December Delights 2009

Recommended Posts

Forgot to mention I had my first fill last Wednesday. I got 5 ccs in a 10 cc (I think) band.

The nurse was very clear she did not think I would get any restriction until the 2nd or 3rd fill, but I do believe I have some.

Im reading everyone's post and noticed most people are getting 3 cc's. I got 5 cc's on my first fill 01/19 wonder why?. I do not go back for another 4 weeks, curious to see how much they give then.

I had my first fill last week and also had 3CC's. PA said not to expect much restriction till at least the third fill. Was pretty disaapointed to hear that. On the good side my acid reflux is finally getting better.

Ocracoke,

I felt the same way before I had my first fill. I could basically eat what I wanted as long as I took my time and chewed well. Although I could have I didn’t because I didn’t want my surgery to be in vain so I still measured my foods and exercised. I've had my first fill 01/19 and it went well. I can say that now that it's over (don’t like needles)...lolol... I've stopped getting on the scale to help me stay focused. Initially I think I found myself on the scale every 30 minutes I was becoming obsessed. Now I weigh myself every other week.

I really appreciate your kind and encouraging words, and you're right we will all get through this together.

I just got my first fill on Thursday and they put in 3cc's. I go back in 4 weeks. After reading everyone's posts, I have to say I feel a little better that I'm not the only one out there that's getting a little frustrated and is struggling a little. I think the hardest for me has been not drinking right before, during and right after I eat. I had lost 24 pounds total on the pre-op and post-op liquid diet. Once I was able to eat again, I managed to gain back about 12 pounds, but, then, I've re-lost about 10 of it. I will say that I have lost a total of 9 inches in a month, so, that's something I suppose. I'm not sure what I was expecting. I knew that the band wasn't a "miracle weight loss" device, I knew it was a tool to help you lose weight, but, I feel like I've plateaued before I've even gotten out of the gate! Grrrr, it's kind of frustrating, isn't it? I'm not the only one, right? Is this normal? I want to start losing again!

also everyone saying they aren't getting much restriction on the first fill - I feel restriction.

I went to Breakfast at cracker barrell and not one single item on my plate was finished. Normally I could have cleared my plate and ate several biscuits. My portions have dropped to about 1/2 now already.

I don't get my first fill until a week from tomorrow. I still have some restriction, but not as much when first banded. However, I'm eating LOTS less than pre-band, which in and of itself is huge! I've lost 3 pounds this week and am only 2 pounds away from my Valentine's Day Challenge of a 12 pound loss. I'm very happy with my progress so far. I'm hoping that with my first fills, I'll be even more restricted and the amount lost will increase. I'm only 6 pounds away from what my driver's license reads! lol

I got 3ccs in my 10cc band and my doctor thought I might be too tight. He also put me back on liquids for 2 weeks, which I was really good about for the first week, but I've been pretty hungry and have had no difficulty with mushies. 3ccs wasn't too tight, but I bet you ARE feeling some restriction with 5ccs - that makes sense to me.

I do find it baffling... all the differences.

So glad you guys are here! You keep me motivated when I feel like having a cheesecake. Feeling emotional and I am sure everyone understands how eating and emotions correlate. I am glad I am banded! I am having some physical problems so getting a fill isn't even an option right now. You guys will probably be on fill two or three before I have one. Keep it going Delights!!

I got 3ccs in a 10cc empty band. My next fill is in 2 weeks and every 2 weeks thereafter. She said I would get another 1.5 next time. I am hungry and struggling. I lost another 2.5 lbs but it's coming off slowly and is all difficult. Hope this helps!

hey thanks everyone i'm glad you like my post. I have less than a pound to go until I hit 30 pounds gone forever. After the workout i had last night If I do it again tonight I'm sure to break the 30 pound mark tomorrow. LOL

I did a 13 minute mile on the cross trainer (sorta like an eliptical) after already doing 20+ minutes on the treadmill with a 2.5 incline and 3 miles an hour speed. I was dripping sweat. LOL

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
