PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. Started by vikingbeast,

I just wanted to say thank you to all y'all. I found this site a while ago and have been lurking and reading and learning. The honest talk helped me with a lot of the anxiety I was having about surgery. The photos inspired me so much—so many of you changed your lives and kept them changed. The folks who are really into exercise reassured me that it isn't over (I love my CrossFit, and I can't wait until my weight isn't the limiting factor). And just the fact that so many people's lives improved finally got me over the "shame hump". I called for a referral, had my initial consultation last week, and am tentatively scheduled for VSG in late August. (M…

Hi everyone! I’m am on day 6 of my pre-op diet and I have lost 10.5lbs. My daily “meals” are 2 premier protein shakes, 3oz of chicken or fish, 1 cup steamed veggies or 2 cups of raw veggies, 64 oz of water and 1 cup chick or beef broth. It seems like an excessive amount of weight I have lost in a matter of 6 days. Is this normal? My pre-op diet weight was 264.5lbs and today I weigh exactly 254.0lbs. Just worried I’m losing too much weight too quickly. I still have 8 days to go until surgery. Any one have similar weight loss on pre-op? Thank you in advance :)

Is anyone in Souther Cali Going through Kaiser Permanente and waiting for a surgery date? I finished my classes in March 2021 and finished my pre-op labs in early May. I wrote to Kaiser earlier this month and they said my file was sent over to the Bariatric doctor for a surgery referral. I am just curious if anyone is in the same boat as me and what their timeline is?

So surgery is tomorrow!!! I should be really happy and excited but all I can think about is eating a REAL lunch (since I have to go clear liquids after 4). I've been on basically a liquid diet for the past 2 weeks (not to say that I have followed that 100%...it's harder than I thought). My husband and my support system is trying to talk me out of my real lunch today (as he probably should) but I find myself getting mad at him!!! Anyone else feel this way before surgery?!?

  11. Started by LizzLosingIt,

My surgery is scheduled for July 9th, so officially three weeks from today. my doctor needs me to do a two-week pre-op diet, consisting of two protein shakes a day, one light meal, and several light snacks like sugar free jello and crudités with lite ranch. Decided to ease into it a week earlier so that I’m more successful during the real portion. struggling to come up with meals that don’t consist entirely of pasta and rice! It’s what we eat a lot of in my culture. Entire meals could be a bowl of rice. here’s a dish I made today of ground chicken, avocado ranch, salsa and light cheese on a romaine boat. I’m still hungry but am hoping that with time, I won’t feel…

  12. Hello, My first appointment with the surgeon is Thursday. I'm nervous and excited and generally not looking forward to the hour and 20 minute drive there. I am wondering what I should expect? I've met with the nutritionist. I've done my required three appointments monitoring my diet/habits. I have no idea if I should expect more surgeon appointments, or what comes next? I know I need testing done, but I don't know if that happens before or after you have a date set. What should I expect from the surgeon? Thank you!

  14. Started by ShrinkingSydney,

I was just recently diagnosed with an irritated stomach lining and a small ulcer. I was supposed to be getting my clearances for surgery next Thursday with only one appointment left and about a month left until my surgery date was scheduled. I was getting so excited but now I am really worried. Has this happened to anyone else? How far back is this going to set me? I am also wavering on which type of surgery to get. I was pretty set on the sleeve because I have GERD ( but I also have a decent-sized hiatal hernia, so that could also be the cause). But I am now leaning toward the bypass for various reasons. My hesitation with the bypass is that I take medication for b…

  16. Started by E-mom,

I am a great yo yo dieter. So at 66 yrs old, I've finally come to the conclusion that if I want to keep my weight off I need a new approach. WLS fits the bill on that. I've scoured the internet and feel fairly informed. My doc agreed that WLS would be a good option for me. I have Kaiser insurance but I may not quite meet their qualifications. So my question is - Is there a bariatric surg. program in the Portland, Or area that will take a marginally non qualifying person? I won't have insurance so cost will be a consideration. Thank you for any info you can give me.

Good evening everyone I’m new to the group. Im from NC and I’m having the gastric sleeve procedure 8/6/21. I’ve been in this process since 2017 and hit an obstacle when I found out I had sarcoidosis in 2018. That ultimately lead to me being on prednisone for about 2 years….and I gained a lot of weight which put my journey on hold. I found a new surgeon who actually listened to me and assessed my situation he agreed to do a stage procedure (gastric then bypass). I’m so ready for this I’ve been praying about it for years and in and out of depression behind weight and just life in general. I’m 32 years old no kids. I’m ready to live my life and not let my weight determine my…

  18. I was simply told that I will be meeting with a Nutritionist 1 day. Idk what that meeting will entail. What did the Nutritionist tell you to do? : To keep a daily journal for months ? Is it a once a month meeting or once a week meeting? Do they just go over a healthy diet and that’s it ?

  21. Started by lizonaplane,

I called the surgery center at the beginning of January and met with the surgeon in early February. I finished the four monthly stupid insurance required nutrition classes ("did you know french fries are unhealthy???") a few weeks ago and I still don't have a date for my surgery. All elective surgeries were on hold until April due to COVID so everyone whose surgery was cancelled or delayed has to be scheduled first. I had lost 39 lbs but then I got scared that my BMI would go too low if my surgery was going to be not for a few more months so when I visited my family I threw a few food funerals and gained 3 lbs and now I'm so angry at myself. I'm back on track now, b…

I have surgery tomorrow morning (06/23). i started my preop diet of the protein shakes yesterday and i've been feeling some mild acid reflux and am unsure if it's actually normal or if I might just be getting reflux from all my nerves- i haven't even had a full nights sleep for a week now due to my anxiety of the procedure - anyone else experience something like this before surgery and it turn out ok? I'm really scared to go in tomorrow ?

  29. I'm trying not to get too frustrated about this. My surgery was scheduled for May, then June, and now JULY. All good reason(s) for reschedule though. I have some chest congestion that has hung around and turned into a bit of pneumonia. It was pushed out, and then my regular doctor said to push it out a little further so I can see a specialist in the meantime. I'm dissapointed but feel very comfortable with the reasoning for it. I don't want to go into surgery with weakened lungs. But I feel my resolve busted a little bit, and maybe a bit of relief. It's 100% the right choice, medically speaking. I was half-way into my liquid diet when I got the news, and now i'm…

Hi all, I'm about a month and a half from my bypass surgery and I'm struggling to be good on my food. My partner is an alcoholic and decided to go off his mental health meds a couple weeks ago without consulting his therapist or me. I've managed to get him to start them again a couple days ago, but it's been rough. Additionally, my special needs 6 year old has been home from his special needs "school"/ therapy center over insurance issues that won't resolve until at least the 30th. His being out of school coincided with my partner starting a new job, so suddenly he's not home with us and my son has been acting out a bit. To top it all off, my chronic pain has been fl…

  36. My husband just took a new job with better insurance that finally covers bariatric surgery. We decided on the best plan because I knew I wanted to get the surgery. Now I’m seeing that there is a 6 month medically supervised diet required before surgery and keep reading that a surgeon won’t even speak to you until that’s done, which means I couldn’t get the surgery this year. I need to get the surgery done this year as we can’t afford to pay for the best insurance plan again next year snd without the best insurance plan, the out of pocket maximum is much much higher. My pcp had me on Phenteramine last year, for about 8 months. Any chance this would count as a medically s…

Hello - I’m scheduled for a gastric sleeve at Blossom Bariatrics later in June. I have done a lot of research and they have a lot of educational materials/videos that they have provided. However, I know I do not know everything, and am trying to prepare. What questions did you ask your surgeon pre-op? I’m making a list and would love to know what you found helpful to ask. Thanks!

My surgery is coming up in a couple months. I am a little nervous about the 2 week pre-op diet. I know this question is going to be weird and it is really just a hypothetical question... I was told by the dietician if I don't adhere strictly to the diet 100%, then it could be canceled on me. To my understanding, the diet has a few functions but one is to mainly get rid of the fat around the organs like the liver. But I'm worried I might mess up one day because of how hungry I will most likely get. What if I did mess up one day and eat something not on the diet? Would the surgeon somehow be able to tell? What can I do to keep myself satiated besides drink water all da…

Hello everyone. So I had gastric bypass 6 weeks ago today and I am still miserable! I get sick every time I eat. I can’t keep my vitamins down. I have tried two different vitamins and both have made me sick. I do take omperazole everyday. I’m not sure what to do now, or if this is normal to still feel so bad after 6 weeks. At this point I’m regretting getting this done. If someone has some suggestions please let me know. Thanks!

  40. Hey all, question for al of you, whether pre-op or post-op: what were some surprising things you discovered during the bariatric surgery process, whether about yourself, insurance, people around you, diets in general, unexpected occurrences etc? What should someone in pre-op be ready for?

Hi everyone ! Happy Memorial Day! So my friends and family are throwing a cookout of course. I’ve already prepared myself on how to control and not over indulge on food/ drinks however there will also be ******. Prior to my first consultation, I loved occasionally smoking ******. To my knowledge , there isn’t any nicotine in it but of course it is tobacco. Does anyone know if it’s okay for me to smoke that today? I’m sure I won’t be able to do it after because the hose is pretty much a straw so it would be nice to get one last hoo-rahhhh in before my life changes . Just don’t want it to affect my surgery. Thanks!

Hello, I wanted to know as much as I could about gastric bypass surgery and gastric sleeve surgery that I think I've scared myself right out of surgery. I've read three books and watched everything I could on the subject on YouTube. I also have PMR therefore I'm not sure if I can even have this surgery. I am 5'5 and weigh 226 pounds. I was 120 pounds when I was started on bipolar meds. I've been very thin all my life so I'm am very upset about all this weight that I'm carrying on a small frame. I have a question about food. I'm not big on food but I do love sugar some of this sugar addiction is caused by the meds. and some is just a natural craving. Wh…

  46. I have FEP Blue BCBS. I have attached a screenshot from their 2021 booklet. Although it does say three months in a medically supervised weight loss program, there is nothing regarding how much needs to be lost (if any) or if a net gain would be ok. Here’s my issue. I started this journey at 257. My first weigh in was 269. I am 260 right now but I am having a colonoscopy just a day before my next weigh in a week. With all those laxatives and extended clear Liquid diet (2 days for me) , I am probably bound to be down even more. This will look like a 12 lb gain and 12 lb or more loss in two months. Ugh. I don’t want to look all Over the place. Each month I gain …

  47. Started by MokeyHanna,

I quit vaping 14 days ago. I’m taking my blood test today. Let’s pray!!!

  48. I started this journey at the end of January with a BMI of 49.6 and now my BMI is 44 (lost more than 35lbs so far). If I lose 19 more lbs I won't qualify for surgery anymore, and my surgery won't be for 2 more months at least. I'm losing about 9lbs a month, so it is entirely possible that I could have a BMI under 40 in 2 months! I don't have any other health conditions that would qualify me for surgery at a lower BMI, so I don't know what to do. I don't want to go back to the way I was eating before, and I know that I am always either gaining or losing weight. I'm eating lower carb and higher protein, so I'm just not really hungry. I never thought I'd have this problem!
