I recently had the Lap Band Surgery in Tijuana with Dr. Kelly, under the care of Dr. Betancourt. It was a wonderful experience. Dr. Betancourt takes care of your every need and treats you like a best friend or family member, not just a patient. Dr. Kelly did an amazing job and checked in on me at the 5 star hotel that Dr. Betancourt put you me in. They make themselves available to you 24 hours a day. The service was the best I have seen and I do live in Canada where we have great medical services. I would highly recommend Dr. Betancourts medical facility to anyone. It is a very clean and beautiful medical clinic with the best patient care I have ever seen. The doctors sti…

  4. I've been looking into lap band for a long time and finally decided to do it. It's all been a great idea theoretically, but now..it's going to happen!!! What am I doing?? I've had 2 laparoscopies for endometriosis, so the surgery part doesn't scare me. I was on Optifast for twelve weeks, so the liquid diet doesn't scare me. BUT, what if I can't fix the mental part fo me that can't figure out how to eat right? What if I can't fix the behaviors that got me here is the first place? Obviously, I couldn't fix them before or I wouldn't be logged on here now. I'm hoping it's normal to freak out like this a little. My pre-op visit is 3/19 and my surgery date is 4/3 with …

hello everyone. Found this sight while researching lap-band surgery. I would like to hear from anyone that would like to share the experience. What is the criteria? Are there doctors that will do the surgery if you dont meet the BMI. Mine is 31.6, I am 5 10. 220 lbs (last time i dared look at a scale), have battled with my weight for the past 8 years, have severe lower back pain, sleep apnea, joint aches and pains. I dont currently have insurance but am planning on getting some in the next few days. Will Insurance cover all or some of the surgery? But I could be a self pay if needed. THanks in advance for the info! And best wishes to you all!! ttbseffy

  6. I was scheduled for gastric bypass, and the day before the surgery I backed out. My insurance only paid for gastric bypass at the time, so I felt that was my only choice. NOw they will pay for the lapband also. I already was preapproved for gastric bypasss, it took me about two months to get preapproved and get all my 5 years of weights. Anyway, I am wondering if anyone else had this same circumstance. Do you think it will take as long since I already have some documentation at ( gastric bypass ) the other doctor. The other surgery date was over a year and a half ago. Let me know

Hi everyone, I'm Gena and I'm still kinda new to this forum, even though I registered a while ago. I found this forum when I first started to check everything out about being banded about a year ago. But I decided to try 1 more diet before I did anything more. So I went on the Atkins Diet in April of 2007 and stay on it till the end of Feb. of 2008. I lost around 40 to 50 lbs till October, then from November to Feburary I wasn't losing anything. I kept telling myself that I was in a slump and I'll start losing again, but nothing. So on Feb. 23rd I stopped the diet and I have made an appt. with Dr. Clark in Ellis Hospital to go to the orientation for the lapband( before I …

I am at a BMI of 43, and it is hard to move, let alone exercise. I spend hours reading at the Lab Band site and now here. I don't find an…

My surgery is scheduled for 3/26. I have lots of questions. Many people mention being on a liquid diet prior to surgery. My doctor is asking for a high protein diet, but does not have to be liquid. Is that common? Also, will I be hungry while on the restricted liquid diet after surgery?

It all happened so fast I was there getting info, next thing there was a cancellation and I was booked in for only 2 1/2 weeks out.I am so excited for the new life ahead of me. Currently struggling through the pre-op diet. I think I might switch to liquids. The docs has me on unlimited yogurt and cottage cheese and 1 chicken breast per day. Starting to gag on the chicken now. I know how important it is to be strict pre-op. Any suggestions on what else I can add to me pre-op diet?

I started about a year and a half ago, trying to get weight loss surgery. I was going to do the gastric bypass. My insurance company required 6 months of classes and LOTS of tests. So, I plugged away at it. I had a stress test, EKG, sleep study, psych eval, breathing test and more. The last test was a mammogram, then I would have completed all of my requirements. Unfortunately, they found stage 3 breast cancer. I wasn't shocked, my Mom and my Sister both had it. So, I had to give up my weight loss dream and focus on fighting cancer. I had a mastectomy, 8 months of chemo and 33 radiation treatments. My prognosis isn't great, I had 7 positive lymph nodes. Strange…

Weighing in at 270, 5’8”. I am currently taking a lot of insulin (160 units of nph and 50 regular each day) that I can not lose weight at all. I have done the diet and exercise bit. Spent a ton of money on a personal trainer and I am/was the most fit 270lb person I knew, but could not drop the weight or keep the diabetes under good control. So my exploration into LapBand surgery has begun. I would like very much to hear from others with my similar conditions who have had the band “in…

It likes to move around, now if I can only get it to move out.... Lost 11 pounds this week, which I think is too much. Not sure if am eating (drinking) enough. See the doctor on Monday and I guess I will find out. Michelle Surgery was done at Desert Springs Hospital, Vegas by Dr. Darren Soong. Love him.

At my heaviest, which was just prior to starting the pre-op liquid diet I was 125.7kg (277 pounds). Today I weigh 116kg (255.7 pounds). So in 18 weeks I have only lost 9.7kg (21 pounds). I never realised just how much of an emotional eater I was until after the surgery. It's really quite unnerving. I have been feeding my emotional hunger with ice cream & chocolate, both of which go through the band very easily. And I was just wondering if anyone was ever worried, panicky, extremely stressed about there surgery? I never have been the only thing that worries me is recovery - I take ages to recover, it took me about 2 months to get over my last lung biopsy and stop taking the pain meds, I know that the lap band won't be the same as that but I was just wondering how everyones experiences were with it?

They want it off right now so I'm on a starvation diet and it's so frustrating! I want to hear from real people who have had it done, and how it has affected your life. My sister has had gastric bypass, and even though she has lost the weight, she hates that she has ever had it done. I have a couple of questions, please. #1 What does it mean to get a fill? Why do you have to have fills? How is that done? Is something left on the outside of your body? How costly are the fills (my insurance does not pay for them)? How often are they done? #2 What kind of diet restrictions are the…

I like to say that I'm blind, not to elicit sympathy, but I've found it's best for me to be open about that from the start. I have been overweight for most of my adult life, and at times, pretty depressed about it, not to mention how I think others see me. I'm terrified about having surgery; I had major surgery about six years ago, and have a terrible fear of needles. I've been known to walk out of labs because I couldn't stand the thought of the sting, which is more than that to me. I am getting banded on St Patty's Day in central PA. I found this forum recently and I gotta tell you, great advice. Thank you all! Maybe some day I will be one of those "old timers" helping people benefit from my success. Trying to think proactively here, otherwise, I'll lose it. I had my first consultation last month, and have scheduled an appt. for psych evaluation, a session with a dietician, and a sleep study. All of these are scheduled for April in the hope that I can maybe shorten the 6 month wait for the ins. co. At this point I'm still not sure if they will cover the surgery.

I was banded almost two years ago and am back where I started. The first few months following surgery I lost 30 pounds then it stalled. Six months later, the weight began to creep back up. I know I am not perfect with the eating thing, but I don't eat nearly what I used to eat. I am really discouraged.

I was banded this past Wednesday, February 13th. I have been resting and healing, although it has been a lot more difficult and painful then I expected. I am 30 years old and I have been quite over weight my entire adult life. Before the co-mordities kick in, I wanted to take a proactive measure and get the surgery while I am still in good health. I am excited about the future and the prospect of being able to live again and enjoy life without all of the worries, stress, and insecurities of being overweight. I look forward to reading and learning from your posts.
