PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. Started by FarfelDiego,

I just saw the results of my pre-op bloodwork from the lab and I’m nervous that the doctor will say no surgery date for you. My triglycerides were in the high range, blood glucose was 161, a1c was 8.0, and there were a few other things in the red as well. Has anyone experienced this? I don’t have my sidebar filled out as I’m on the mobile app. The pre-op bloodwork is the last step, they tell me, before getting a surgery date.

  2. My biggest problem is feeling hungry. I enjoy food and drink and as such think about them alot. I would very much like to be one of 'those people' who don't think about food too much and sometimes forget to eat. Will a sleeve gastrectomy affect my appetite and destroy Ghrelin enough to help me with this?

  3. Started by lroever,

So I am in the beginning stages of this journey and I am anxious and excited. I have to get a sleep study, an EKG, an Endoscopic procedure, and psych eval done. It is all a little over whelming. Im focusing on making some of the changes now that I will face after surgery. How did everyone cope with the waiting?

Hey y’all! I would love to connect with my fellow low(er) bmi people! It can be harder for us to get approved for surgery and get support from our loved ones. Bmi 30-39.9. Are you self-pay, insurance-paid, Mexico or the U.S., what’s your pre-op bmi? Where are you located? We’re your family and friends supportive? What made you choose surgery? I’ll start…. bmi of 30.6 self-pay Surgery in Tijuana, Mx in April (hello….hot surfer dudes!) I live in a bubble on the gulf coast family freaked out at first, but overall supportive. I chose surgery (gastric bypass) as this was recommended to reduce or eliminate my 15-year history with GERD. Also …

Soo, I’m pre op and today is my husband’s birthday, so I’m doing the last supper thing and sitting down at a fancy place for a lovely lunch (venison salad so not too bad…until the tiramisu…but anyway) we were chatting about the journalism course that I have applied to start in July….there are so many options out there for writers….and I suddenly had a brilliant thought “ wow…I could be a food critic”….husband looked at me sideways “if there’s one thing that you won’t be able to do…” “oh, yes. Dam” Anyone else got any funny stories to make us all smile?

  6. Hey everyone. I'm new here and so excited to be here. My surgery is tomorrow March 14th, we are leaving to stay the night in town at a hotel tonight. I've been super nervous and all those last minute jitters. My main question is I woke up today alittle chest congested, they say don't come if your sick. I've been waiting sooooo long for this, so do I go and let the dr decide? or do I call and ask if I should reschedule in the morning? Which I DONT WANT TO DO. Please I need advice.

  7. Started by tristynftw,

I am on day 4 of my pre-op diet for VSG scheduled 3/24. For the first two days I was STARVING and snacked all day on cucumbers and bell peppers in addition to the diet plan. My diet plan consists of one protein shake for breakfast, one for lunch, and then 5 oz lean protein and unlimited non starchy vegetables for dinner. Staring yesterday and today as well I have been experiencing zero appetite. This morning I had to make myself drink the protein shake where two days ago I was savoring every sip. I am not craving any foods, not even carbs, and have little desire to eat. Is this normal? Does anyone know what is going on with me?

  8. Started by JamieJo,

I had my surgery (sleeve) on 2/14 and recovery is going relatively smoothly. I’ve been following the dietitians guidelines and starting to walk 30 minutes a day. Over the last few days the scale has been going UP not DOWN ?. Has anyone experienced this? My thought is that I didn’t get enough protein in the first week following surgery and my body is balancing that out. Thoughts?

  9. Started by mi75,

Just checking in to see who is around...been about a month since I stopped by but I've spent the last several weeks getting a lot of 'stuff' done in my life so online presence has been minimal! Hope everyone is good, I just ordered some new proteins to try and help me get to the finish line that I'm still struggling to reach.

Hey, so I am in the early process of the getting the sleeve done. I have two more "supervised weight loss" appointments and my anxiety is through the roof. As a requirement for my insurance, I cannot gain any weight. I go next week for my weigh in and obsessing over it. I was down 8 pounds, and now I am down 5 pounds, but I still have six days to go. And then I cannot gain any weight from the previous weigh in. Anyone else feel stressed about this requirement? The whole point of the surgery is because we cannot lose weight easily or even maintain the weight. Any advice?

  11. Been waiting since middle of December to get the stupid psychiatric evaluation done. Today was their first available appointment for testing since December. They said it would take 3-4 hours to complete, I got done in 1 hour. It was roughly 650 questions on one test and 200 questions on another. hopefully everything comes back normal and i can get scheduled. I had a 1 hour "interview" with the psychologist on Tuesday and she said as long as the testing comes up good then i can get scheduled

  12. Started by liveaboard15,

So Yesterday i had my Psyc Eval and after i went to another floor to get my EKG done which is required as part of my pre op stuff. it was very quick, Took longer to put on all the leads than the actual EKG lol. So the report got posted on my online medical record and seems that there are issues... Anyone know anything about EKG's. I dont have another appointment with the surgeon for a little while but obviously it will come up during that time...

Hello This is my first post. I hope I put it in the right forum for "April Surgeries". It's nice to meet everyone. I have been on this journey since April of last year. Im excited, anxious, all the feelings. I am still trying to cut back and make life style changes. I am also trying to go ahead and cut to one smoothie a day. But my smoothies are yummy, the sample smoothie the Drs office gave me. Does is matter what brand? I tried a sample: Bariatric Fusion:Meal Replacement orange cream...IT was ok but a terrible after taste. I have seen people saying they tried Premiere or other drinks, are these allowed? I also see people saying broths, when did y…

Ok, I swear I read somewhere last week that in November of 2021, UMR cut required dietician visits down to 12 weeks. I need my UMR people to help me out here. LOL I went to Beltline Bariatrics last week and am waiting on my referral to a dietician. This will be my 4th attempt to get approved for WLS.

  15. So I’ve been in preop phase for 8 months in prep for bypass. Long story short I switched doctors after 6 months with old doc. I love the new doctor and almost ready for surgery, just took some time to get all records from old dr. Now my husband is on board and he’s seeing new doctor to go through WLS as well. We went to our first support group meeting last night and now I’m very confused and I think he is too. We now have this mindset that “we can do this”. He hasn’t been one to read or research much as I do, and he was amazed at all the lifestyle changes and tools you use to rewire your head and to be successful. He says well if we can learn that now I think we can total…

Hi all! I am inquiring within. I was pre-approved July 2021. I went through all of my required appointments. I was never truly provided a set caloric intake, carb goal, protein goal, etc. Today was my “pre op” appointment, I received my pre operative documentation as well as back dated prescriptions for post op from January 28th, 2022. Upon completion of this appointment, my insurance called and said they’re waiting for my file. Then after further research, another authorization was submitted for a consult. I had a slight gain, nothing major where it would completely offset me. Yet, I was scheduled with the bariatric coordinator for next Wedn…

Hey guys, Just some details: I've only just met with the surgeon a couple weeks ago and am still completing my appointments and tests. I am female and currently weigh 375lbs and am 5'5. My surgeon said I would have great success with either sleeve or bypass with the bypass yielding most weightloss. I am still very unsure as to which one I want, but am leaning more towards the sleeve since the surgery doesn't seem as intense as bypass. I am nervous, however that I won't have significant weightloss with the sleeve since I am starting at such a high weight. I totally understand I will need to put in work for either one and everybody's body is different. Am I over c…

  22. My primary doctor tells me constantly that I shouldn't have the operation because of all the bad side effects it can give me long term. I can do the operation privately without a referral but I am still concerned because of his opinion. I suffer from a lot of pain due to GERD and taking Omeprazole for it. But I am sick of it and it doesn't help me 100%. I am sick of nights with so much pain that I can't sleep.

Hi all, I am new here, 41F, from Edmonton, Alberta Canada. Having gastric sleeve in the next 3 months, just waiting on a phone call to make a date with the surgeon! Has anyone here had a sleeve done with liver disease? I have well-compensated cirrhosis, and my consult with the surgeon was this morning. He said I am not a candidate for RNY due to the liver issues, but I am a candidate for a sleeve gastrectomy, and he wants to do it sooner than later as he feels it will slow and possibly reverse some of my liver damage. He said that the benefits of surgery far outweigh the risks, although I'll have to be hospitalized for a minimum 3 days. I am feeling ra…

  24. Hello All, I'm anxious and pretty excited about my upcoming surgery! ?Counting down the days...Just 9 days left! I can't believe it's almost here! When I went in for my final dietician appointment today she told me that my BMI was in close range that I may have been able to forego the 5 day liquid diet but it didn't happen. I still have to do it. No worries...I am prepared for it. For those that have gone before me...Any tips or suggestions to make it easier or more tolerable? I assume preparation is the key! Any tips and for day of or post op surgery pain relief? Praying that everyone has great success with their surgery and weight loss!❤️

Still in the pre-op phase here. Just wondering what everyone else is doing for diet? I had lost 10% of my weight at the 6 month preop time. Now I’ve gained back 5-7 pounds and can’t get past it. Up and down and back and forth. Wondering what you all are following as far as calories, macros, etc that seems to be working. Not sure if my body just freaked out at the 10% mark but I’m really struggling and I’d like to lose as much as possible before surgery if I can. I’m exercising doing CrossFit or walking/yoga 5-6 days a week. Any advice?

I’ve completed all requirements. Now I’m just waiting on a surgery date. How long will this step take?

  31. I am heavily researching getting gastric sleeve surgery, and this forum has been really helpful. I am curious for those who have had the surgery, or any WLS really; what is something that you found out after surgery that you wish you knew about beforehand. Both good and bad appreciated!

  32. Started by suzannethemom,

Yesterday I met with the dietitian. I don’t have a surgery date yet, but she is having me start a 1,300 calorie diet with 45% carbs, 30% protein and 25% fat. No refined carbs. I was writing down healthy snack ideas like Greek yogurt with granola (my favorite). Then I saw that granola is not allowed because it is a refined carb. I started crying! I think I was crying more about the idea of a diet than the actual granola. It’s been an emotional week for me as I launch forward on my WLS journey. All my tests are done. Two appointments left (follow up with psychologist and dietician). It finally feels like this is really happening.

  33. Hi, Has anyone ever experienced the Nutritionist and PA are in agreement on food/shakes, and the Psych Therapist disagreed with them regarding food/shakes. I am at the beginning stages of my journey, about 3 months in. I have lost a total 15 lbs. I go swimming ever night. I explained to the nutritionist and PA that I am super hungry after swimming. They have to eat small protein before swimming, then eat my dinner as planned, If that doesn’t work add in a shake or more protein. The drs office wants 3 meals a day but they are okay with protein snacks or non carb veggies/fruit snack The Psych therapist was completely against this and was very adamant about just …

  34. I was sleeved on 1/28/2022, everything went good gas pain and pain right after but no other problems. I get home and feel like I have post pardom after having my kids. My heart raced, anxiety, didn't want my husband to go to work, and cried constantly. I ended up calling my therapist and getting something temporarily to get me through. I do feel better now buy still have those impending gloom and doom feelings. All, of what the what if I get a blood clots, what if this, what if that. Just curious if anyone else has dealt with this? Hello, my name is Mme C. I am new to this forum, so please be kind. I am not aware if this has been discussed before. That being said... At my pre- surgery Doctor assessment visit my Dr told me that the best he could predict in terms of weight loss would be 60 lbs. That doesn't even come close to what I would like to attain overall. I need to lose more than that to what I feel would make it worth my while. What do you all think? I have spinal and joint issues, as well as hip and shoulder bursitis. I realize those things may never go away, My hope is I only want to relieve some of my present suffering through MWL surgery. Thanks for listening.

  36. Started by suzannethemom,

I met with the psychologist for the first time on Friday. The very first thing he asked me was “what is your comfortable goal weight.” My current weight is 223, BMI of 38. A perfect BMI is 20 with a weight of 120 lbs (which was my weight before I had kids). I told him my comfortable goal weight is 140 lbs. He said that is too low and I should set my goal to a reasonable weight of 155 lbs. It kinda bugged me afterwards because he is a therapist, not a surgeon or dietitian. When I met with the surgeon on Monday, he didn’t mention a goal weight, but I figured HE would decide on my goal weight when I have the pre-surgery visit (no surgery date yet). Who decided on you…

  37. So here I am, 6 months in, lost 10% of my weight and going to my final preop appointment. On the edge of my seat because after all this time I finally get to meet and discuss with my surgeon. Hubby asks me on the way in “what happens if you still don’t see her”.? I tell him well then I’m done with this place. Guess what??? Still didn’t see her!!!!I weighed in, met with the NP, signed paperwork and went over some surgery stuff, met with dietician, got vitamin samples the whole thing. After 3 1/2 hours I still hadn’t see her and had to leave to be back for work. Now what? What do I do? Give up on this office? Start somewhere else? Or thrown in the bypass towel altogether …

  38. Hello everyone. I have had a lap band for about 15 years or so and it hasn't been filled in years because of all of the problems I was having. I have recently decided to have a gastric bypass. Saw the surgeon for an initial consult, but he refuses to remove the band and do the bypass in one surgery. He says I have to first have the band removed, then wait however long and then have the bypass. The reason, he says, is that there is a higher risk of complications if the lap band is removed at the time of the bypass. Is he right? I'm wondering if I should get a second opinion. However, I'm self pay for bypass so I don't want to pay for a surgery that could be aborted du…

Hello, I just had my first appointment a couple days ago (went well!). I now have to get a blood panel, EKG, Chest Xray and Sleep study done. Aside from blood work, I've just never had any of these done. Is this a standard part of the process? Anything I should be worried about. Thank you!

  40. Started by Toomany#s,

Has anyone else had trouble getting past the patient coordinator at the doctor’s office? No matter what records I have sent, she never seems to receive them even though the doctors are all on the same charting system so it’s always available. It’s been five months since my original appointment with the surgeon. The coordinator is never available by phone. I really don’t want to start over with a new office since everything they asked me to do is done, but she just doesn’t seem to want to acknowledge it. It’s frustrating.

Hello! New here and going through my pre-op phase. I’ve had 2 appts thus far and they are the monthly requirements from my insurance. If all goes accordingly I will have my surgery date by May 2022. I’ve researched my options and the PA I spoke with at my last appt suggested either VSG or the Loop DS. She stated it’s entirely my choice and of course the approval from insurance, but I’m having such a hard time deciding. I’ve made a list , pros and cons, and while the Loop DS is more what I’m leaning towards, the effects are what worry me the most. I’m take meds daily and hold my self accountable for them so I don’t worry to much about being on top of vitamin intake…

I eat less than 1000 calories a day - sometimes as low as 600. If I ate a lot I would just Bypass or Sleeve and shut up. But I have never been a big eater. But I have been gaining weight at an alarming rate since I herniated a disc 6 months ago and have put on 35 pounds... UGH. I had lost that a year ago before I hurt my back. I am new to the group (first post). I have my very first appointment in a few days and I am SO NERVOUS! I have done tons of research and decided that RNY is the best option for me due to my severe GERD. I have a BMI of 37.8 and two co-morbidities. I have made notes of all my health issues and reasons why I want the surgery. I’ve been rehearsing the question “why do you want the surgery” with my husband and my answer is a rambling mess. I get so nervous and talk too much and try to sound educated. Good grief, I could use some solid advice. This first appointment is SO important to me. I don’t want to mess it up and not get a second appointment with the dietitian. …

I had a sleeve 7 years ago and am revising to bypass with a surgery date of March 1st. The process after approval for my sleeve was bittersweet. I was working with an elderly man who died suddenly, we were very good friends. He died just a few hours before my final pre-op appointment. My surgeon's final appointments are LONG (2 hours, one with the nurse and one with the surgeon) and as much as I tried to be happy, I just couldn't because I was so sad. This followed me to surgery day too. Here I am, surgery day #2 coming up on March 1st (68 days away!!!). I'm trying my best to enjoy this pre-op period. As a team, they decided I don't have to do the 10 day pre-op…
