Hi all- I've been doing A TON of research and reading a lot of these forums. I've read encouraging and discouraging stories... I'm in the beginning stages of getting approved for bariatric surgery. Based on what I've learned so far, I believe I want the sleeve. Although I've never been diagnosed with anything officially, I know I already have a low metabolism issue. I'm maintaining 271 lbs on about 12,00-14,00 calories daily. I've tracked this, and I know my standard diet...its very frustrating when people think I'm in some kind of denial. TRUST me- its not easy and I dont eat 80% of the food that I want to- because I KNOW I'll gain weight... Many people have …

As I was rushing to get to work today, it was time to put on my shoes. I didn't see my 24" shoe spoon around to help me put them on. I reached down and slipped my two fingers into the heel and easily slid my foot into the shoe. I could have been doing this for weeks and just didn't realize it! I was sooooo accustomed to using the shoe spoon, I didn't realize my surgery had eliminated another issue. I am more and more grateful EVERY DAY for this second chance at a wonderful life.

I recently accompanied a friend to Tijuana for her to have Gastric Sleeve surgery with Dr Jesus Martin Lopez. As with me he did an amazing job and my friend is doing well. I got to take a picture with Dr Lopez as I did when I was sleeved on June 15, 2015. I am 8 months post op and have lost 90 pounds. I have about 30 more to go. HW 268, CW 178, 5'0" tall and 52 years old. I highly recommend Dr Lopez and his staff.

This is the Low BMI slow losing encouragement thread. Here I am yet again at a month long stall. Almost 4 months out and down 35 lbs. I'm doing everything right and getting frustrated. I lost weight lots of times in the past and yes I couldn't keep it off but why is this time so much slower. It doesn't make sense to me. I'm excited to get this weight off and start my new life!!! Comparing with low Bmi'ers is always reassuring.

Hi everyone, Before I begin, let me say this, Please don't get angry at me because I remember thinking that people my size complaining about this were ridiculous and trying to get attention. It made me angry that they called themselves fat when I had so far to go. But after being fat for my entire life, it is so hard to see anything else. I just wanted to ask if anyone else is in the same place I am. I. Have lost over 150 lbs. according to the doc I am beginning to be underweight but my BMI is still 19.8. I don't know what to do because it is so confusing to go from "lose weight or you'll die" to "you need to stop losing and maybe even gain a few lbs" P…

You know when you have a vacation booked and u can't wait for the time to arrive but it's also bitter sweet because as soon as it comes is as soon as it ends? Well I like to compare this to the vacation that won't come to an end... And the count down to march 7th seems like foreverrrrr away Since I have entered my 26th year (and heaviest) of my life I have experienced constant anxiety especially hypochondria, sleep apnea, and the most unhealthy relationship with food thus far. I have complete faith that this is all going to subside as soon as I am healthy mind, body, and soul. I have since gotten over the anesthesia fear and the complication fear.. I've moved into th…

Some of you may remember that just 2 weeks after my sleeve surgery, my son was shockingly diagnosed with Stage IV Rectal Cancer with metastasis to his liver (5 liver tumors). My world shattered. I didn't eat. Didn't drink. Barely got out of bed and wasn't functioning in any normal capacity. I was just at the point where I was trying to learn how to be healthy with my new body and failed every single day. I received so many words of encouragement from this community, so much support and so many helpful suggestions/tips. And even when I'd sink in my chair, something someone said would remind me of what I needed to do - because I was no help to him if I couldn't help …

My sleeve surgery was April 15th last year but I went to Mexico for the first time last February when I was at my highest weight and I wasn't even looking forward to my trip. Fast forward to this February and I'm down 96 pounds and super excited for Mexico in less than 2 weeks!Last years swimsuit - size 20. This years swimsuit just a plain old size large!!!! For a long time I was at a size US11 women's shoe, but in the two years leading up to my surgery, I often bought size 12s or even 13s just so I could fit them width-wise. Because of this, I am not EXACTLY sure how big my foot actually was at my highest weight. About 4 months after surgery (last March) I was measured for a new pair of running shoes for a 5k I was doing. By that point I'd already lost over 100 lbs from my starting weight and was measured at an 11 (10.5 on one foot, even 11 on the other). I recently needed shoes for a new job (second job) and realized I'd bought shoes that were just too big. I asked the clerk at payless if I could be measured and she meas…

I must be the luckiest guy alive as it pertains to this surgery. I'm a week out tomorrow. I'm tolerating soft foods perfectly. I had a scrambled egg with with my Protein shake this morning. I've had 0 nausea. I had slight pain for 2 days.. I've already been on 3 bike rides over 8 miles each. I feel like a billion dollars. Amazing energy... and I think the sleeve is doing exactly what it should. One egg filled me basically for the day, sipped on all my fluids all day. I literally feel like I had nothing done, except my stomach is smaller. Everything tastes amazing, including my Protein shakes, and Isopure drinks. Don't tell anyone but I even has a sip of my wife's Pino …

So, I'm 2 months out. Kiddo had a procedure today, so he got to pick where we went to dinner. He chose BD's Mongolian BBQ. Score!!! I loaded up my bowl with chicken, shrimp, an egg, edamame, a few veggies, chopped peanuts and lemon/mustard sauce and I have leftovers now for days!! Days!!!

I can't begin to tell you guys how excited I am to finally be under 200 pounds. When I met my husband in 1996 I weighed 150 pounds. 19 years into the marriage I found myself at 267. (At one point I weighed a whopping 298 but was able to lose 30 of it on my own and keep it off). I suffer from PCOS and not only was it hard to deal with my weight issues, but the side effects made it nearly impossible for me to ever really feel like a woman. The androgynous side effects of PCOS were an absolute killer for me. I'm a Greek girl and my given name is Kleopatra, so to walk into a room and tell people my name was often hard for me to do, my self esteem has not been very high …

Hello All! Ok so today I spent all day at my daughters Winter guard competitions. I posted a picture on FB talking about how I was the "glam mom" for the team (hair & makeup). After posting this picture my inbox BLEW up! I guess a lot of people haven't seen me since I've lost the weight. I don't normally post full body pictures. I got called "tiny" and "amazing". TINY! I had to go back and look at the picture again. It's like I'm just now seeing my new self for the first time. I'm starting to see what everyone else sees. It's the weirdest feeling! I don't think I'm "tiny"' but compared to the 267 lbs I was last year I see what they are saying. I also noticed I need a …

Calendar reminded my that it has been 3 years since I got my lapband and I thought I would check in. Total lost is about 70 pounds, but it does fluctuate. I am still wearing size 34 pants (down from 46), although this holiday season has made them a bit tight, I should be back to normal in a couple of weeks of regular eating. Still one of the best decisions that I have ever made, especially since I was diagnosed with Prostate cancer(currently in complete remission) a couple of years ago, the weight loss made the accompanying surgery and radiation much easier on my body. Lapband is/was not a cure for me, it is a tool. I still wrestle with emotional eating although that is…

I think mine qualifies as a success story . Yesterday was my 9 mth surgiversary and I am now at 169 lbs. That's a total loss of 82lbs from my HW, and 70lbs from my SW. My weight loss has been a slow but steady 1-2 lbs per week since November, and as long as it's coming off I'm ok with that. I still struggle with evening snacking (crunchy, salty snacks) but I've met with my dietitian and psychologist (both members of my bariatric team) and they've given me some good strategies for working on that. I've joined a gym and work with a personal trainer 2-4x per week and I'm finally starting to see some good results with that. Hopefully I can reach my goal of 150lbs by mi…

Before I had surgery, I asked my doctor and nutritionist what weight I should be targeting. I started at 333 almost exactly a year ago and was 304 on the day of surgery in August. They did some calculations and said that based on average success rates with RNY, they would be happy if I were to get down to 220. That sounded like a really low number to me, and so that's what we went with even though a normal BMI would put me around 190. Well, today I weighed myself and I'm 220!! I'm still losing 10-15 pounds a month and now that I'm here, I don't think that the normal BMI weight is crazy or impossible anymore. I've decided to just keep doing what I'm doing and let my …

Just returned from our vacation, 10 days including 7 days on a cruise.... Best news is, I let my band be the boss just as any other day...limited my food intake and controlled my hunger. I did not deny all the pleasures available to me, just did not make a pig of myself. I went on a Volcano climb, 3,800 feet straight up rocks and mud through a rain forrest...there was a couple there that were 42 years old, then everyone else was in their 30's and 20's....I'm 63 !!!! Our guide said not only was that a first, but also the fact I was one of 4-5 leaders way out in front setting the pace where everyone had to keep up with. On another stop, I jumped off a 45+ foot cliff…

I remember the days when I had to run out and buy a new outfit for an event because nothing in my closet fit. I would end up with something that I not only hated, but paid a lot of money. I felt so uncomfortable in my own skin. Last night I had a dinner and needed to buy stockings. I walked into the store and spotted a dress. My closet and wallet know that I didn't need a new dress. The dress was Perfect for the dinner. How could I refuse the $29 price tag? I couldn't ????! HW:305 SW: 263 CW: 165 Here is a before and after.

This month is the five month anniversary of my sleeve surgery. Next week is a big company meeting. I had set a personal goal of achieving 50% weight loss by that date. I will hit that goal or be within a pound of it. My rate of loss has seemed slow to me but after looking at the charts I realize it has been pretty steady with great progress, just a bit slower than I'd anticipated. So far I've been very pleased with every aspect of this journey. Here are a few of my victories and observations post surgery. Victories: Weight loss - 55 pounds - halfway to goal Clothing sizes - Went from (men's) size 46 slacks to 40, size 19 shirts to 17 1/2, size 4xl t-shirts to 2xl …

I am 10 lbs away from goal, but I am probably what people would now call thin. I am 5ft 9in and 150 lbs. Here are some experiences lately that I have found interesting: - At night when I sleep on my side, my knees knob together when I try to have one on top of the other. It never used to be a problem with there was a thick layer of padding in between my knees. - When I sit, my legs cross so much easier! - People are nicer to me. Now, I have many feelings about this that I won't go into, but it is a fact. People just notice me more and are kinder. For example, all of a sudden these moms that I see all the time (but am not necessarily friends with) want our…

Congratulations, you have done so well but you should know that this next year is probably just as important, maybe more important then year one because this is the year you either really stick with the good habits, or start backsliding. Then, a year later, for my two year check in he congratulated me on maintaining and said... you should know this next year is really imprtant, because sometimes people start regaining They change their habits and lose that "feeling of restriction " On my third year follow up they focused alot on checking if I had reflux or GERD , which I don't (that is about when it starts showing up for some). He again asked me about my feeli…

After 10 years of watching my weight creep up up up into the 200s and finally topping out at 260, I am finally seeing a 1 before my weight again! I really like it here, I'm never going back!!! Another 8 lbs and I'll weigh what I lied and told the DMV I weighed LOL

For those that did get to their goal weight and are now in maintenance, how much weight did you gain back from your lowest weight ever to your "maintaining" weight? (My lowest average was 118, I have been maintaining at 120-123- I follow low-carb and been trying intermitten fasting")

I am almost 5 months out from having my sleeve and have lost 83pounds. I was telling this to a friend and she mentioned that she guessed that was about what my sporty younger daughter ( age 9)weighs. So I weighed her. She is 81 pounds. Wow I have lost an entire small person. I tried carrying her for a few minutes yesterday and was exhausted. No wonder I was always tired and had no energy. No wonder my knees and ankles ached. My life has changed immeasurably, and it's only going to get better. I'm even starting to suspect that I , too, have collar bones! 83 pounds gone. 51 to go.

I'm in a contest to be on the cover of Triathlete magazine. To enter I shared my story about how WLS and exercising, specifically triathlons have made me more fit, and I'm happy to say I've made it to phase 1, the top 20! Please vote for me, Julie S., so that I can make it to phase 2. You can vote on all your devices, (desktops, iPads, and your cell phones). Thank you. Voting ends in Monday February 1, 2016. http://triathlon.competitor.com/2016/01/photos/2016-triathlete-fit-contest-round-1-women_127517 Here is the essay I submitted: In August 2011, I had weight-loss surgery. I hoped to lose 100pounds when I had my surgery last November. I've lost right at 50, and I've been in a stall for a few months with no weight loss. Am I just done? Can I still lose? I was told you lost what you're going to lose in the first year. Is that true?

I have been struggling with the mental stuff lately. Really not being able to "see" the weight loss on myself. Everyone says that I I have lost weight and look great but honestly I couldn't see it in myself. Well I took a selfie the other day to show off my super cute new shirt and that is sort of when it hit me, I see the loss. I still have a hard time when I am naked but at least I am getting there

I am 11 months out and I'm down 85 lbs...which I think is great! I have been in a stall for a couple of months but I'm ok with it. I think its giving my skin, which was looking really saggy, a chance to catch up. I look much better now...like my skin fits. It appears that the first 85 came off from the honey-moon phase after surgery and now I will have to work much harder...ok. Let's do this.

I would love to hear from some people who are 5+ years out from surgery and how they have done, good or bad. I realize that there are probably fewer longterm people on this forum just by the nature of it - ie support in the early days. Does anyone know what the statistics are for bypass patients after 5 yrs? I have my first appt in a few weeks, and once I start to tell family and friends I know I'm going to hear all the negatives (I do not plan on telling many early on, even among my closest family/friends) and I'd like to be able to give some positive info back. I am doing this for my health and to be active again, not for vanity (although I sure won't mind looking be…

This is the absolute best thing I have ever done for my health . I had surgery June 23rd at 264 pounds and I now weigh 196 pounds. I have went from 2x shirts to Large , from 40-42 pants to 34's . Surgery went easy - only complication I had was I developed an incisional hernia and had it fixed January 7th. I feel normal I just cannot eat very much . I had failed with my lap band no way I will ever weigh that again.

It seems every day people are commenting on how different I am looking in a positive way. I am getting comments like "You are looking so good!" "Wow, you're getting so skinny!", and my fave "You are doing such a great job. I am proud of you!" Hearing these things really helps keep me motivated! Sometimes it is hard to see the change in ourselves so it really confirms that I made the right choice when someone lets you know. ???? What has someone told you about the new you that makes you feel good?

Holy Moly - I almost never check in here on my laptop - always on mobile and I don't see my ticker there. Today, when I checked in, I realized that I'm already more than halfway to goal!!!!! I really don't know what my goal should be, but picked a weight within normal BMI - so we will see. To put my journey in Scout terms: Roses: -easy surgery and recovery -gone down several sizes -revisiting long outgrown clothes again -gotten off all diabetes meds with great control -will likely be off cholesterol meds once I get my lipid panel done -been able to CROSS MY LEGS!!!!! -handled my diet during a Boy Scout camping weekend like a CHAMP! Thorns: -constipation! …

Starting at 326 lbs. last April, I could only dream of being 199 lbs. again for the last 30 years. It was a dream I never expected to come true. I'm so happy to say that I OFFICIALLY hit my goal this morning and cannot be happier with where this journey has taken me and what all it has taught me. Thanks to God, my family, doctors, friends, and nutritionists!!! Without all of them, this would have never happened or been this enjoyable of a story. Eating right and keeping a positive mind will never allow me to go back to the pain, both physically and mentally that I experienced for most of my adult life. I encourage anyone reading this that is thinking of surgery to t…
