Be very careful of Protein bullets. I've been told by my nutritionist that they contain collegen Protein and we need whey protein. Even the ones touted as being whey protein have more collegen protein than whey protein. Therefore, when you look at the label and it says 40 grams of protein, the majority of it is still collegen protein and not whey protein.

Good luck to you. I am 5 weeks 2 days and still struggling with protein.

Thank you for the advice! I have tried the Protein bullet (vial) from Walmart and it was terrible! I know there's not much liquid in it so I should just turn it up, but I can't make myself do it! I just know I'll throw it up if I do. It's soooo nasty! Thanks for the tip on Collegen protein Amy... I did not know that... will watch that from now on. :)

Thanks, Amy! My Dietician said NOTHING about that. I may have to bring that up when I start attending the support group meetings once I get my surgery date.

I did go to a WLS support group and a rep from Bariatric Advantage was there. They just recently started carrying whey Protein bullets. You might check them out.

Im one week out...how much Protein are you actually able to get in a day? Im still drinking about 2 bottled waters a day and maybe 5g Protein a day if that. I hate crystal lite and Im still on the liquid stage. I'm not just knock down tired but require one nap a day. Still in pain so I don't walk yet. On a scale of 1-10...its about an 7 all the time. When I drink, its only about 3 sips and I'm done for a while. I mostly only crave Water which may be from the pain medicine. Is there another way to get protein in a liquid other than store bought protein drinks or vials?

Isopure is considered a clear liquid and has tons of protein. It is available at GNC. Some of the flavors are pretty good, some not so much. My dietician said this would count as Water too since it is clear, non-carbonated, and caffeine free. (both of which we can't have anyways).

Good Luck!!

My dietician even suggested I try the Protein bullets/shots to get more protein in. When I asked about them having more collagen protein than whey she was, surprised!!! Then she said, that's not good, you need the whey Proteins. I can be sarcastic as hell, but, I just looked at her and smiled! I, truly, have very little confidence in her. I always felt something was off with her, but, did not want to judge her unfairly. Thank God I found this site! I'll be turning to the dieticians at my job for help from now on! Oh yeah, made my own cafe mocha progtein shake this morning with Decaf coffee, OMG!!!!!!! Delish!!!

Are you on soft/pureed foods yet? Bariatric Choice has some yummy puddings that have lots of Proteins. 5 grams per day is not going to cut it!

Have you tried the Protein bullets? You can get them an Wal-Greens, CVS, online (only a few at WalMart). Here's a link to some. http://www.walgreens...protein&y=0&x=0

several different flavors, and you get 40+ grams of Protein in about 3 oz! I'm going to try to find a few of the singles at WalGreens this weekend just to see how they are, and then I'll think about ordering the larger quantities that are only available online. My dietician suggested them so I did a little hunting yesterday.

I hadn't heard of these, I will definitely getting some for post op!! I keep reading how hard it is to keep things down, this would be a tremendous help!

Please note the post from "Back~To~Amy". While protein is important, the type is equally important and the bullets are not as helpful as they appear.

Chike shakes are AWESOME!!! Go to ilikechike.com to test their samples for FREE they will send you up to 3 of the 6 flavors that they have in stock... strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, orange, banana and coffee. I order the strawberry and vanilla flavor as you can add coco powder to your vanilla powder. I also like the chocolate shake from Premire nutrition sold at costco. I really hope you give Chike a try.

great info in this thread!

One of my favorite shakes is a choc Protein mix, PB2 (powdered peanut butter) and SF caramel coffee Syrup. My other fav is vanilla shake with a tiny bit of pistacio pudding (dry) added. YUMMY

I am still pre-op. I am sure my tastes will change after surgery.

Reese's shake

1.5 scoop vanilla Protein powder

1 TBSP creamy Peanut Butter (I used crunchy)

1 TBSP hershey's cocoa powder (I used swiss miss hot cocoa mix)

8 oz. unsweetened almond milk (I used FF braums milk)

4 ice cubes (I used crushed and to my liking)

Put in a blender and enjoy! IT'S GOOD TOO! I wonder how it'd taste with PB extract instead of PB JenniJune! Hey it'd save on calories (but does cut some Protein out too, oh boo).

I have quite a few other shake recipes if you want them, but that is one that I used just the other day and it was good - the whole family thought so.

And protein bullets are nasty to me... but try Cytosport's whey isolate drinks <<for any phase in the diet plan (i.e. clears TO full).

They are RTDs that I bought from Vitamin Shop and they are Clear liquids. If memory serves me correctly, it's 38 g of protein per 16 oz. bottle. The best two of the three flavors that I liked were tangerine and tropical. You can buy them individually from Vit Shop's refrigerated section. If you don't like them, return the opened container with the receipt w/in 7 days and you get a full refund! (love vit shop for that reason alone) :)

As you progress to real foods, it's much easier to get your protein in via real protein sources (i.e. fish, meat, shrimp, etc.). I eventually cut most of my protein additions (like shakes/RTDs/protein puddings) out (as they add in quick calories and it slowed me down in losing/reaching my goal).

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
