Hi all. I am inuit. I live in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. After a 3 year wait, I saw the baratric surgeon today. He said i most likely will have surgery early in 09. The entire thing is covered by medicare. I thought I wanted the gastric bypass but after meeting with him, now I think the lapband may be better. I am 5 foot 2 inches tall and weigh 261 lbs. Can't hardly wait to feel normal again.

Good afternoon Sistas, I got some difficult news today ...I am anemic (found out at pre-surgery blood test) and they may want to postpone my surgery until my numbers look better. :tt2::eek::mad: My PCP told me and of course I cried...the good news was that my irregular heartbeat did not show up (good EKG) and my prior challenge with my platelet levels is gone - they are normal again. I SO want to have my surgery on Nov 17th! :frown: I am praying that taking my Iron supplement and eating iron-rich foods will help bring them up, and that my surgeon doesn't feel it's that much of an issue... Pray for me, sistas - I sure need it right now! :cool2::crying::w…

It's just after midnight and I've been surfing the web for a lap band community to join, in addition to the realize band site. I started the process on Sept. 22, 08 with my initial visit to the surgeon's office. I just had my first weigh in since, starting the six month diet (my insurance requires) on Oct 27, 08. I'm down 6.5 lbs and I pleased with the results but, have to admit I was so hungry 4 days into the diet but, I go through it and now, week 6 is so much easy. I'd like to thank everyone for sharing their stories and photos, it is encouraging and truly appreciated. Gina

Hi all, I've just recently begun the process to having the lap band procedure done. That was Oct. 20, so far I've been to the polmonologist have to go back on Dec 5 for an EKG but he has granted my approval with all sorts of stipulations. Today I had my psychology appointment and then Wednesday (Thanksgiving Eve) I go see the nutritionist. December 1, I go see the suregon again, hopefully he will have everyones approvals by then to be able to submit to my insurance. I just wanted to say hello, if anyone has advice for m…

I had a Lap band performed by Dr. Stephen Hamn in Plano, TX. I can not say enough wonderful things about him and his staff. He has been extrememly caring and has taught me so much about how to use my band as a weight loss tool. I had my surgery over a year ago and have lost 105 lbs. My sister had a laparascopic gastric sleeve by Dr. Hamn and she is doing fantastic also. No problems and the weight is falling off quickly. I think Dr. Hamn has a wonderful bedside manner. He takes his time with you and does not rush you during your appointment. My sister is a nurse and asked many doctors about Dr. Hamn. They all gave him a thumbs up. I took at least 45 minutes with him on one…

He told me he wanted me to lose 15-20 lbs before surgery, and I am happy to say that when I returned for my 2 week weigh in I was down 5 lbs, and my BMI was down 1 as well. Hello - I have decided to move forward with lap band surgery and am scheduled for my consult with two doctors: Dr. Kirshenbaum and Dr. Chae. I'm having a hard time making a decision. Dr. C requires an overnight stay at the hospital and Dr. K is outpatient. I have had nothing but positive experiences at Sky Ridge Medical center, although my experience with Dr. C's scheduling is not stellar. Dr. C teaches other docs the procedure and to achieve Excellence ratings, but all the comments I've read about Dr. K are thoroughly positive and glowing. The cost difference between the two is about $5,000 - probably because of the costs of staying overnight at the hospital. I'll pay th…

While my husband and I have been married, our highest documented weight was 313 for me and 414 for him. We tried many different weight lost diets, Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, Adkins and much more. We would have a little success, get off the routine and the pounds came back and plus. In July of 2007 we got the Lap Band and now I am 180 and my hubby is 245. We are two new people. The Lap Band has been a tool for us. We still have to exercise and watch what we eat. A lot of people thi…

Here's my concern - my BMI is about 37.5, and I don't suffer from high blood pressure. I know this will probably make it difficult to get my Blue Cross PPO to approve since I don't meet the obvious criteria. It was a struggle through out my life with weight management. Tried all kinds of ways but in vane. When I was younger, my body could manage to handle the excess weight, but as soon as I reached 40, I started getting other co-morbidities. I got Sleep Apnea, was lethargic, and was close to getting hypertension and diabetes. Every year, when I would get my physical, I was scared what disease or health issue is coming next. In 2004, I switched my carrier to pharmaceutical sales. Talking to doctors and reading about different disease states, I got more aware to the disadvantages of being overweight. It was no brainier at that time, that if this is not controlled and I do not r…

Hi! I'm new to the site, but not the band. I was banded on 9/1/05 and was down 74 lbs at my lowest point. At the beginning of this year, I thought I could "take a break" and stopped going to the doctor. Although I didn't go back to fried foods or completely "off the wagon", I did stop paying attention. The result was an increase of 17 lbs. I've taken 11 lbs off since July, but need to get serious. I thought I would give this site a try as additional support. I have several close friends who have been banded, ironically because I got mine. But I think new discussions may help, so thanks in advance.:cursing:

I won't get into the nitty gritty, but after initially approving, then rescinding the offer two weeks later on a technicality citing that I was non-compliant with documentation that they said I never was required to have, they had to approve the procedure after reviewing recorded phone conversations I had on three separate occasions when I first started researching what was required for approval. I had to get my benefits coordinator involved and go all the way to a special review committee. Luckily, the recordings prooved that I did indeed ask if any additional documentation was requ…

Since then, the task has been challenging, especially until recently when I had my second fill, which seems to have given me some restriction. Until then, it was 1% band power and 99% bandpower, or so it seemed to me. Nonetheless I'v very pleased with the results; I started at 233 (before the pre-op 2 week liquid diet) and am now at 280.2. So those are pretty dramatic results! I'm only 5'1" so I still have over 50 lbs to go, but I already feel so much better. And it's so fun to sit down to a meal and fe…
