PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. In order for my doc to even submit to insurance for approval, I need to lose 20 lbs. I was not losing in the beginning and then I started seeing the scale move and now it's going back up again. I am ready to cry. I meet with him next week and he's probably gonna laugh at me and kick me out

How is this pre surgery diet? Is it hard to stay on before the band? I know it is important to loose that fat for the surgery. I am just wondering that if I don't have the willpower to stay on a diet now, how in the world am I going to do on a liquid diet for two weeks prior to surgery.:confused2: Do they give you supplements to help curb your appetite?:confused2:

Hello everyone! Due to my stupid doctors offices my surgery has been postponed from Monday the 9th till Friday the 13th because they require blood workexactly one week before surgery. Its one obsticle after another! It also means more days on this stupid liquid diet whichseems the most strictests I have encounter. But this will make me a stronger person! Thanks for letting me vent! Jackie

  4. I have been overweight for most of my adult life. Big boned was the explanation and quite true in my teens as I was very muscular, broad shouldered and round in the butt.... After miscarriages in my early twenties, two successful pregnancies for beautiful children, and two more miscarriages in between them my weight went crazy. Also I started to get Gerd, arthritis, IBS, diverticulosis, kidney stones and gallbladder issues. After my son was born in 2000 my female issues increased rapidly and I was in pain so much that exercising was intolerable. In 2006 after a year of non stop ER visits and doctor appointments I was diagnosed with Adenomyosis of the uterus. I had a total…

Hi Everyone! Had my PAT's in Yipsi last Thursday. They had some samples of drinks and a Protein bar to try,....om gosh! I tried the bar and couldn't even swallow it. I discretely spit it in a napkin and put it in the garbage. I guess I wasn't the only one to dislike it because there were about 15 other pieces in there! LOL. The drink was a Fuzzy Navel. I am really worried. Do they all have that gaggie taste to them? It is like swallowing sand. I know it is only for 2-3 weeks but there has got to be a better way (or taste combo) There were so many products in the Barix store it was overwhelming and then to buy stuff that I can't drink... I did buy the gift bag with sample…

Ok, so I met with the surgeon today he said that I have a total of 175lbs to loose to be at my ideal weight. He said that if I do the lapband I can only take off about 50lbs and that Id still be obese. I want the lapband because I am self pay and it is less risker. Also I am in fairly good shape for my size I dont get out of breath walking and Im able to run for a distance with out dying. I just need an extra push to get me going on my diet. He is going to let me get the Lapband but said I should be realistic about loosing weight. Now I have seen alot of people on here that have lost over 100lbs, am I not being realistic about my goals? I just want to loose a 100lbs.

Hi guys, I met with the bariatrician, Dr. Wieger today, started my 6 month physician supervised diet, everything looks good. I have to have an upper GI, which I think, is pretty routine, considering my acid reflux. I go back in 1 month and visit with a nutritionist. And meet with my surgeon, Dr. Davidson. www.wgtlossclinic.com I'm so excited I just had to share. Cathy

After 30 years of going up and down with my weight, trying everything to help me with losing weight, I looked into the lap band surgery. In January 2007, I had my first bariatric surgeon visit to begin the lap band qualifications. They said I was a perfect candidate. I weighed 234 lbs at 5'4 with high blood pressure. I have finished all my clearances and 10% weight loss requirement and I am presently 205 with a BMI of 35.2. When I had my 2nd surgeon consult in September, he questioned why I couldn't lose the rest on my own and told me to come back in three months. I was devastated. Well, that three months is up and I see him again on January 4. I thought I was a go…

If I am self pay, do I need to go to a seminar? One center I checked out... that is where they do the inital consulation, and it costs $100. One center said that if I felt that I was informed enough I did not need to go to one, but it is free if I want it. Other sites I have checked out, seem to steer you to the seminars first. I am a reader and a one on one kind of person, and I really hate seminars! :cursing: Do I have to go to one before surgery?

I am just waiting for my surgery date ( am recovering from a cold first). It should be within the next 3 weeks.. I have completed all the things my surgeon requires, support classes, education class, exercise class and mental evaluation. I guess as the time gets closer I am a bit nervous if I am making the right decision. I have talked to several people who have had meger results. At one of the support groups a woman reported that she lost 24lbs in the first month, after going to the education class I found out that your first adjustment is not till 4-6 weeks after surgery so her loss was more due to her diet than the assistance of the band. I spoke to one woman yesterday…

Today, I woke, no weight gained nor lost, but, Im bloated, and my jeans are tight. Three days ago, these very jeans, fit. And fit good. Now, they feel as if I was poured into them. I feel bloated, and full of gas, that I cant release. I dont know what to do about it. I just cant wait until this is over. Maybe just maybe I need to lay off soup for a while. I was just wondering because I only have to have 3 little things for my pre evaluation and Im already getting surgery so really its just a precaution, I only had to have an ekg, see the endocrine part at my hospital and do a excercise test (which I have to do every 4 months anyway because I have a lung condition.) I know others have to go through heaps of other stuff and I was wondering what those were? And if you really thought that some of them were necessary?

  28. For those of you who are strictly on the liquid diet without solids at all in the diet, have any of you experienced any stomach pain accompanied with gas. Lots of gas? This pain feels like a muscle strain, pulling, and then the dull ache afterwards, but it only happens when I have a lot of gas. Is this normal? Should I be concerned? I was thinking I had an ulcer. But how can that be? I dont eat foods with spice, or drink spice, I called my doc, they said to monitor it all day and I will. It doesnt hurt right now. I had a bowel movement, and everything seems ok now. So, I dont know whats going on. Kinda scares me a little. Just want to know if anyone else has experenced th…

So, I've decided I'm definitely having the surgery. Since I'm self pay and have done all of the necessary things, I just need to pick a date. Well, ever since I have decided to do this, I can't stop eating! I feel like I need to eat anything and everything that I can just in case I can't eat it after surgery. I know that this is only going to make things worse for the surgery, but I just can't seem to stop. I'm thinking of starting a structured plan until my date like Jenny Craig or something that will at least keep me from gaining any more! Just looking for some support...thanks!

I have read many posts on here to help me decide if this is what I want to do. So I went to my first consultation expecting to go through a lengthly process but was surprised to breeze right through and have my surgery scheduled for June 24th! I am ecstatic but also curious why it was so much easier than it seems to be for a lot of people. I am self pay so I get how that makes it quick (no insurance to deal with) and in perfect health but I did not have to go through any psychological or nutritional stuff like I see others have to. Anyone else have this experience? Thanks!! :wink2:

I'm planning on getting banded in Sept 2008. Between now and sept I'd like to focus my diet and exercise towards reducing my risk of complications rather than worry about my weight. I feel my time would be well spent if I focused on reducing the amount of poor circulation and Water retention in my legs( to reduce the risk of blood clots) Are there specific things that I could do? or should I just do a lot of generic diet and exercise stuff? thanks Tyler
