May 2022 surgery?

Recommended Posts

I guess each doctor is different, I’m on my week 4 and I’m not allow to eat tortillas. Only crackers. I do eat Protein ( chicken, turkey, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots) all veggies overcook so it can be easier to chew. I seen many people eating beef and pork. With my Doctor I’m not allow to eat beef and pork in 6 months after the surgery. I did bought whole grain tortillas but I’m not going to eat them. I hear the first 3 months are the months you will lose the most weight so I want to take advantage of that and make my surgery and money worth every sacrifice.
I am with you Nelly Maximum results, I totally agree just because we can maybe think better options

Hi there! My VSG surgery was on 5/3, so I’m 3 days post op. I actually had three surgeries in one. I had my VSG, I had my gallbladder taken out and I had a hiatal hernia repaired. So far, so good. Other than discomfort and swelling it hasn’t been as bad as I expected.

Hey Noemis65!!! Glad to see you finally made it over here lol I was about to message you and see how you're doing today.

Its my understanding its due the the BMI, the higher it is the more likely the 2 weeks liquid diet is required. I have a high BMI and I have to have all liquids for 2 weeks. I have seen some on here with higher BMI than me or the same and they are allowed a low calorie, low carb, lean Protein meal. No such luck for me. Ultimately its down to what the surgeon doing the surgery wants. I too find alot of varying directives on this.... 🤔

This doesn't make any sense. If it's BMI based, then those who have higher BMIs would have liquid diets but you contradicted that statement.

My surgeon stated it's based on preference and also where you are having the surgery. My surgeon is performing my surgery in a Circle of Excellence (COE) hospital that requires the two week liquid diet because it has shown better outcomes, reduced surgery time, and less complications. Another hospital system that has their own bariatric program in my state does a one week liquid diet after a week of low calorie, low carb meals with lean Protein.

Like any other medical procedure, the pre-op isn't always a one size fits all.

As I mentioned in my post this is what my surgeon follows not every surgeon follows this rule. She prefers her patients do the 2 week liquid diet for optimal results.

I never said this is what all surgeons follow I clearly stated this is the route my surgeon requires.

You are following your surgeons guidelines just as I followed mine!

My surgery is May 12th. I’m on day 2 of my pre-op diet, I’m allowed to have 4 of my Bariatric Advantage shakes per day, Clear Liquids, and 2cups of veggies a day. Today I’m having muscle cramps from peeing so much! I’m getting really excited for my procedure. I’m 5’9 and weigh 300lbs.

hi, and welcome. I'm 67 and hoping for bypass and hernia repair in mid-june. I meet with my surgeon for what they call the Results (from pre-procedure testing) Visit on may 16. I am hoping that I can be given a date for surgery at that visit.

What someone told you here is what I have been told regarding post surgery eating plan, BUT I do know that it all depends on one's healing.

I wish I had done this about 10 years when the lbs started coming on, the weight fluctuation began, and no matter what I did, I did not lose.

Good luck!

I say the same thing to myself Marianne, I wish I had done this many years ago after I stopped having kids and ended up with all the pounds after birth! but I guess nothing is too late there is a reason for everything happening in our lives, I guess the time is NOW!

I wish you all the best with your surgery as mine is due soon fingers crossed, they said on the 16th of May IF beds are available from covid patients! Lol

Please keep me posted with your surgery and all the best.

Had my surgery 5/6/22. The initial pain the first day was really bad. After about 8 hours and taking my meds it was 80% better. I am up now with gas pains but more discomfort than pain.

Hi, merill! I’ll be thinking of you on the 16th!
And you are right! It’s never too late for anything! I married the love of my life when I was 40. We have 3 kids (23, 21 and 21). I only started thinking about this surgery in January of this year, but that’s fine. I’m very excited about this, I may be 67 chronologically but in my head, I’m much younger.
Keep me posted and good luck! ❤️

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
