How long did it take for you all to get approval from insurance and what did they ask of you? I'm BCBS Iowa and was just curious if anyone else had them too! I have been on a medically-followed plan for almost a year, so I shouldn't have to do anything more if that is a requirement. What hoops are there to jump through beyond the BMI and health issues category? I already know I qualify for that one! Thanks!

Hi all!! I'm new here and have my surgery set for 12/6/16...I was scheduled to have it last year but decided not to at the last minute. This year though, I'm doing it. My husband and I both smoke and I'm having a really hard time quitting. I still have 3 weeks prior to my absolute MUST QUIT date of 11/8/16. But I want to quit sooner so I'm not waiting down to the last minute and screwing things up for my surgery. Any ideas?? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Hi everyone, I am new to this site. I'm just starting my process, so far I am scheduled to have a sleep study and 24hr PH test to rule out Gred. My plan is to have the sleeve . My doc said if I have to much acid reflux , it will be better for me if I have a gastric bypass surgery. I don't want to have the gastric bypass surgery. I will wait until my PH test results are in before I make a decision. I feel good !! because I was really struggling with the decision to have a weight loss surgery. Now I'm sick and tried of beginning sick and tried. I weigh 256 pounds at this point I don't have anything to lose . Pray for me !!! I…

Alright not actually violent (dramatic definitely but not completely violent) and I'm not even sure if I should be giving it up right now. I'm on my 2 week pre op diet that consists of high Protein low carb. I stopped drinking soda and coffee on Sunday because I thought I had to. But I'm not even completely positive. Is it important to give up caffeine 2 weeks pre op?? I'm drinking a coffee right now because I've had the WORST headache for over a day and idk what to do with myself. I realize it could also be lack of carbs too causing it but I needed some type of relief. Please help :'( Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Hi all. So my surgery is October 6th. I've been on pre op diet for 5 days. All is going well except I was working out last night and I think i gave myself a hernia. I've had one before and had it repaired. But now i am 99% positive one is poking out since I worked out last night. I'm freaking out thinking what if my doctor won't do surgery now? I remember in his lecture I had to sit in he stated that hee would still perform a surgery as long as the hernia wasn't in the way of the stomach. What if it's in the way?!? I will be devastated. Anyone have any experience with hernia and sleeve surgery?! Sent from my LGLS770 using the BariatricPal App

First time poster, hi everyone. 36/M/NZ. Heaviest weight 198KG/436lbs. Always the fat kid/fat guy. Not really sure about the future and how to live life being smaller. Glad to meet you all and read your thoughts and advice. I'm having a sleeve done here in New Zealand. I've just been officially confirmed for the op after losing 26KG to qualify for public funded surgery. Should be done around December. I'm excited and scared. Lots of mixed thoughts going into this... I really want it though, and at no cost it's a really good opportunity, one I know I would regret if I missed out. Must fight the fear. So I have done 4 weeks of high Protein low carbs/sugar diet successfully - no cheating. I am now on my full liquids a d next week will be 7 days of Clear Liquids before my sleeve surgery on October 12th. I'm feeling pretty good and down from 368 to 340. What I can't manage to do is stop my end of night 2 cigarettes per day.. I can usually go weeks without smoking but I am finding that with the hunger crazing the smoking has become a very big addiction.. any suggestions? Sent from my SM-G870W using the BariatricPal App

My husband and I have began our journey to sleeve surgery. Our insurance requires 6 months of weights. Can maintain current weight or lose. But cannot gain. It seems like 6 months will take forever, but I know it won't. My husband is having his first and 6 weeks later I go for mine (doing it this way because of our child and work) I am so tired 26 years old. Had a baby in February and have been at the same weight since the Monday before my son arrived. I am 363 lbs and no medical issues (but my mother is a walking MD nightmare) and I know I am heading down the same path if I don't change. I have to do this for my son and me. Any tips for the 6 month wait? I am trying…

Hi - I had surgery on September 15th, all fine except pain. I went back to work last week and had to come early that first day with strong pain cos I think I hunched over my computer and maybe put pressure on the internal wound. Took better care after that so pain wasn't so bad, but last night and today its awful in the middle of the tummy, under one of the wounds. Plus I sneezed and it was like being stabbed. No other symptoms, no inflammation or fever. Still on thickened fluids. Is this normal? I feel totally unprepared for the level of pain I have had.

Hi! I have surgery date of October 06, 2016. I'm super excited, but my only concern is that my surgeons office have not submitted the paperwork through to my insurance company. Is this normal to schedule the surgery date without submitting to the insurance. I have Aetna and my coworker who has a larger bmi than I told me that her surgeon (different surgeon completely) was not able to get her approved. She was vague and mentioned that Aetna wanted her to wait another year to see how her weight held. I was on a high now I just don't know! Thank you guys for all being super supportive! I don't have a great support system here but you all are so helpful!!! Thoughts? …

I don't like that term but don't really know how else to word it. I sure don't FEEL like a lightweight. I have 60-70 to lose and its 90% in my stomach so I feel like I need to lose much more, meaning I just feel like I'm heavier than I am due to fat location. ANYWAY! Just trying to see how those who didn't have 100 or more to lose have done. TIA!!

I had my gall bladder out laparoscopically in 2009. Left the hospital a few hours later and was at a football game cheering less than 48 hours later. I had four incisions with that surgery. I'm trying to get ready for my pre-op diet as I just got my surgery date for Nov. 2nd and I'm trying to find a decent Protein shake that is affordable. What are your favorites? I tried a sample of the pre-made chocolate Premier Protein and liked that, but can't find it anywhere near me. Any good places to purchase online? Thanks in advance for any help/advice!

Well my medical records were sent to the weight loss clinic. they called me to let me know they got them and said there is bad news. We are missing a record from 2015 so we need that before we can submit to insurance. Well I have to go through the whole process again and get a 2015 record from them but they want me to go through the 4 week wait period for them to even receive it. Is there any other way I can get around it? Can I go to the clinic and get it, I know that they outsource to a company called health port and they take their time with it and I can not wait another month. Thanks for reading in advance (:

Hello! I'm pre-op VSG on Long Island (NY) but due to my work schedule, I won't be able to have the surgery done until December 23...the day before Christmas Eve (guess I won't be eating any holiday goodies THIS year!) The only problem now is that I have waaaay too much time to worry about all the possible complications! Still, I want to stay positive. I have jumped through all the pre-PRE-op hoops (before I could even GET a surgery date), but I am still waiting for my insurance to approve me. Anyone in Western suffolk, south shore? My surgeon is Dr. Atwa of East Setauket. Anyone have him? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using the BariatricPal App

Tomorrow is #3 of 5 monthly required nutrition appointments. I had lost about 7 pounds when I went in last month but am up 5lbs from last month's weigh in as of this week. Part of it is monthly period gain but also poor pre planning on my part when stuck at kids extracurriculars the last 2 weeks. Will this knock me out of the program? I'm really scared about the long term issues with eating, dumping, not being able to drink liquids and eat, the long term issues with not being able to accept certain types of foods in your stomach, the fact I can't use any anti-inflammatories for the rest of my life. This is not something I sought to do, it's something the doctors have highly recommended it, I did 16 months on a liquid diet 3 years ago and lost 130 but gained back 40. My gallbladder went bad in February and caused an acute pancreatic attack which has now rendered me diabetic. I'm excited to get my gallbladder out as I've been suffering from nausea for over a year. But I'm really scared that I'm mak…

I am going so strong because I do it for my daughter... I am very unhealthy and have been fighting and going through hoops and obstacles just to get this surgery. My whole mind and thought process has changed and my daughter is growing up with healthy habits. I would be devastated if I passed because I couldn't change or even get this surgery. I am doing this for my DAUGHTER and also for ME. I have had a lot of negative feedback from so called friends and family but at the end of the day it is my body and my longevity! Who…
