Normal or not? 6 days post VSG and I can eat all of this?

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I had my surgery on Monday 4th April in Manchester, UK.

  • The first 2 days were awful (lots of pain, nausea and vomiting)
  • The 3rd and 4th days were better (threw up for the last time, had some lovely hot showers, pain manageable)
  • The 5th and 6th days have been amazing! (out to cafes and shops, no nausea or pain, even drove for an hour)

I am experiencing a brilliant recovery, I think.

BUT... I'm worried - only that I can take in much more liquid than I expected.

I have just eaten a whole can of strained roast chicken soup with no problem at all. It's far more than the few tablespoons that I hear about other people struggling to get down. I don't feel any restriction or signals that I've had enough.

Is it still considered "normal"? 😮

Example: today I've had 2 pints of skimmed milk, a pint of Water, 3 cups of milky tea and 2 tins of cream of chicken Soup. None of it was a problem!

Thanks in advance of your wisdom and advice xxx

liquids tend to go through you more quickly so you don’t feel any restriction or real sense of fullness which is why you need to tread carefully. All because you can doesn’t mean you should. Remember all those sutures & staples holding your tummy together.

Were you given any recommended portion sizes? Are you getting in or close to getting in your Protein goals (usually advised from 60 to 80g)? Over what time frame are you drinking this Fluid? We’re usually advised to consume 64oz/2litres of fluids including shakes, Soups, broths, herbal or green teas, Water, etc. which you are exceeding (if my maths is correct) which isn’t really an issue. Remember sip slowly. Leave a few minutes between sips. If you are really concerned call your surgeon & your dietician.

Glad you are recovering so well.

PS - Some people struggle at first because of swelling from the surgery & breathing tube. I struggled to swallow for a couple of days & then wasn’t interested in eating/drinking which why it was tough to meet my goals to begin.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
