September Bandsters

dovie6523: You've gotten great advice here. And it sounds like you're taking it to heart. If I eat too few calories, I stop losing also. There's a nice balance that I think I'm finally onto.

It is a pain to have to do the planning and preparation of real food, but my doc said (like lifelongband's did) that once you're past the first weeks post-op, we should not be having shakes. They want us to eat and process real food with real Fiber. We have to stay healthy if we want the band to do its' job.

If you do your grocery shopping with 3 good meals a day and s/f, f/f Snacks in mind, it will be much easier. At least it has been for me.

Good luck - you can get the hang of it and when you do, you'll get the results you're looking for.

M.O.M. I am own 6 lbs from last week for a total of -3 for the challengs. I have finally been able to start walking on my treadmill. I was just too tired to do anything the first 3 weeks after surgery. I walked a lot in D.C. with the kids and when we got home I started walking on the treadmill every morning right after I get up and b4 I get ready for work. I think that has really helped. AND (I am so excited and scared...I hate pain) I get my first fill Thursday. Wish me luck.......Katt

P.S. You guys are great!!!!!

Hello all, I am down 3 pounds this week. I have been thinking about how much we should eat... I too ate to little. I was actually afraid to eat or afraid that I would start to eat too much. But (As I have mentioned before) I just didn't feel well. My insides hurt and I was so tired all the time. I am sure that some of you have been on Jenny Craig. I love Jenny Craig because I don't have to think, they just tell me what to eat. I actually have been on it 4-5 times. But the rambling point is I ate 1,500 calories and lost 2-3 pounds a week. So why am I trying skrimping (sp) by on 600-800. So this week I ate more. of course I started eating real food and that really made the difference. But I was at a meeting and they had treats. I ate one of those little bags of teddy grahams. It didn't kill my weight loss and I didn't have to try and be a marter. well, enough carrying on, I have some school work to do. Good luck to all.

Had my first fill today, hurt more than I thought it would. Doc had a hard time getting my port...ouch. I have to be on soft food today and tomorrow. I go back in 2 weeks to see if I need more saline in. Hope everything goes well.

It's nice to read about the September bandsters. Somehow, I didn't get in on this; but I'd like too! I'm trying to make it to 200 pounds by Christmas. I have 18 pounds to! I better increase my exercise! I have felt no restriction and am a little apprehensive about getting a fill. I don't want to PB or have the slimes! YUK! At first, I was very hungry, but now I seem to be in a routine and I'm not even craving sugar. That is really a miracle. Good luck to everyone. I will try and post my losses on Mondays.

Ok so Im pre fill. Ive been on solids for 1-2 weeks. Soft foods are no problem. I almost hate to eat real food- especially if others are around!! I am still having trouble off and on SLOWING down with eating. If I missed a meal I tend to do worse. If I rush, or dont chew well enough I get this painful mid sternum just above xyphoid. It does pass, and yes Ive cheated and drank to relieve the pain. Anyone else with this and am I correct that chewing and slowing down is causing this?? I FEAR if I dont slow down , chew chew chew this is the precursor to PBing.

Gonnabe: Doc said that he gave me the baby spoon to actually use - not just as a reminder to take small bites. He says that one day I will get in a hurry and take a bite and not chew and have the mid-sternum pain you discribed. He said it takes time for it to work itself out and that drinking something is probably the worst thing you can do. I have only had the problem once and it passed quickly but scared me enough that I'm trying to be very careful.

I got my first fill on Tues. I feel just a tiny bit of restriction. Nothing like I felt when I had the swelling from surgery restriction. I am still hungry but not quite as hungry as before the fill - or is it that I'm afraid to eat too much? I put myself on a soft diet for the past couple of days. He only told me I should take it easy and didn't tell me specifically what not to eat.

The lidocaine shot hurt more than I thought it would, but didn't last long and my insides gurgled a lot when he was locating the "sweet spot" in my port. But it all only took about 3 minutes and was totally bearable. I was a little sore last night and felt tired, but today has been just fine. I am a little disappointed that I don't feel more restriction. Guess I will be looking forward to the next one before long. He didn't tell me how long between fills.

When do you get your first fill?

Gonnabe: When do you get your first fill?

Not for 2 more weeks, and not then if im losing- which im not.

Motivation to slow down and use my toddler ware. At home Im fine, its out and eating with a group that Im having trouble slowing down.

So far I haven't had the experience of dining out with friends. Probably would be embarrassing to use my toddler ware there, so I might get myself in trouble too.

The surgical assistant to my doc noticed my weight loss and acted like maybe I wasn't ready to have the fill either. But I assured her that I was definitely having trouble staying on the LB eating plan. So we went ahead with the fill.

I don't actually understand their thinking on that. Do you?

BJean, I think I am going to go and buy a baby spoon.

I have made the mistake and eaten too big of a bite and the pain I mean is terrible not to mention the panic of maybe getting sick.

Also I went for my fill on the 20th and he told me to come and see him in 5 weeks.

I am exactly like you in this! I do understand. Trust me if you don't slow down and chew, you will PB, tuna isnt so good the second time.

Today I am going to throw my scales out the window!!!!! The thing has a mind of its own. I think when I'm sleeping it has a conversation with the toilet and scoots in my beedroom beside the bed so it's the first thing I see in the morning and I have no choice but to step on it. I have got to stay off the dang thing. It's calling me everytime I walk by the bathroom!!! I know there is no way in heaven that I can gain 4 lbs and lose 4.5 in one day. Digital scales suck!!!!!

MOM-

I haven't lost anything this week. Sorry I didn't post it yesterday, I was at the hospital seeing my niece right after work and then came home and went to bed.

Thanks again for doing all of the tracking for us, we all appreciate it very much!!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
