Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals

Reviews and experiences with weight loss surgeons and hospitals. Surgery costs, hospital stays, and what to expect.

  1. Hello, I was wondering if you could advise why i would be having sharp pains around the receiver. Mostly when I drink liquids. It seems to be getting worse. My original Doctor is located in another country and the only thing he has to say to me is it's acid. I am getting very worried about this issue.

  2. Started by losing_the_band,

I want to have my insurance pay for a revision from banding to sleeve because of issues with my band, but I'm not getting my hopes up (my BMI is currently 33). I want to be prepared to self-pay if I need to, so I'm trying to find a surgeon that is priced in my price range if I need to pay out of pocket. I'd like to stay in Washington, if possible, but am willing to travel if I can't find a good, affordable surgeon for self-pay. If all else fails, I'll head to Dr. Aceves in Mexicali, Mexico. I've looked into Dr. Billing at the Puget Sound Surgical Center, and I found Dr. Srikanth's website last night. Anyone know their prices for self-pay?

  3. Started by seniorsleever,

I was sleeved 1/24/11 at Innova Hospital in San Antonio, a self-pay patient, and was treated like a queen. The people were all nice--even the receptionist came to check on me after surgery! The facility is super-clean, the diet is prepared individually for you, and the equipment is all state-of-the-art. I highly recommend this facility.

So far my experience with Dr. Williams and his staff has been very good. I am still pre op at the moment but have a friend who received gastric bypass from Dr. Williams and he was very happy with his surgery and care.

Has anyone used Dr. Michael Perez or US Bariatrics in Ft. Lauderdale? I'd like to hear your experiences - good or bad. I looked on obesityhelp.com, but there weren't very many recent entries in the patient feedback area. I live in Key West and am looking for a doc in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale area to perform the procedure. I'll probably self-pay, so any feedback on that would be appreciated also. Thanks - Dani

Dr Huacuz was arrested monday in TJ for medical negligence on a 2006 procedure. IF IT SOUNDS AND LOOKS TOO CHEAP, IT PROBABLY IS !! Tj doctors are in a price battle, but lowering quality. I dont want to generalize, but its the 3rd TJ doctor with problems in the last couple of months. There are really good doctors in Baja, be it Mexicali or TJ, but theres also cheap doctors. Be careful, do your research. Tj, Corvala, Mexicali, Dr Abril or Dr. Aceves, a little bit pricier, but arent you worth it ?? A $4499 huacuz.pdf

My husband is ready to go to Mexico for surgery. We are trying to finalize what doctor he is going to use. We have it narrowed down to 3- Dr. Kelly, Dr. Rodriguez and Dr. Aceves. They all have very good reputations. Dr. Kelly is the most affordable, but we are not looking for the cheapest. Looks loike there are a few websites you can book Dr. Kelly through. Can anyone give me direct contact info. Also, it says you can stay in a recovery house after surgery for the last night. My husband would rather stay in the hotel or hospital. Please send me any infor on these doctors. Thanks, Vicki

Hi all. I just got this email from a local bariatric center: "Thank you for your interest in our program. The estimated cost of the Sleeve Gasterectomy is $35,300 . This price includes all of your pre-surgical appointments, the surgeons fee, the anesthesia fee, the hospital fee, BLIS insurance (insurance coverage for 90 days following your surgery), and one year follow-up with your surgeon...." She goes on to give me some names of places that might finance me. Am I crazy or does this sound exceptionally high?? I was under the impression that the surgery would be under $10,000 but I can rarely get anyone to tell me how much they paid. Could I get someone to gi…

  15. Started by bunny,

Dr Taylor did my surgery and he and his team were great The surgery was $9000 for me because I paid out of pocket, with private health insurance it's only $4950. That cost includes nutritionist visits, psych visits, the hospital stay...everything. And since I was self pay I didn't have to jump through any hoops, I made my appointment the day of my initial consultation, there was about a 3 month wait until the surgery date but that's to be expected. Very professional doctor with a wonderful team working with him.

Anyone use him? What has been your experience? He is on my ins. =) He seems nice but very quick and to the point. Of course when I went in for the initial consult they had med students there....the one who came in initially was the husband of someone I work with at church. Kind of uncomfortable since I don't know them very well. I was more uncomfortable than I would have been with only him and I forgot most of my questions. ugh.

  20. Started by Neoteric Verve,

Or if anyone else has this answer. Aetna I think requires that bariatric surgeries be performed at an IOQ (Institute of Quality) hospital. On their site the only two that are IOQ in Nevada are North Vista and Desert Springs. My problem is that my surgeon of choice is Dr Teng. I just ran through a barricade to get past the bill owed. That has been cleared up now. I want to stick with him because he took out my gallbladder and did a great job. Thing is, he operates out of MoutainView and Summerlin hospitals. I know he has had patients with Aetna so I'm just curious.

  23. Does anyone know of this doctor? He is with Advanced Laparoscopic Surgical Specialists in Bardonia, New York and performs surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, New York. I attended the information seminar and did the 6 month diet through them. I had all the pre-tests done, met with the nutritionist and psychologist, now I am just waiting for approval from the insurance company. Just curious if anyone had any experience with this group.

  25. I'm only two days out from surgery, and I'm doing as well as I could have ever expected. Uncomfortable at times, but that's it. Dr. Harrison and his team did a great job, and the nursing staff at LVH Cedar Crest was awesome. They took great care of me.

  26. First i am new registration here. So hello everyone. I just found out will have to self pay for lap band based on my insurance coverage. So I am looking around cheaper alternatives to the costly surgieres in the States. Is there a list or sticky somewhere of doctors that perform this service ? I understand that research and due diligance should still be performed no matter what. Trying to search google is a waste of time . I have been searching around her and found 2 names abut couldnt find a central location for info . Thanks in advance

I have had a consultation at CIBO and they can do the procedure very quickly which kind of scares me...shouldnt there be a longer wait...regardless I am looking for positive stories from CIBO patients

I highly recommend Dr. Smolik. He is my surgeon and did a wonderful job. He and Dr. Cahalan are partners and their staff is also fantastic. They are well organized and give you a folder containing all the instructions and guidelines you need to help you with the pre-surgical and post surgical diet. If you have a question, they are more than happy to help. They stress that they want to be part of your medical team for life -- once you have the surgery you can visit with them long after surgery. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have about Mercy Center for Weight Reduction.

I'm considering Lap Band surgery in Cancun Mexico and wonder what others who have been there have to say. There are two places I'm considering. Cancun Gastric Band with Dr. Fernando Ceron or Ameri Med Hospital (Lap Band in Cancun) with doctor(s) Ariel Ortiz, Lee Grossbard and Nick Gabriel. Please let me know if you've had any experience with these hospitals and doctors or any other places in Cancun.

  41. I've done an info session at NYU Langone and so far am intrigued by the surgeons there and hope to have Dr. Ren do my VSG. I'm very anxious to know if anyone has had surgery done by any of the NYU Langone staff and what the experience was like from day one to surgery. I'm also really concerned about the hospital stay - how long did you stay, and did the staff seem attentive (that's a big deal to me). I'm scheduled to meet with Dr. Ren, and the nutritionist on 6/22.

  44. I love this Dr. I went on a few consultations and found him to be the most attentive caring Dr in the field. Actually he and his nurses are extremely professional. I have referred others to him since having my surgery on Feb 2nd and they are also pleased. He is located and associated with the weight loss center at Cedars Sinai. I was very pleased with my stay at Cedars after the operation I would recommend this Dr to anyone

  45. Dr. Hanna performed my lapband surgery on June 8th, 2011. Dr. Hanna is extremely professional, knowledgeable, and intelligent. He really knows what he's doing and what he's talking about. Above all, Dr. Hanna really cares, and he and his staff bent over backwards to accomodate my needs. He is a kind, compassionate person as well as a great doctor. I felt safe, well-cared for, and calm the entire time. Not only that, the surgical staff at Ukiah Valley Medical Center are superb. They were all professional, kind, and knowledgeable; I really feel blessed to have gotten surgery there. It was worth the 8+ hour drive from my home town. Thank you so much for everything…

  48. I was all set on Dr Teng doing my surgery and today I found out that I can't because of a HUUUUUGE bill my old insurance didn't pay. Now I can pay it off but not before this year (or next, it's $12k). So I made an appointment to see Dr Umbach for July 5th. According to his office, I can do some things to satisfy Aetna and get the surgery approved in three months. Or I can do the customary six months. Minor bump in the road but from what I have read here Dr Umbach is also an excellent surgeon and that I should worry none.
