Surgeons. Does this certification make a difference? According to their website, the level of certification indicates how many surgeries the doctor has performed. No one has mentioned this certification in the posts I have read. Thanks Robbie

Any experiences with this surgeon, good or bad? I have my first consultation with him and the nutritionist this Wednesday and I am so excited. I have a co-worker who got sleeved two weeks ago by this surgeon and he had complications from the staples being too tight. He's home now, but still in a lot of pain. Dr. Kligman said that was a first for him and he usually has had great success with the thousands of surgeries he's done over the past like 9 years or so. Please share if you know anything about this surgeon and/or their bariatric program. Thx!

Today I told the office I was originally going to have surgery through, that I was not having my surgery with them. A series of events and giving several chances helped me make my decision. Has anyone switched doctor's/clinic/hospital..etc? If so, for what reason? I've heard so many wonderful stories, but I wasn't having any pleasant experiences with the 1st group. Even though I'm having to start over, I'm very happy I've switched..so far.
