Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

Hi all. I've been lurking the past few weeks, researching heavily. My insurance has cleared me for sleeve but I'm not as sure now as I was when I chose that surgery. My last hurdle is labs and upper GI. I'm bouncing back and forth between sleeve and bypass. My doubts about the sleeve include the risk of developing GERD. I see a lot of revision stories and I don't want that. My main reason for choosing the sleeve was to keep the pyloric valve intact and avoid dumping. It also seems to allow normal medication action - I take a number of meds. I'm creating a list of questions for my surgeon because I want to make the best choice but man, I must admit to feeling dizzy wi…

less than 3 weeks to my surgery date, Nov 3, 2022! I feel like I am over preparing!! save me from myself lol I have ordered my last batch of protein shakes (tho most of them will be incorporated into pre op diet but will have some after) and a variety of products for my liquid phase and beyond for home and to keep at my desk at work (protein shots, bariatric protein soup mix, special drink mixes etc… about $100 worth total of a variety of products to try) … also already have a list of stuff to get from the grocery store before surgery for the first two weeks or so… want to be stocked up and not have to think much also starting some nervous cleaning (whic…

any ladies have a c-section and the VSG surgery? (obviously not at the same time lol lol) My surgical experience is 2 c-sections in a year 18/19 years ago. (I currently have 2 18 year olds until Nov 10th) Does the physical recovery from VSG compare with c-section at all or too different to compare ? I was asking about recovery i pre op and they said what many on the forum have said; it’s not a very painful recovery for most. I said that I had two c-sections and they said it’s nothing compared to a c-section. As always, tho, I want to hear first hand experiences !!

i had preop blood work yesterday and saw the results in my electronic chart yesterday evening (before dr lol). i normally have an elevated wbc (been checked out twice by hematologist - it’s just how i am) but it was elevated a bit from my normal range… i had the flu in early october and wonder if that could be messing with me still… i am waiting to hear from dr to see if that matters to them… it’s so high from normal i expect a call, but it’s just slightly higher for me naturally did you have a pre op issue with wbc? how was it handled ?

  9. Hi Friends, New here…I am wondering if anyone has had experience with having any laparoscopic surgeries after getting a tummy tuck. I had an abdominoplasty in 2013 after having a child and losing weight and having a lot of extra skin. Now almost 10 years later I am looking into having a gastric sleeve done. Looking for anyone with experience. Was it harder for the surgeon due to scar tissue or things moved around? Thanks in advance.

just wanted to share my pre op appointment experience! i got to the appointment. they weighed me and had to sign a lot of paperwork. they went over again my pre op diet and post op diet. they went over the medication i was going to take prior to surgery and what pain med i would be discharged with. I found out that he is having me stay one night in the hospital ( outpatient was a possibility) The surgeon came in and I asked a couple questions which he answered. then i was sent to another part of the hospital to do pre op registration, blood work and an ekg. was a busy afternoon! my appointment was at 220 and i walked out of the hospita…

Hi everyone, I had an appointment with my primary today for the medical clearances, she did the referrals for the EKG and XRay. Does anyone have any experience on how long that took as self paid? She asked I held off on bloodwork until those are done, that way I was cleared before paying for them, but I'm afraid this may delay things. Thank you!

Has anyone ever had the op cancelled due to cheating on pre op? I’ve been pretty good staying within the 1200 calories (mostly)- Optifast shakes, veges, 2 litres water a day- and the odd bit of protein -but I have blown out a few times- is this common?? I’ve probably lost about 5-6 kg in 3.5 weeks.. I’m 165cm x 94kg. BMI if 34.5 now I’m starting to worry- I have my op booked for Thursday this week.

  17. Just checking to see if anyone has used Dr. Doucette w/ Alabama Surgical Associates in Huntsville, AL.

  18. My surgery date has been scheduled for 11/14 and I'm starting to get scared. I am opting for the Sleeve, but I am concerned about GERD. My doc says the majority of those cases he sees are due to eating habits. I am hoping I can avoid that. I still just don't know I am making the right decision. Just really getting cold feet. I was hoping I'd get past this by now.

My surgery is scheduled for November 3rd and I am now on my 2 week pre-op diet. I have SO many people trying to talk me out of the surgery and telling me I don't need it. I have so many questions and I am just praying I make all the right choices as I have tried everything previous to this decision. Any and all suggestions and advice is appreciated. I have Multiple Sclerosis so this decision was for health reasons.

  21. Started by Merida,

My VSG is scheduled for January 10th! I'm so excited to start living my life again!

  22. My bypass is scheduled for 11/30. I just made myself a countdown clock and had a moment. It's really happening. All these months of talking and planning and thinking are coming to fruition and I'm both elated and scared to death. :-D

  23. Started by Softtacocrumbs,

I'm a bit scared to go through with my surgery. It's planned for late November. I talked to the nutritionist for pre-op and she realized something was wrong with my hormones, because I generally don't eat much and I work out a lot. She protested with my PCP to look at my hormones, and told him I needed to see an endocrinologist. Long story short I'm on meds for hypothyroidism, but my bariatric surgeon and PCP still say I need the surgery. My endocrinologist says don't do it. I've been on the hypothyroid meds for 3 weeks and I'm down 32lbs and officially under 200lbs. Am I being too sensitive and thinking my PCP and surgeon are fat phobic or should I trust them? My nutriti…

  24. So I just went to a general surgeon for a clinic visit bc I have a hiatal hernia and he recommended I have gastric bypass. My BMI is 44 and he said he couldn’t repair my hiatal hernia unless I did the weight loss surgery. I’m waiting for their office to call me to tell me if my insurance will cover it. I’m hopeful that I will be able to get it done and lose weight and get healthy. Does anyone have any thoughts on gastric bypass? I downloaded an audiobook about it and the author said he made this website so I joined.

  26. Started by mkellee,

I'm so ready for this. I was scheduled for August 16th for the sleeve but when they got in there the Dr found a massive haital hernia. So it took priority and now it's almost healed. They said November surgery. Just called the Dr's office and they said they'll have the scheduler get hold of me. Yay!!!

  27. Started by feisty one,

I got my blood work done yesterday. I was able to look up my results online this morning. My A1C was 7.1!!!!! That is the highest it has ever been. I am concerned that the surgeon will cancel with it being that high. Anybody else have close to that number and was still able to get surgery?

  30. Hi, I've been preparing to have laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery for a few months now. My plan has been to go to school part time (only taking two classes; Linear Algebra and Data Structures) this coming spring semester (starting in a couple weeks) , and have the surgery during the semester, probably in February. With Covid-19, being in school after the surgery won't require much physical activity on my part; just sitting in my apartment at a computer desk, writing math problems or doing work on a computer. But it occurred to me recently that I really have no idea how I'm going to feel after the surgery. If I'm always going to be tired and unable to focus, that co…

Surgery finally approved and scheduled for late Nov. Has anyone had to be on a pre-op liquid diet for 4 weeks, this is my doctors recommendation.

  32. Started by aussiedoodlelover94,

My doctor put me on the 2 week pre op diet. I am on day 8, but cheated during dinner the first 5 days. I cheated by having a hamburger patty those nights and had a cheesesteak another night. I have been back on track and was still losing weight during that time. I am aware of what the pre op diet is for and have found different things to help with not eating. I just want to know if I will be okay since I’m back on track or should I reschedule?

Hey! I got my first round of blood work done, and projected surgery date is January. I’m iron deficient, which is chronic for me, low folate, low vitamin d, which I knew, and low B1 thiamine plasma. The B1 and Folate were a total surprise to me. My results came in tonight, but my surgeon hadn’t reviewed them yet, but here I am researching anyway. Lol. I’m sure she will get me all situated with additional vitamins. Did anyone else have abnormal blood work before surgery? I’m so excited for this journey, and can’t wait to see improvement on all of my numbers, and not just my weight! ?

I’m trying to figure out if I will be ok for surgery the week after next my son’s birthday it was last week which I also started my preop diet, which was on the third and my sons birthday was on the fifth. I had two cupcakes, but I did start my preop diet, the right way until his birthday then yesterday I went to a party which I had two slices of pizza but in between those times I was still eating when I was supposed to and also doing my protein shakes like I’m supposed to I have one more week which is coming up of the preop diet and I wanted to know do you guys think I will be OK?

  35. Started by Carla Harris,

I’m 4 weeks post op and I have been nauseous since I had my surgery. It’s too the point I can’t eat or drink. Water makes me the most nauseous with or without crystal light. It feels like the water gets stuck. My surgeon did an ultrasound last week and said I need my gallbladder removed. I’m hoping this fixes the nausea. Anyone else had these symptoms ?

  36. Started by KRod6,

I am scheduled to have my surgery on October 11th. I've been hearing the gas pain is the worst and only pain. Worse than the scar pain. This makes me nervous being close to my heart. I heard it feels as if you may be experiencing a heart attack. How bad is the pain? Do you feel pain in stomach from the staples? Do you feel more pain from the incisions? I am really nervous!

Hi everyone. ? I am a 175kg/385lb 23-year old female from Australia and am due for my VSG on November 30th. I am wanting to know how everyone with Obstructive Sleep Apnea went with their surgeries? I have trouble tolerating my CPAP, however I am trying my best and keeping it on longer and longer each night. Have recently just quit nicotine vaping too and am really struggling. I'm hoping to find some friends or support networks for people who are going into surgery around a similar time as me. Any and ALL advice/opinions are welcome! ?

I am in the pre-op stage (October 10) and am wondering what kitchen equipment or tools people find most helpful in the general diet stage. Do you keep it simple (good ol pots and pans) or do you use an air fryer or instant pot, ect…?

  39. Started by You Are My Sunshine,

Hello! I'm on the 2-week liver shrink right now, 1 week in. I'm experiencing what feels like indigestion, maybe sour stomach or heartburn. It's very mild, but definitely there. Anyone else feeling this? This isn't my first rodeo with the liquid diet, but I don't remember this issue from before.

  40. My last nutritionist appointment was 23 days ago. I recieved a surgery date of October 6th, and I was under the assumption my paperwork would be submitted that week. I called the surgeons office today for an update and she said they will submit closer to the surgery date, "in about two weeks". Is this a normal time frame? I get more approval anxiety by the day! My pre-op EKG and labs appointment is scheduled for September 12th but they're not even submitting my claim until around that time? My patience is running low ?‍??

I am a high BMI girl (over 60 ) but have changed my diet, worked on eating disorders and just tried to change my life this year. Been doing pre op keto diet since late august waiting on my surgery date. Down 70 lbs this year so yay there.. My NSV was my wardrobe changes! i was buying mostly size 34 shirts ( a few bigger). I saw a shirt on amazon that i liked that was biggest at size 28. I ordered it for “later” after surgery- but as a lark i tried it on and it fit quite well!! I wore it yesterday and got asked for the first time if I had lost weight. Guess clothes that fit make a difference;) I went and ordered four more size 28 shirts. If they fit too, I am g…

  44. I'm scheduled October 11th for VSG and due to a history of gallstones my surgeon is going to remove my gallbladder at the same time. Has anyone else had a double procedure? I have a list of questions for my surgeon at our last pre-op appointment, but I'm curious to hear any similar experiences from someone whose gone through it.

So, I had a busy morning, and I left my shaker cup on the counter between meetings and when I looked at it probably two hours later to take it and clean it, the drops of optifast in the shaker had some green spores on it.. Any one else?

  48. Hello! I’m new here in the investigation stage of doing sleeve surgery. I met with a weight loss Dr in May and started naltrexone (I was already on high dose bupropion) and a high protein/low carb diet. We discussed sleeve surgery for later this year. I lost 10lbs that month despite going on a cruise , but found out just before the cruise that we would be moving over the summer. I pretty much put my weight on hold and went into survival mode dealing with the move and kids who didn’t want to move, etc. But now we’ve moved and settled in and I’m miserable - I can’t be active at all with my kids, clothes are uncomfortable, autoimmune disorders and pain are out of control, an…

Has anyone gotten through this process while also using suboxone. I’m worried my surgeon will not allow it. When I first met him, he told me I would have to stop the medicine for 2 weeks before he could perform the surgery. It made me feel like he didn’t even understand what suboxone was - because if he did, he wouldn’t ask me to going into complete withdrawal. I’m hoping he will work with my prescribing doc, but it’s his Choice to make, and his only. I’m hoping someone out there can give me some hope because I’m starting to lose mine ☹️
