PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. Started by oyveyy1,

Hi all, I was originally going to go through with VSG as a self-pay but my guilty conscience is weighing on me for not at least attempting to have my insurance approve it. I have Blue Cross and a BMI of 37. Besides being overweight, I’m relatively healthy. I do not have any of the comorbidities that my plan lists. Does anyone have any experience with seeking approval with a similar situation? Looking for advice on how to be approved or a more complete list of comorbidities. Thank you!

  2. Hi! ? I'm on a 2 week pre-op diet of all liquids. ? ? One of the yummiest things I'm allowed to eat is sugar-free pudding. I've bought the Snack Pack sugar free pudding in flavors chocolate and vanilla and they taste great. However, I recently bought the pudding mix to make at home (and make in bigger amounts since clearly I'm hungry). I mixed the pudding mix with almond milk (saw online that recipes recommend you use less almond milk compared to traditional milk), since on my diet I'm allowed to have unsweeted almond milk, coconut milk, soy milk but not regular milk. Bad news -- the pudding I made doesn't taste as yummy as the pre-packed Snack Pack pudding. A…

I’m day 4 of my pre-op and I have to admit I haven’t been perfect on it, however, today I ordered grilled nuggets and the restaurant gave me a free brownie. So as I’m driving I’m like I’m not going to eat it. That turn into just a little bite. I didn’t eat it all but I feel horrible for eating it. I’m starting to think I’m not going to be able to resist and it’s going to mess up my sleeve. Any tips on how to fight the cravings. I’m not perfect but I’m trying??‍♀️??‍♀️??‍♀️

Well I screwed up my PreOp diet today. I was on the two weeks high protein low calorie diet (I’m in week 2) 3 protein shakes a day , one small meal kn the evening (300 cal or less) and a couple things of dairy and fruit during the day …. well that’s was going fine until I went to my office for the first time in months today .. got roped into a team lunch and totally went off the rails … Do I tell my surgeon or just get back after it tomorrow and keep it clean till my surgery next Tuesday?

I am having a very slow weight loss. I had my first surgery 3/2000 and VBG revised in 2017. I gained 80 pounds and had a gastric bypass on 3/23/2022. Wondering if anyone else had these issues?

Getting nervous 4 days til surgery so ready to get into the gym

  7. Hi all! I had my surgery on Monday 4th April in Manchester, UK. The first 2 days were awful (lots of pain, nausea and vomiting) The 3rd and 4th days were better (threw up for the last time, had some lovely hot showers, pain manageable) The 5th and 6th days have been amazing! (out to cafes and shops, no nausea or pain, even drove for an hour) I am experiencing a brilliant recovery, I think. BUT... I'm worried - only that I can take in much more liquid than I expected. I have just eaten a whole can of strained roast chicken soup with no problem at all. It's far more than the few tablespoons that I hear about other people struggling to get…

  8. Started by Slim Brotha H,

One week down and 6 days to go! Prior to this, I thought it was going to be much more difficult. I have been counteracting my cravings for pizza, hot wings and Indian food, with researching ideas to make the meals I crave more "bariatric sleeve friendly". I am working out recipes and ingredients, waiting for the day I can eat whole food again. I have been able to still cook meal for my kids and I find myself making healthier choices in what I serve them. I told my wife "How can we both be eating healthier and still feed the kids chicken nuggets and fries". She agreed. This transformation will not only benefit me, but the whole family! The most difficultly I am experiencin…

OMG. My surgery day is tomorrow and I am suppose to be on a liquid diet. I’m studying while my toddler is here eating grapes and he fed me a few grapes and I …..like a dummie , mindlessly ate them!!!!! I wasn’t thinking. I was so into my book. I feel like I ate about 2 or 3 but I don’t even know for sure. You think my surgeon would notice ? It’s a Sunday so I can’t even call to ask . :(

Hello everyone! I am new here and just wanted to say hello. I decided I wanted to get bariatric surgery done last year but I wanted to wait till January to start, that way everything went to my deductible for my insurance. My husband I am are both going to get the bypass done. I first saw the doctor January 24th and my husband saw her Feb 4th. We both have different insurances, my insurance only required one nutritionist appointment and the psych evaluation. My husband has to have 2 nutritionist appointments and the psych evaluation. I am completely done with everything and he has one more nutritionist appointment. We would like to have surgery the same day or around…

Hello everyone! First time post here ☺️ glad I found this site. Anyway, what was the moment you decided to go through with the surgery? I feel like since the beginning I've been on the fence. My doctors (cardio, pulmonary, primary) all believe that surgery is the right choice for me, but the impression I have is that they want me to get the surgery as a preventative. I've gotten so big that right now I'm lucky I have nothing going on. In fact, my cardiologist said she doesn't usually push surgery but that I'd be the perfect candidate because I'm young and healthy without any issues. I'm 26, 4'10 and 240 pounds. I started Saxenda on January 18 an…

So saw the surgeon today and i will be on a 2 week liquid diet which realllllllllyyyyyyy sucks. They will call me in the next day or two to schedule the surgery. Also paid the money today which was a sad sad thing lol I had to call the bank to let the transaction go thru since it was sooo high. They also provided the liquid diet shakes there at the office... Oh this is gonna be torture lol. I already told everyone in the house that once this two weeks diet starts no one is allowed to order any type of outside food. lol

Hi all! I still do not know which surgery I am getting as of yet, as my first dietician appt was last week. She has me on a protein first diet... about 1500 calories a day etc to start getting used to the way I will be eating post surgery. No date yet for surgery,. btw. Assuming June or July. How many of you had to do this and what did you find eating works good for you? Ive been watching a lot of Youtube videos on what they ate before and after. Im doing a lot of mushy high protein foods already. Refried beans with sour cream, soups, tons of eggs, etc. But for snacking I was told to always eat protein first!! Im only a week in and I have not had 1 sweet yet! …

Spoke to the bariatric center today and they said all my test came back good that i am approved for the surgery. Appointment number 2 with the surgeon tomorrow which will go over some stuff and then i go next door to schedule my surgery and they will let me know how long of a liquid diet i will be on before the surgery and also i can buy the protein shakes there they said which i will buy a couple since i have no idea what they taste like. Then comes the very sad part... I start writing checks to pay for this surgery. I'm gonna cry watching nearly $18,000 come out of my checking account lol.

I know there are a few other March 27th surgeries and I would love to get to know you guys. I feel disconnected from anyone and there are a few different march threads I can’t tell which one will stick so I decided to start one for the 27th people. My name isTracy, I live in Nashville and my next appointment for preop is March 5th. I’m excited and nervous at the same time and I will believe all of this really happened when I wake up from anesthesia and they told me my bypass is complete. I am married with 2 kids.

  26. Hello all, I am having trouble with my band and want to get it removed. I have acid reflux constantly and I'm worried it's ruining my esophagus. I always feel like I have a lump in my throat. I was advised to remove the band and get a gastric bypass in its place so I don't gain all the weight back that I've lost and will continue to lose weight. My presurgery weight was 315 lbs. I got down to 195 over a five-year period but I had some issues. I had a slippage a couple of years after I got it and had to get it repaired. I had an incident where I couldn't get anything down (even water) so they removed all of the fluid. I was afraid to get it filled again. I've gained …

Hi guys. I'm in the process of getting my checklist complete before receiving my surgery date. I am unsure of which procedure I want to get. I am 34 years old, 5'4 @ 225lbs. My BMI is 38.6 and I carry alot of my weight in my abdomen. I have type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and PCOS. I aspire to get pregnant again, but am currently suffering from infertility due to the PCOS. I had my consultation last week and am trying to make my mind up about which surgery is best for me. My doctor is basically letting me chose. Bypass helps eliminate the diabetes, but I'm not fond of the idea of having to take vitamins forever. I am a sweets eater. I love my sweets (cookies/candy).…

  31. Started by liveaboard15,

Did my nuclear stress test yesterday. Its a simple test but takes forever. 4 hours. Worst part of it was the IV lol took 20 minutes to find a vein for the IV. Luckily they did not need to inject me with medication to raise my heart rate, I simply walked on the treadmill. Got results back today. Everything is good. They gave me a pre op cardiac clearance form. Now to call the bariatric office tomorrow and see what the next step is since i am done with all the pre op stuff.

One thing i look forward to is actually finding clothing that fits once i have my surgery. I normally wear the same thing everyday, A white tshirt and basketball type shorts everyday. Last couple days been looking for actual clothes for a event tomorrow (Dress pants, collard shirt) and wow its been impossible... Me being 5'4 and 315lb. and havent worn real clothing like that in years. went to several stores and it was impossible to find anything that fit and i have a closet full of nice nearly brand new clothing that i havent been able to wear since 2016. hoping i get this cardiac clearance for surgery next week and can get this show on the road.

Hi I had gastric sleeve operation 5 month ago and I lost 18 kilo since then. This month I had my period but then my bleeding will not stop. my Dr tested me for bacteria and it came positive and she gave me Penicillin to use. I didn't had bleeding two days but now I have bleeding again today. I had pain in my stomach and I noticed that I have bleeding. I don't know what is wrong and why this happened. I'm frustrated and very sad.

I just can't relate to anyone on here because i have not had my SX yet i know i chat with others and ask them what their experience(s) were and strike up a conversation after all we're all in this together right. I would like to talk about self-esteem after all it effects all of us the reason i bring this up because isn't it vicious cycle that we (i know i do ) tend to blame ourselves for the situation we are in ,for example i blamed myself for my bi-lateral hip replacement when i was alone at home when i was discharged from the hospital i never felt so alone in alone in all my life i bring this up because my self-esteem was shot and i was loaded with guilt and i blamed m…

I used to be on here back in 2012, I had the Lap Band done, but last year had to have it removed. Not sure if it was Covid or all the issues I had before and after surgery this past year but I have now ended with Gastroparesis. Or slow/ delayed emptying. My Gastro is sending me to weight loss surgery as I think he said the Bypass seems to help the problem. I fit the bill for weight loss surgery with out this issue, BMI, diabetes etc. . My question involves digestion. Does anyone know how it affects the bowels ? I don’t want to live in the bathroom . So i posted on here that last week i did my EKG and it came back abnormal and they schedualed me for a nuclear stress test. So they billed my insurance and the diagnosis code is OLD MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION. Googled that and thats basically a heart attack... I possibly had a heart attack in the past and not know about it... Never came up during my visit yesterday with the cardiologist. Thats freaky if thats true.

  42. Hello all, I am about a month before surgery, and I am curious about how the weight loss has affected those who have collapsed arches / flat feet / those who wear orthotics in their shoes? Right now that is my biggest pain, so I'd love to know if it improved with the weight loss, and if so, roughly how long it took to improve the pain in feet and knees. Thanks!

I have my pre-op procedures of upper GI and chest X-ray on Tuesday morning and my pre-op primary care physician appointment for clearance on Tuesday afternoon. I’m getting closer! After I had finished my nutritional class requirements at the first of January I thought surgery was imminent as we were told in the doctor talk that we were about a month away. But as I’ve read on here, enjoy the journey. Don’t rush. Be patient. Be gentle. I haven’t been very patient which is very evident by how little I chewed my food! I’ve been working on that. I’m turning 60 this week! I am excited that this milestone and my wls are close together. I feel ready for some good changes.…

After that i will get the yes or no for clearance for surgery but the doctor said i should be good to go. Hate IV needles lmao.
