December Bandsters 2009

Recommended Posts

Dear Great, You need to up your Protein and drink 64 oz. of fluids a day. I, too, have had little restriction since the beginning. I started mushies early on. Some suggestions I have for you are: scarmmbled eggs, Cream of Wheat (add unflavored Protein Powder while steaming the milk), creamed Soups (again, add protein powder), a half of a banana, a baked yam (bake it a long time), SF pudding, Greek style yogart. These are just some suggestions. Don't eat too much and count your calories. Hope this helps. Best wishes!!!

Thanks bunches!!! I really don't care for the taste of the powdered protein, even the unflavored. However, I REALLY do not want to gain..so, off to GNC to get that protein. I will also up my Fluid intake. It is soooo good to have others along for support. YOu are a really great supporter illuminationlady!

Dear Thinme, I was told that they could not fill you until the fourth week because your stiches might break. I believe we are all in "Bandster Hell".:frown::thumbup:

My doctor will not do the first fill until 8 weeks....looks like I'm going to be in for another major challenge!! I thought the 14 day liquid diet was rough........

Mine waits 6 weeks, then does two fills back to back, with a week separating them. I think they said because the first one doesn't last long, not sure. But, anyway, he's the doc, I'm the patient, so I'll follow his lead. My first fill is Feb 2, and again on Feb 8.

Can you feel your port? Mine is very noticable under my left breast in the rib cage area.

I started mushies today and I am so excited. I made some chicken in the blender. I also blended some peas and added Unjury unflavored Protein powder to the blend, you can't even taste it! I had about 2 oz chicken, 2 oz peas for dinner which rendered about 19 g Protien. I'm drinking Natures Best Isopure throughout the day. I'm totally nervous as I'm going back to work in an hour! Here goes nothing!!!

Okay so here I am Day 7 of my journey. Not so bad, but still pretty tired and sluggish. I went out and did some light shopping on Christmas Eve and then enjoyed Christmas Day with family. I cheated a tiny bit ( I knew I would) nothing earth shattering. Im talking a tiny tiny bit (like the size of a small piece of lint) of red velvet cake on Christmas Day. I really don't think I was hungry, just craving, which I think pretty much goes away with a thick Protein Shake.

I am curious to see how I get through an additional week of full liquids. I still have sore tenderness at the port area, my stitches are itchy (I guess healing), still a little gassy, I am belching better but it hurts in the morning. I don't take the pain meds during the day and Tylenol does nothing for me. I took some ibuprofen for a few days and it made me feel like a different person, but I hear it's a no no:sad: So each day I wait to see what I can tolerate then see what my options are.

I am just taking it easy, I have another week off from work  so I will strategize then!

The support here is helpful and encouraging, it helps me understand things.

Maybe a little light cleaning today:glare:?? Maybe

You and I were banded on the same day and it sounds like you are feeling somewhat how I feel.

The severe gas pains that finally went away; the burping that hurts your chest and soreness at the inicision area (for me the largest incision below my right breast and the huge bump).

I too am taking this week off to recuperate. No way I can go back to work.

You are brave to go out I dont have the energy yet. I can barely walk very far! LOL

Hey everyone! New here and thought I'd say hello and introduce myself. I was banded on 12/16/09 and back to work on 12/21...by noon the first 2 days I was shaky in the knees and thought I'd die but things got easier on day three. The first week was fabulous with no desire to eat at all (which is a bizarre feeling for me!) but by week 2 I was starving to death on liquids so I cheated and moved to mushies....I'm doing okay but not as well as I'd like, not staying full long at all and taking much more to get full than I'd like. First fill on 1/12/10 and hopefully that wll all get a little bit easier! I am walking and hitting the Wii fit daily so, so far so good! I've loved reading your stories and feeling like there are other's out there with me on this journey. Good luck and keep up the good work!

Welcome aboard New Joy!!

I'm also to be banded on the 30th but I have to be at the hospital @ 0615. They did all my blood work and stuff today so I'm ready to go. First I've heard of a 3 day diet - mine has been 2 weeks.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I already have a food confession. I broke down and had a piece of pizza. Let me say is was yummy, but I feel guilty. I know we are going to have weak moments, but I wasn't expecting it so soon. I guess because I'm finally getting back into eating I couldn't help myself.

I can't wait for my first fill and maybe then I wont feel so bad when I wont be able to eat as much.

I've been having guilty moments also, it's harder than i thought it would be. Hopefully after my first fill I won't feel like picking anymore.

Looks like December bandsters 09 is coming to a close. yay!! we're all almost done!

quick question though, i dont know if its because im paranoid or what but ive grown more and more daring each day and have been feeling my stomach and trying to move gas i guess, and under my biggest incision, i cant seem to feel my port. however in my belly button there is a firm mass which im sure is a part of my band but im just hoping my port didnt magically slip down into there. can anyone else feel their port in the general vicinity of their largest incision??

Hi!

Its been two weeks since I was banded..and I just was able to feel my port today..there was more swelling before..and couldnt feel it..mine is at an upper one which is one of the bigger cuts the doctor did. Hope that will help! I have not lost much yet...was wondering if it happens more after your first fill..my fill appointment is Jan 14th!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
