POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by AimeeMcGregor,

Hi all, I had bypass on Feb 19 and my BP really seemed to correct itself and even go a little low for a couple months but now, out of nowhere, it is super high again. I'm still losing so not sure what is causing it but I started taking my pre-surgery bp meds again. I don't need a stroke at 45.

  2. Started by Gypsy77,

So, I am one month after my Bypass and I am getting my exercise in and my darn protein shakes, blah, but I’m not losing weight like I should. I expected the weight loss to be fast and just drop off of me. My surgeon keeps telling me you are right where you need to be, you are right in the normal range. I hear others talk and they are like losing rapidly and I’m like why aren’t I?! What am I doing wrong? Anyone else know how this feels?

  3. Started by SpartanMaker,

So I'm a little more than 2 years out and for probably the last 6-8 weeks, I've gotten to where I just don't really enjoy eating most things. I'd say 90% of what I'm eating, I eat because I know I need to eat, not because I particularly enjoy it. Most things just taste off somehow to me, including things I used to really enjoy. I'm wondering if any other folks had anything similar happen? I will preface this by saying there's a possibility this is medication related, as I think I made a change to my meds about that same time. I'm investigating that separately.

Im okay and will be just wonder if anyone else has experienced this. Im one year post op! Super grateful. 139lbs! God is good! However, im concerned. I know hormonal changes are inevitable. I use to have anxiety 12 years ago. My grandma passed 7 months ago and some life happend and it is back with a vegenance. From may-june ive been having insomnia and anxiety, and its been intense. It has calmed down but its been hard. I never considered that the intense change in my body could be a factor until tonight. Even the way my body responds to an attack is intense. Its different from when i was 217. Now at 139? Its alot. But im pressing through has it levels out everyday. Hopin…

  5. Hello! My case is bit unusual from those I read here. I made a gastric sleeve surgery back in October 2023 (20 months ago) when I was 23 y.o., my weight was 300 lbs back then. In a month after surgery there was another surgery (my surgeon made a mistake which caused an abscess) and another surgery then too. They also cut 10cm of my intestines. It turns out that in 4 months after the first surgery, I got pregnant with long-awaited child. It is important to note that I made a surgery just to have an opportunity of having a baby, I was comfortable with my previous high weight. Pregnancy went good, without any complications and we born a healthy child who is 8 mon…

  6. Hey everyone! are you guys documenting your journey on any social media like TikTok, instagram, facebook, etc?

  7. Started by VGRaluca,

Hi everyone, I had my gastric sleeve surgery on February 3rd, 2022. My lowest weight after surgery was around 59 kg, but now I’m back to 71 kg and I honestly feel stuck and frustrated. I feel like I’m doing everything I can, but nothing really works. I go to the gym, but I feel like it just builds up more muscle on my legs instead of helping me slim down — and that’s the opposite of what I want. I try to eat small portions, but sometimes I snack too much or drink calories without realizing it. I’m worried my sleeve has stretched or that I’ve slipped back into bad habits. If you’ve been in my shoes, what helped you get back on track after some weight regain?…

  8. I was absolutely starving during the night and felt so dizzy and lightheaded with it so I made a poached egg and absolutely devoured it. Now im worried as I should still be on liquid diet. But im really struggling. I didn't even get the full feeling after eating this egg either. What the hell is wrong with me?! ? Why on earth am I so hungry? I'm only ten days post op. Why don't I get that 'full' signal like everyone else?

  9. Started by AmberFL,

I need some new fresh meal prep Ideas! My goal is to hit a minimum of 160g protein and 1700 calories. Anyone have some good breakfast and lunch ideas for a gal who works in an office? Hit me with some recipes!

  10. Started by AmberFL,

I post here for advice, encouragement and always get such uplifting/helpful comments. I just need this to get out to my bari-fam! I am 15months post op. I have done well, got down to my goal weight fairly quickly, made leaps on my fitness journey and just pretty proud of how far I have come. Lately, body dysmorphia is really rearing its ugly head and I am not dealing with it well. I am punishing myself with binge eating...All of April has just sucked a$$ for me. I am maintaining, continuing my workouts, my days are great then I go home at night, I grab a few chips, leads to some sweets, leads to some bread and butter, ect....do I eat a ton of it? No but I don't feel…

  11. Started by Claire D,

Hi lovelies, I hope you’re all doing well? You were all so supportive with the question I asked a few weeks ago that I thought I would come here and see if you have any advice for me now! As of tomorrow I am eight weeks out from the gastric bypass procedure. I have lost quite a bit of weight (2 stone) which I’m absolutely delighted about (and people are starting to notice which has been a really good feeling). However, I must have THE most stubborn self sabotaging streak because I have started to drink alcohol again (and not just on special occasions) as well as not following the food rules and not exercising. I can’t understand why I’m being like this because my famil…

  12. Long post alert, just venting and catching up after so much time away... TLDR, I'm getting an arm lift. I want to hear from other people who got it and how it changed their body/body image, recovery, success stories, and whatever else you want to share! Wow, I haven't posted in a while. This forum got me through some dark times when I had my gastric bypass both before and after. I am posting today because I am FINALLY getting some plastics done. I have been waiting a while because I wanted to maintain my weight. I just turned 30, I'm not getting any younger and I've been doing excellent maintaining my weight loss so I finally scheduled a brachioplasty to start…

  13. Hi I am 4 weeks post op and had bloodwork yesterday. My regular results were normal but my metabolic panel was high in some areas (Bun Creatinine) was really high. I know that has to do with liver and kidneys. I am wondering if it is because I drink mostly no sugar gatorade and bone broth besides Protein shakes and maybe A cup of water a day. My Chart results. Haven’t spoken to Doctor. Has anyone else experienced this ?

  14. Started by Vicsleeve,

Hello, It’s been a week since i went through a gastric sleeve surgery and I use cannabis oils to help with other health issues, however, sometimes friends come over and i would end up vaping a little bit and now idk if its safe to vape after the surgery.

How does this work because I had it out with my surgeons office the insurance. I called my insurance to see if my surgeon submitted the info for the appeal for the peer to peer. They informed me that my surgeon didn't send the info in time and that they tried calling numerous times and offered them a appeal process. I called the surgeon office and they stated they never heard from th insurance and that they sent the data. Also the surgeon office said that the peer to peer got canceled by the insurance because that had already denied the surgery so now I am highly upset getting the run around. Lastly called insurance back to explain what the of…

I think I can count this as NSV! So I am pretty certain my body is done losing weight and I am going to stay at a healthy 165-170lbs, I am cleared to exercise again (i.e walking, hiking, stationary bike, lower body weights). I am back to working out 6 days a week with 3 of those days being strength training/cardio. I have never been in this spot where I am just maintaining, meal prepping is a thing that I do and I don't dread it, working out is just part of my day, not binging and just being able to eat sweets in moderation or if I go crazy then the next day I just get back on track and don't slip. Is this what regular, never been obese people live and feel?! …

Well here’s one I never thought I’d post. I just found out I’m pregnant 11 months post op. (Happy) accident (failed BC) But I’m really worried about how it’ll affect me weight wise, I was doing so well I’ve hit my goal and was 3kg away from hitting the goal I’d set for my 1 year post up next month Anyone been through this ? How did you navigate pregnancy after a sleeve ?

  19. Started by ShoppGirl,

OK, so post surgery I have a scar under my belly button that was hard, but the nurse practitioner said it was just because my surgery was a revision and they use that same spot twice. Well now the scar part feels loose, but if I put my finger inside my belly button, I can still feel something hard underneath there. My husband had me feel his and it’s hard too but different. He says that’s just how my belly button feels without all the blubber on top of it, but I don’t know. I don’t remember ever feeling that when I was thin. Has anyone had an umbilical hernia? Is that something that could be caused by the surgery? Am I describing anything close to that? ? I plan to ask th…

Hi guys I just thought I would check in with you all and tell you of my progress, trials and tribulations! I'm nearly 6 weeks post-op and I am still adjusting to my new life. I am doing very well all things considered, except that one of my surgical sites reopened and is not healing properly, don't worry I am having medical support from the doctor and nurse, I just feel a bit down with it to be honest. I'm type 2 diabetic and my glucose levels have stabilized which is awesome! I lost 2 stone 1lb in just under a month which is amazing, I did stay the same last week which was disappointing but I guess my body needs time to catch up! I'm struggling mental…

  21. Hi guys, I'm feeling a bit low so I thought I would reach out, everyone seems so friendly here. I had sleeve surgery nearly 6 weeks ago and one of the surgical sites just wont heal. They were all fine, scabbed over and looking great until two weeks ago when they starting weeping. When this happened I covered them up with an antiseptic cream and saw the doctor who prescribed antibiotics for an infection I had. The scab came off on one of them along with the stitches leaving a sizeable hole which scared me to death! Now this hole won't seem to heal. It is about as 1cm deep and 1.5 cm wide. The nurse is packing and dressing it twice a week, but it's really g…

  23. Started by buildabetteranna,

Hey guys! Thanks for taking your time to read and answer I appreciate it. I had Gastric Sleeve last Friday the 14th. I have had a few moments where it felt like I was having low blood sugar, because I was/am prediabetic. It will go away even eating a sugar free popsicle will make it better. My bf told me it's not my blood sugar cus sugar free wont fix that. I have just had a handful of moments that felt like i would pass out if i didn't get something in me. Is that normal? I get in all my fluids and then some, ate my 2ox 3 x a day liquid diet as well. I was getting about 40 grams of protein a day which was all I could really fit in in three meals of 2oz lol. Today I am st…

  24. Pardon my ignorance! I had gastric Bypass on January 15th. I had mine done due to gastroparesis not for weight loss. I weighed on average 250lbs before surgery. As of now I'm at 220lbs. Yes I have lost nearly 30lbs. Most of my weight loss was right at first and have hit two major plateaus after surgery. I consume little amount of calories. I mainly have protein shakes which consist of Premier Protein or Redcon1 MRE. I eat ground proteins like lean beef or turkey. I am very strict on my diet. I work out daily and put in at least two hours. I would thought my progress would have been greater. I'm trying to lose weight before I return to work and build up my strength. I feel…

Hi guys I was sleeved 2 weeks ago and am due to go onto pureed foods tomorrow. MY main concern is how I am going to get the protein in as I know I will only be able to manage a few mouthfuls at first. Do you have any tips? I have ordered some protein flavoured water power and I am fed up with protein shakes now! I have to be careful what I have because I have suffered with digestive issues and have had to drink more to keep hydrated! Did you have problems with your digestion after surgery, not constipation though Any help would be gratefully received. Thank you!

Hi guys, I had my Sleeve 9 days ago, and am averaging 430 cals per day. Trying to get my 2 litres of water, but mostly 1.5 or so. Still on liquid diet, having one shake in the morning and 2 x 125ml (half cup) serves of home made soup with protein powder for lunch/dinner. At first the weight was falling off at .5kg (1lb) or more a day. but the last 3 days it hasn't dropped, in fact this morning it was 200 gm (half lb) up. Not panicking, I know that there will be stalls, but I didn't think at this early stage ? I also know I probs shouldn't weigh everyday, but I *have* to ? Today I thought I might try to up the cal intake a bit and get a bit more steps …

  28. Started by Bypass2Freedom,

SO I had the wonderful experience of having my IUD (hormonal coil), removed & replaced yesterday. Knowing how painful it was being fitted the first time, and having not experienced having it replaced before, I decided to take 2 30mg codeine/500mg paracetamol tablets, as pain relief for women during such procedures really is just forgotten about. I'd eaten some protein stick things too. Pre-surgery I'd taken these tablets fine, no side effects, but OMFG, as I was sitting in the waiting area before my procedure it hit me like a brick **** house. I was sweating, nauseous, my stomach was cramping and pain was radiating into my back, I felt spacy and w…

How beneficial are Protein and Multivitamins to losing weight? I’m not doing either at the moment and I’m noticing that I’m not losing any weight

  31. Started by Jaxxamillion,

I am having a hard time with this surgery. I’ve been bigger all 29 years of my life but I finally decided to make a change Jan 8 2024. I had the gastric sleeve surgery done… Since then I don’t like the taste of anything that I use to like. I can’t even stomach the smell of certain food, it makes me literally nauseous. I’m not use to how slow I have to drink water now so when I swallow too much, it make my chest hurt terribly. I always feel nauseous 24/7 for not reason at all. Plus, I’m not losing anything. I still look and feel overweight. I deal with depression and other mental illnesses so I may be beating myself up but I guess I expected differently.

  32. Started by T O P,

I don't mean to annoy anyone but my question is ,I am on a 800 calorie diet and I find it very hard to stay on this diet no because I am hungry but because everything now is loaded with calories. So I am puzzled and wondering is 800 calories a day too much or too little. Dietician says anything over 800 will cause weight gain and disrupt the process with my shots versus other doctors are like 800 is nothing. I am confused.

  33. The title pretty much sums it up. I keep thinking about the workouts I need to do, the walks I need to take, the beginners pilates and yoga I need to start....and I honestly just don't feel like it. I WANT to do it and I don't feel like it at the same time. I have no idea how that works exactly, but here we are. My husband thinks it might be a bit of depression because I started a GoFundMe to raise the funds I need to complete my certifications to move up at work and get better pay. I've asked everyone I know to please share it where they can (I have NOT asked anyone I personally know to donate, but the more it's shared, the better the chances of hitting the goal) bu…

I am about 18 months post gastric bypass surgery. For about the last three months I have developed a condition where one or both of my eyes sting between 5 and 7 pm each evening for a period of about five minutes. At first, I thought perhaps I had something on my hands and I had touched my eyes and it had caused them to sting, however it happens without touching my eyes. It's the same kind of sensation as having sweat in your eyes. However, I'm not sweating. One thing that I have noticed is that in the evenings if I touch my forehead my skin feels very oily. So I do wonder if perhaps my eyelids could also be getting oily and therefore getting the oil onto my eye…

I had MGB a week ago and all and all I feel good BUT.. when I go to sit up from laying down, stand up or even sit up straight all the way it burns about 2 inches to the left of my belly button. BAD. It feels like something is going to rip apart. I don’t have any incisions there either. Has anyone else experienced this? TIA

I am really struggling with tracking my food. I have tried many different trackers, both digital and paper but I just can’t seem to stick to it. I have ADHD, time blindness and object impermanence (out of sight out of mind). The crazy thing is that even when I eat, I do not think “Oh I need to write this down” never. It just doesn’t occur to me. I recently switched to clear acrylic tumblers because I still wasn’t meeting my water goals. I bought (2) 40 ounce tumblers so I only have to refill it once. This has been working for me. The goal is 64 ounces of water per day so if I don’t completely finish the refill as long as I get below 1/2 on the second round I…

Hello! My surgery was September 9th, 2024, and I am still currently drinking one protein shake per day (Fairlife - 30 grams). I am wondering when I should give this up? It's not like I can't stand the drink, I actually like it still after all this time surprisingly. It's just that they are so darn expensive and kind of a pain in the rear to get (my mom orders from Sam's for me to save some $). I feel it's become a part of my normal daily routine but when did everyone else give them up?? It's been almost 5 months now.

Since surgery I've had pain in my hips, knees, wrists and back, especially if these joints remain immobile for awhile such as during sleeping. Its so painful it wakes me up and I dread moving. I've also started getting sharp pain for no reason in my right arm pit area (now gone but moved) tricep (rt) thighs and now hypersensitivity on my left outer thigh on the skin. Its so sensitive clothing annoys it, its kind of a constant numb feeling. The sharp pain started in the right arm pit area and I thought it was shingles but I had no rash. I am looking for people who have had the shoulder pain from Hernia repair. This is not gas ,but a pain associated with the stitches taken in the diaphragm. It has been awful the last couple of days. I know when people have had problems they post them. I would like to find people who have had this problem and they had it resolve. How long did it take? I am 7 day post surgery and it feels like I have a pinched nerve.

The girl on the left was tired, not taking care of herself, moody, unhealthy, and today I celebrate being healthy, happy, health and fitness! What a crazy ride it has been but its been the best ride. I look forward to my future and how that looks for my family and I. There has been ups and downs but so worth it! If you get discouraged, don't because I promise it the end you will be so glad you did not give up. From a size 20/22 pants, 2/3x top to a size 4 pants and S/M tops

I consider 55 lbs weight loss to be slow weight loss after 10 months. And to mention I’ve been going to the gym for the pass 6 months and average 3 hours weekly work out time. Not just regular gym work out… I joined orange theory and also workout classes in hot sauna room. A lot of HIIT workouts. The past 3-4 months I’ve been struggling to loss more. I would loss 3 lbs and plateau for a month and then gain back 3-4 lbs within a few days… it’s been this cycle for a while now. I have to adm…

  45. I was wondering if any one else has this problem. I have always had a flat butt but it is way worse now and all my pants slide down in the back. Regular button fly pants and shorts are the worst because I can't get them to stop. My belly is extremely big so the pants are very loose in the back, even at the waist but they fit or are tight in the front. I know I could do a belt but that woudln't be comfortable with my big belly right now. Has anyone ever used anything to pinch the material in back up? I am not even sure if I can find a belt to fit me, it has been so long since anyone has. I am afraid that the best would just cinch the front more and dig into my skin…

And a lot of it is that I have to take my time with them and I can't just down them quickly like I used to. So far I have tried: -All of the fairlifes. These used to be my absolute fav.
