I'm at the beginning of this process. I had my first appointment with the doctor on Friday, and he outlined the pre-op diet he wants me to start immediately. In this clinic, they require people to lose 10% of their overall weight before surgery, and he said he expects it to take about 2 months. I was prepared for a few weeks of a really restrictive diet, but not 2+ months. Anyone else started their journey this way? Here's what he wants me to eat: 2 protein shakes (1/2 scoop, made with 8 oz almond milk) 2 protein bars Dinner of 10 forkfuls of protein, 10 forkfuls of veggies

Are cream of soups, the 98% fat free kind, are these ok to eat while on the pre-op diet? They seem to have a lot of carbs and sodium but I know people use those are their staple. I bought a few yesterday and I had a cream of chicken and it was really good. So now I’m worried that maybe I shouldn’t have them? Please help! This also goes for the sugar free chocolate and vanilla puddings, are these ok?

As the title says, my initial consult is on Monday! I'm finally meeting with a surgeon after tossing the idea of surgery in my head for a year and a half or so (and under the recommendations of my PCP). I know it's just the initial... talk with the surgeon, make sure your actually a good candidate style of stuff, but I'm really excited cause this step makes it more "official" for me. In my excitement, I am afraid I'm going to forget to ask questions, so I am making a list today. Are there any questions you guys would recommend asking during the consultation visit? I have written down to ask about possible additional costs to fix a hiatal hernia (if I have one), or a…

Hey all! I am doing my pre-op tests right now, and all the appointments. I am really really scared that my current ventral hernia is going to make me not be able to have surgery or give complications. Any body else has a hernia that got the surgery and it was fine? Or vice versa. Anything, let me know!

I am from North Dakota and its winter time, and we are obviously in a pandemic but holy cow, this has really changed my social life. I have really realized how much my life revolved around going out to eat, having people over to eat, going out for appetizers and having drinks and so forth. I am excited for spring so we can start with some outside activities but in the mean time I am starting to get cabin fever

Hello everyone! I finally have a surgery date!!! March 29 is the big day!! So I have been assigned a 5 week pre-op liquid diet (starting today!). The diet is 5 x High Protein Boost or High Protein Ensure per day. I am also allowed 1 or 2 cups of clear low sodium broth (Wooo!! Calm down lol). Oh, and I am allowed coffee with sugar substitute. So Canadians often get shafted for flavors or variety for a lot of products...so I am working with $300.00 of High Protein Boosts in Chocolate and Vanilla. I have got a few sugar free syrups (Salted Caramel, Coconut, Peppermint) to change up the taste....hopefully?! Maybe?! I also made some popsicles with Mio flavoring …

Ever since I got my surgery date (March 27th) I am obsessed with watching my 600 lb life. I have watched it off/on over the years but now I just can’t stop watching it. I’m not sure why. Wondering if it’s just me?

Hello! I'm 4 weeks post op and thought I would come back here to share what I have learned over the last 4 weeks. [emoji3590] My experience since surgery has been nothing short of incredible. I'm not speaking in terms of massive weight loss, but my energy, focus, well-being, mental clarity, and state of mind. The weight loss is a bonus. Looking back on my 8 month journey to the OR, I realized that the most crucial piece of advice I received came from the most unlikely of individuals on my path, the psychologist who did my psyche evaluation. She told me that the single best thing I could do for my recovery in the time before my surgery was to practice hitting my progra…

I have FEP BCBS Standard. I thought I had the basic option but I do for sure have the standard. I was looking to see how much it cost someone just for the hospital stay and surgery with this insurance? It’s kind of confusing to me.

Hi all! Just needed a little encouragement. I just got denied (first time) for my VGS because I gained eight pounds during my three-month supervised weight loss. The reason I gained weight is that I was a "lightweight" at 205/5'2 and my nutritionist told me not to lose too much weight or I might be denied. Eight pounds isn't a big deal, I know, and they said I just need to come in and weigh when I have lost that. So now I think I'm going to try to practice the liquid liver-shrinking diet I'll need to do pre-surgery to drop those pounds. It's day one and only breakfast and I am starving, lol. Any tips or tricks to get yourself through the liquid diet?…

I am having bypass surgery March 3rd through insurance approval and when my coordinator called to schedule my consents. She said I didn’t have to pay a deposit to my surgeon because my deductible was met. When the scheduler called to schedule my appointment and pre op paperwork appoint for 2 days before surgery she did not mention I would have to pay anything. I just don’t want to get to the hospital and they want 4,000.

Hi everyone! I am new here and wanted to see if anyone is having surgery on or near Feb 2?! I am having the gastric sleeve done. Since Covid is still causing hospitals to be overflowing they are doing my surgery as a day surgery. Has anyone had this done as a day surgery? I'm nervous and excited and still in shock that it's happening! I am a little concerned with it being a day surgery but I'm sure they know what they're doing. Any tips or tricks would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hi all, I'm scheduled for sleeve on 11/18. I'm 5'6" and now 213lbs before my pre op diet in the next 2 weeks. I was 231 starting in May. If I loose 10 lbs on pre op liquid diet I'll be 203. I figure 50 more lbs may be doable on my own. Is this just nerves or is it not enuf lbs to have surgery! Help

Hi everyone I’ve officially started the process . I had my first consultation with the doctor and I am excited to start the journey. I also have a lot of questions and concerns. I was told this site was the best place to meet people who have gone through the surgery and could provide a lot of insight . Hopefully someone can answer a few questions. What was the pain like those first few days or weeks after surgery? How quick was your recovery time ? Is there anything I should know that you wish someone told you ? What has your post diet been like ? Sorry for all the questions but I just wanna get as much information as I can.

Hey everyone, I'm new to this whole process. I just had my consultation at the beginning of the month and have started my three month process for insurance. I have been overweight for quite some time now and I'm just ready to start my weight loss journey. What are something that you wish was told to you before you had your surgery? Did you already start taking vitamins? Was anyone on birth control before and after surgery? I've heard a lot of different things about pain also after surgery and I expect pain, but was you able to do some of your normal daily routine? Was bending, sitting or laying hard for you to do? I've had two C-sections so I'm familiar with abdomin…

Does anyone here have the experience of trying a weight loss medication during your pre-op countdown? I'm seeing a dietitian, doing all of the steps required by insurance, and I am taking Bupropion for these 4-6 months because my baseline weight refuses to move. It is finally moving, my weight is finally changing little by little but I'm worried that there can be a regain when I stop taking this medication? I'm planning on stopping it before the procedure. I'd appreciate any insight or experiences you may have had.

Hello! Im in the “considering” phase for WLS. Not sure if I am a good candidate or if I am giving up on my own sheer determination too soon. I have a child who is about a year out of sleeve surgery at age 22 and doing great. It’s inspiring, and I long for similar success. I have battled my weight my whole life. A little background: According to height and weight charts, I have never ever been within healthy range. At age 14, I weighed 181. As an active teen I averaged 165, and I have not seen that weight since. As an adult, I usually hovered between 195-270 and everything in between as I had children and went through the decades of my life. …

Hi Everyone, I am eligible for a gastric bypass surgery (Diabetic with BMI> 35%). I struggled my whole life with yo yo dieting and my doctor has asked me to consider the surgery.. I am really excited but my lovely wife is not very supportive. I read about the weight regain and I shared my findings with her. Here's how the conversation went: Me: "After the first 12 months (honeymoon period), the weight loss will stop and eventually I need to purely rely on the lifestyle changes to maintain the weight. I need to eat healthy (no junk food), exercise, drink my 2L water, sleep early ... otherwise, I might regain all the weight back!" Her answer was: " so…

Hi all! I’m a 19 yr old young woman in the process of getting a VSG. WEIGHT: 358 lb HEIGHT: 5’5 BMI: 59 I’m kind of doing this alone so I desperately need advice and answers from anyone who can help. I’m on month 3/6. So far, I’ve met with my doctor, I’ve had labs done, and now my next steps are to meet with the surgeon, dietician, and have my psych evaluation. I need to know when should I contact my insurance (sorry if that’s a dumb question). I’m on my mother’s plan, and we have BCBS (IL) Anthem w/ PPO Suitcase. Is the gastric sleeve covered with them? When will I find out if it’s covered or not? Thank you for your help!

I have had 2 strokes, my last one being almost 5 years ago. The surgeon who I'm wanting to do my gastric sleeve is wanting clearance from my neurologist. No biggie. I'm just curious who else has a history of stroke who's had the gastric sleeve done. Were there concerns? How was recovery?

I'm almost done with my two-week pre-op liquid diet, but I'm having trouble with nausea. It comes and goes in waves, isn't constant, and doesn't seem to be related to any specific product. I mentioned it to my team and they suggested trying a plant-based protein. I've tried Vega before and HATED it, so I'm not keen on this. Anyone else have this and figure out the issue? Nerves? Sheer volume of protein? Hunger presenting as nausea?

Hi everyone my surgery got delayed again for another 8 days. Yesterday I had felt really weird and it scared me, I think my blood pressure was way to low so I ate a half of a boiled egg and had a piece of candy. I’m on a liquid diet to shrink my liver and I lost 14 pounds already. Hope this isn’t tmi but I haven’t been able to use the bathroom so I was wondering would the egg and candy still be in my stomach days later.

Hi everyone! In exactly one month I will begin my pre-op liquid diet. I am allowed Jell-o, popsicles, broth, protein drinks, milk, vegetable juice, fruit juice, etc. I am worried about going on this diet and sticking with it for 2 weeks. I thought about easing into the diet, like having just a protein drink for breakfast the next 2 weeks. Then the following 2 weeks I am thinking about doing liquids for breakfast and lunch and eating supper as usual. I think this might be a way to help me ease into it and curb cravings. What were your experiences with the pre-op diet? How did you stick to it for the full 2 weeks?

Any advice of any kind is appreciated.
