POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by Dchonlee,

It’s crazy how youll set a goal and then when you make it there you want to go even lower. My goal has been 160 but now I’m 159 and I think I wanna go to 150 lol this is such a journey.

  2. Started by Bariatric bint,

Hi all I’ve had to take a laxative as it’s been over a week since I went to the toilet. This painfully moved everything along. Today I passed a stool with blood in it. Not too much but enough to scare me. I’ve obviously had stomach surgery but this wasn’t mentioned. Is it normal? My sleeve was 6 days ago. My last bowel movement before laxatives was 8 days ago. Tia

Question not to be nasty but what were your BMs like post sleeve?

  4. Ok...so...when you have a food allergy, even a "mild" one, take it seriously. I'm allergic to peanuts and shellfish. With shellfish, it's literally life and death. I can't even be in the room when it's being cooked because the proteins in the air set me off. It's really that bad. I go into anaphylactic shock and I was told if it happens 1 or 2 more times, I could very likely die. So...no shellfish, which breaks my heart because me an crab legs...omg. Love affair for the ages. But peanuts.....that's not bad like shellfish. My mistake was comparing it to the shellfish. I was told my shellfish allergy is the worst case my doctor has ever seen. So comparing anything to i…

Pic on top...my senior year of high school (prom) when I was 17. Pic on bottom...a couple of weeks ago at age 46. Face is older, but body is pretty close. Just sayin.....??

  6. Just finished a Half Marathon in ~2:10. Not too shabby for an old man that had a total knee replacement and open heart surgery, and that used to weight >330 lbs a couple of years ago. That's all, thanks for indulging me! ?

So I've been at my goal weight, but I'm still losing weight. I'm trying my best to maintain it and it's becoming difficult to do so. How do I healthily stay at the weight I'm at? I've tried the steps I found online like having more smaller meals throughout the day or adding more calories, but I don't have the appetite to do so and clearly can't eat as much as I used to due to the surgery. Would high protein foods work despite it being low in calories? Has anyone else run into this unexpected predicament? Or know of some good advice?

  8. Started by DinoMama3,

Hi all! I’m entering my 2nd week after gastric bypass and generally feeling pretty good (knock on wood!). The only thing I’m really missing— like, making me sad, missing— is coffee. I keep trying decaf but I can’t do the taste and all I want is a sugar free pumpkin cold brew cold foam. So my question is… how bad would it be to get one? I know I could only do maybe 3 or 4 sips of it but man, I want it. Thoughts? Experiences? Thanks in advance!

  9. Started by AmberFL,

Seeing this side by side literally made me tear up. I was 297, unhappy with how I felt every morning, my relationship with food was terrible, drinking to excess, and just not feeling like the best mom and partner I could be. 1/24/24 I took back my life!! I decided that I am worthy of being healthy, and my family deserved to have me around and not just existing but living the best lives with them. I don't want to brag but damn it I am going to! I am so proud of this progress. I honestly cannot believe that those pictures are the same people!

  10. Started by Lilia_90,

I was going through my album, and while trying to lose weight I had favourited a few of my pictures for inspiration to get back to what I was. I was in the best shape after having my first child, see below photos from (2016/2017). My highest weight at 90 kgs/198 lbs (a few days before my VSG in December 2023) My post-op journey has all been about restriction and not being able to eat enough. It took me time to slowly build my stamina and muscle tone back. I have definition in my abs and my legs and arms are toned. I am 13 kilos/29 lbs lighter than my “before” fit (but it doesn't much show because muscles ha!), I am at an all time low in terms of w…

I am 5 weeks and was just curious to what other type of foods we can eat besides what’s on the booklet…. I been craving chicken soup so bad but was told I can’t have the noodles yet just the broth…. I’ve seen other blend it but don’t want to do something that will harm me… any suggestions

  12. Started by Rashi,

Finally cleared for soft foods, increased physical/sexual activity and massage. Oh it's a good day! Was able go handle half a scrambled egg and 2oz of mashed pinto beans. Was so nervous they'd taste bad or make me nauseous. So far, only my Vanilla protein shake that I've loved for a few years; now tastes like syrup. Has anyone "lost" the ability to enjoy their favorites since having surgery? And if so, has it changed ?

  13. Started by Dchonlee,

For someone like me who cannot eat much anymore, obviously lol I am so hungry on my cycle. It’s crazy.

  14. Started by Dchonlee,

Hi family, im 163. Just documenting!

  15. Hi all. Im 7 weeks post op as of today. I’m curious if anyone has hired an independent bariatric dietician… in other words, someone outside of your surgeon’s office to support you? I am not really satisfied with the level of support that I am getting from my surgeon’s office. I’d like at least a weekly or bi-weekly check in with someone and to discuss goals and things I can work towards. When I asked my surgeon’s office at my last follow up appointment if I was where I should be weight loss wise, I didn’t really get much of an answer. I asked where I should be at my three month follow-up and she couldn’t find her chart. So I never got an answer. I live in an area …

  16. Started by Rashi,

So yesterday, I was finally able to get down a cup of decaf coffee, cup of yogurt and a full protein shake (along with sipping my water). I wanted the coffee for sure, the yogurt was purposeful though I didn't really want it and finishing the shake in a day was surprising. However, today I can't help but wonder was that success the beginning of now having an "appetite"? Because did I just have some phantom hunger urge? I mean what is an appetite now? Am I doing too much? Today, coffee down, yogurt down about 2 hours later and I actually wanted it, and now I'm sipping my Butternut Squash soup that I truly did want ?. Curious what are my true appetite/hunger signals will …

This is a total show off/humble brag/flaunting it post, disclaimer delivered! So had wedding that I was looking forward to (was a total wedding hater before…for the reasons most of us are familiar with) and I had ordered this super tight dress size XS (UK size 0) and was nervous it won’t fit. Well it fit like a glove (did struggle to zip in my boobs since they’re the only part that aren’t a size 0 thank goodness). It’s so weird how much I enjoyed this wedding and danced till I couldn’t feel my feet whereas I would sit on my bum and feel miserable before (past 5 years only). Some visual proof:

Sooo I am over 8.5 months post-op, and want to ask the veterans what their thoughts are on carbonation? I was a big diet soda and coffee drinker pre WLS and I knew I would never cut coffee out and I've had it since the second week post WLS with no issues, but carbonated drinks is a different story. My surgeon has encouraged me to eat anything and everything except for diet soda. He has been adamant that I don' take it up again. Another friend who's had WLS and has lost and maintained her weight loss and eats everything has told me that she occasionally drinks diet soda but only started having it 2 years post op and advised against it at this point for me. My bro…

Okay so this may be premature but I ordered a pair of track pants which is pretty much what I live in for around the house in a XL (was a 2X) and instead of being tight in the waist they are okay there but tight in the hips. They are a different cut since they are all the skinny legs now so they are actually very fitted allover and maybe they just run smaller in the hips but now that I’m looking for that my thighs and hip area do look disproportionately large. I want to lose a little more before I wear them anyways but it’s just odd that it used to be my waist where things were snug and now it’s the hips. Wonder how many times my shape will change on the way down. Did any…

Feel a weird spasm not painful just uncomfortable like indigestion in lower stomach since yesterday 3 months post sleeve No other symptoms but concerned as new symptom Any idea? Could it be indigestion or should I be concerned Surgeon will take ages to respond

  27. Ok what??? HOW??? I was staying between 177-179 for the last few weeks so I thought I was FINALLY at the place my body was setting at. Apparently not!!! I've even increased how often I eat. But it seems like the more I eat, the more I lose. The less I eat, that's when my weight stays pretty much the same. And that seems pretty messed up to me. So I have to starve myself to STOP losing weight but if I eat well I'll keep going lower??? What??? I don't WANT to go lower. I was supposed to stop at 190!! Make it make sense, cuz the math ain't mathin. Just had blood work done. Other than being anemic (thanks lupus!!) everything was normal, including my thyroid. My nutrition…

  30. So, had my surgery on Thursday, spent the night in the hospital and came home Friday after noon (had a little ralph after the liquid vitamin gave me insta heartburn, but felt better after that.) . I'm sore, it hurts to breathe deep, and sipping water doesn't kill my thirst. How big is a sip? Will I always have to sip or just until healed? Popsicles are nice.

So after my post last week where I was .4 away from my goal, I am not 1.2lb UNDER my goal! So I am working on my macros to see what caloric threshold I should hit to stay around the same. Last week I was eating around 1100-1200calories and I still lost weight. Gonna stay around the 1200-1300 mark. Any input on this aspect would be great! I’m still working out 6 days a week (been an addiction lol) Last week my sisters, mom and I had a spa day, laid by the pool with drinks after our massages and I couldn’t believe the difference in how I looked between the summers! The drink in my hand is coconut mojito mocktail that was delicious but too sugary I had a couple sip…

  32. Started by ShoppGirl,

I had a revision surgery from sleeve to SADI a week ago today and I am a little concerned about how fast I am losing. Between the pre op diet and now I have lost 26 pounds. I think 14 pounds Pre Surgery and 12 this week. What’s odd is that the surgeon warned me that with it being a revision my loss would be quite a bit slower than with a virgin surgery and I don’t think I lost quite this fast with my sleeve. Obviously I want to lose And the faster the better so long as it’s still healthy. I have my first post op tomorrow and I plan to ask the NP but I am just curious to hear what others here have experienced. Maybe I’m worrying too soon. It could be that everyon…

  33. I had my one year check up with my bariatric surgeon yesterday, labs were all perfect, I was told I'm 20 percentage points down in my BMI and the surgeon said I'm exactly what the program hopes for in outcomes...etc. Etc... My questions to the doctor were the following: 1. When do I quit aching / feeling pain in my hips, shoulders and elbows I've heard so much about after losing weight?! He asked if I had this pain beforehand, I told him no its all since surgery. 2. I also asked about occasional pain that feels like gallbladder pain now (its been removed) asking if it could be a stone in my biliary tract? He said not likely its probably just "phantom pain."…

  34. Hello all! After seeing all the responses on the post topic " What do you wish you should of done before surgery" it got me wondering what Do You Have Planned or What have you done since having had your surgery that you used to reward yourself, or thought you'd never be able to do prior to surgery that either you can now or have added to your will do list that you thought "if only"....? I'm curious about what we've put off doing beforehand or what you couldn't do before losing the weight and have added it to your " bucket list". Life is short and I want to read how you're going to enjoy it now! I'm looking for inspiration. I look forward to living vicariously th…

Just wanted to share how yummy cava is!!!! Lol

  36. Hi, Bari Buddies, I am 6 days post op and doing really well. I have had no nausea at all, and pain is very manageable. I am able to drink all the water I need to and the full liquids (I'm on them until day 14) are going great. And that's the thing. I double-checked my information from the clinic and I am supposed to be having up to a half-cup at a time 5 times a day. I have been having too much (horribly worried to find I'm already overeating right after my gastric bypass). Like this morning I had a half-cup of apple sauce with protein powder and a protein drink. I now realize those should've been 2 different meals. I do get some extra tenderness in my upper abd…

curious. This is my 3rd menstruation since my surgery and .. i am ALWAYS HUNGRY. Like ive been eating more than usual and im always hungry on this period. Is this normal? Lol

  38. Started by Fars,

Post sleeve, 2 months later there are days when water is impossible to have. Cold, hot, flavored otherwise makes me nauseous other days it’s fine Is that normal? What to do?

  39. Started by ShoppGirl,

I believe it was day 4 that my dr started me on twice a day stool softener then on day 6 I had my first movement so I went to once a day. Currently it’s day 8 and I am still having a loose movement each morning. I’ve been sticking with the one a day worried about the pain straining if it firms up too much but I guess I gotta stop taking it eventually? Any advice as to when it’s time to stop?? Does it hurt to take it for a couple of weeks? Or mess up your system to where you actually need it or anything.

I have always been a whole milk user. I can't say drinker cause before surgery I would rarely drink milk. Since the surgery I have been using it to make my protein shakes and overnight oats. In the last week I have been having tummy issues after drinking my shake or having my oats. Has anybody else developed an issue with milk after surgery. Now I need to figure out what to use instead of whole milk for my shake and oats. I am hoping this will be an easy fix.

I am officially 9lbs away from my goal!!!!!!!!! I have not been 160 since middle school. This really made my day! 160 is my goal weight though i think ill probably go to 150. Either way, to see this on the scale really blew me away

  42. Started by ShoppGirl,

Tomorrow will be day 7 post op and I seem to be fine with waking around the house. It’s just getting up and down that cause me pain. That and reaching I just learned while playing cards. I have a pretty light vacuum (a cordless Dyson) and I’m wondering if I would be crazy to attempt it. Ironic because I would probably tell anyone else to let it go but it’s really bugging me. Maybe I should just ask my hubby to do it. Although I’m fairly sure after all these years that he is allergic. We don’t have traditional gender roles by any means but vacuuming has always seemed to be mine. Anyways, has anyone else done it or asked their Dr if it’s okay at a week out. My instructions …

  43. So basically, he said last month i was 181 and now im 171. He told me how amazing im doing and now im cleared for fruits and salads!! He assured me that i’d be at my goal weight by next month! Im very happy and smiling more. Today was also my first day at the gym!! Everything is getting better and im happy. (Some acid reflux irritating my throat but i got new meds for it so yup! All smiles)?

  44. Hello, all! I had gastric bypass on December 29th, so I'm only 6 days post-op, but I hit my first personal benchmark of losing 20 lbs since my 2-week liver shrinking diet pre-surgery today. If you are a visual person who is still on your weight loss journey or are looking to gain muscle, I wanted to share an awesome FREE app that helps track your progress visually and automatically takes measurements for you. It's called Me°-Three-Sixty. (No waiting for a partner to take your measurements or trying to do it yourself while holding one end of the tape measure awkwardly in your teeth or armpit.) Soooooo is it possible that with the weight change that our immune system slows down or loses effectiveness? I had an ingrown hair near my groin. Ive had them before but THIS?! It turned into an abnormally LARGE abcess within the matter of days. I went to the er. The doctors were in shock & asked me how i was managing. Anyway a nurse had to hold me as they lanced it. I screamed & cried. I also now have a weird irritation in my throat. Doctor said its probably due to the rapid weight change ?‍?

So I have been making sure that I hit 100g or more of protein every day. I typically am low carb (under 60g) low fat (under 20g). I like to be adventurous with my food and I enjoy finding new recipes that fit into my macros. However, this last month I have been trying to find recipes that are yummy and fulfill my sweet tooth without going for the ice cream, or candy. One that I discovered was a Greek Yogurt Cheesecake: 1 container of Greek yogurt (i have used Dannons light and fit , 1Tbls of SF FF Cheesecake pudding mix, 1TBL of reduced fat whip. its 115cal 12g of protein, .5g fat and 15g carbs. (you can use any variation of yogurts and pudding mixes). Carbs are higher th…
