December Bandsters 2009

Recommended Posts

Welcome aboard New Joy!!

I'm also to be banded on the 30th but I have to be at the hospital @ 0615. They did all my blood work and stuff today so I'm ready to go. First I've heard of a 3 day diet - mine has been 2 weeks.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I was only supposed to do the 2 day diet of liquids but when I decided to do a 3rd to flush out the junk I ate over thanksgiving.

I am hoping to get bumped up...they said if anyone cancels I can be moved into their slot... the anisetologist said I could have Water until 9am but I may do the midnight or 3am thing to be on the safe side.

This hasn't been too bad...I just had the Unjury chicken Soup for dinner with some lima Beans thrown in---it was pretty tasty.

I started mushies today and I am so excited. I made some chicken in the blender. I also blended some peas and added Unjury unflavored Protein Powder to the blend, you can't even taste it! I had about 2 oz chicken, 2 oz peas for dinner which rendered about 19 g Protien. I'm drinking Natures Best Isopure throughout the day. I'm totally nervous as I'm going back to work in an hour! Here goes nothing!!!

We were banded the same day - I can't start mushies for another week. So jealous (but happy for you ), I did call my doctor's office today to make sure and they confirmed it! Oh well, I am doing okay, not too much hunger, I bought some Carnations instant Breakfast and it is really good, I put all natural Peanut Butter in it with soy milk and extra Protein powder. Anyway I hope it goes well for you!

Yay, I'm not the only starving Bandster! I was banded on 12/14, made it through the liquids and mushies fine. I finally started solids, and I find that I am SO hungry! I have even gained back 2 lbs that I lost, though I wonder if that has anything to do with not eating any "real" food for a few weeks after the surgery. I'm really trying not to eat a lot even though I don't feel any restriction. Why don't they fill your band right away? I'm not having my first fill until 1/23, and I feel like I may gain all my weight back by then! Feeling slightly discouraged with this...

Don't be discouraged, I know how you feel, I was hungry coming out of surgery and confused! We have to remember that this is a time for healing that is the PRIORITY, once our bodies heal and everything sets as it should then we can begin the real journey. We don't want to mess that up right now by being discouraged or moving ahead to soon before our bodies are ready.

Like Grandma used to say "this too shall pass"

I understand why they call it bandster hell now. I hate that I can eat ANYTHING right now. I am trying my best to limit my intake, but it is so hard. I had a good restriction up until about a week after surgery. Now everything goes down with ease. I haven't lost anything for a week and it is very frustrating. I still have 3 more weeks till a fill and I can't wait.

I havent really had too many food restrictions because I could start mushy foods 2 days after surgery. And now I can get anything down as long as I chew really good.

Please tell me others are going through this!

Bamablondie1 - I didn't have that, but I have heard a lot of people talk about how they did. It actually seems kind of common.

Tracy, I'm in hell with you! I was banded on 12/14 and don't have my first fill until 1/23! I have been able to eat anything and everything, though I am really trying to be careful and keep a journal. I've read many other posts here from people who say they went through the same thing and you need to just hang in there until your first fill. It is SO frustrating to see the scale go up instead of down, I know. Hang in there...

Hi all! I was just banded on December 23, 2009 and thought I would join in the conversation. It has been almost one week since my surgery and am feeling pretty good considering the timing and all. Am still in the full liquid stage, but my doctor says I can start with the mushies tomorrow. Any great ideas for the first few things to try?

Welcome Christie, New Joy and Pam!!!

Yesterday was my two week check up. Everything went well! I can now start transitioning to real food!!! Yeah!!! I'm to start with mushies. Things like cottage cheese, refried Beans, a half of a banana, scrammbled eggs, Greek style yogart were all suggested. Then I am to start trying real food. By the time of my first fill I am supposed to have tried all foods. I am to try one new food at a time. My class was 2 and half hours long followed by my check up. Basically my doc gave me the green light to try anything, but to transition my new stomach slowly and I got two thumbs up!!!

Great Expectation--you are very sweet!!! Thank you. Hugs to you!!!:thumbup::smile:

Blended/pureed Soups work really well for the mushy week, and they are very filling. I tried pureed veggie Soup, split pea soup, or very mushy egg salad. I was so sick of the Protein Shakes and broths that ANYTHING was better! Good luck!

hahaha I haven't talked to the doc to see how big it was. I kinda suspected that I had one b/c anytime that I ate anything of spice - whew! But I really think my hernia repair is causing me more pain than the band/port. Did you experience this?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
