HI all!!! So I had my bypass on 11/17/21 a few days after I started getting really nauseous and couldn't eat of drink. The Friday after Thanksgiving I begin throwing up massive amounts of blood and clots. My surgeon rushed me to ER. They did a CT scan and everything looked good. They admitted me and started fluids. over the next week I had an endoscopy and a text on my gallbladder. The endoscopy showed no new blood but my stomach lining was VERY irritated. The gallbladder test showed it was not draining properly. He decided he was going to remove it. At the same time he was getting concerned because my numbers were out of whack and my protein levels were dropping. They put a central line in and began feeding me TPN through it. Gallbladder surgery went well and he was very happy he removed it because it was very distended.

I was discharged a week ago with TPN. So now I am home with my central line and TPN every night. I still can't really eat anything and even drinking causes me pain and nausea.

Anyone experience ANY of this???

I'm so sorry your going through this. I also had surgery on 11/22 and then Friday after Thanksgiving was super sick. Called ambulance Saturday at like 5am and ended up being rushed into a second surgery for an internal hernia repair and a bow obstruction caused by one of my stitches popping from my bypass surgery. I need to go get my blood drawn too because my numbers are off. Co2 is low and my anion Gap and potassium are High. Our bodies went through a lot having two surgeries. Do the best you can, follow your discharge instructions and listen to your body. Goodluck!!

I'm so sorry for both of you! While complication rates are low for this surgery, they aren't zero, so unfortunately some folks go through these situations. I think it's definitely helpful to share so that others have a realistic view of the risks instead of assuming sunshine and rainbows. Hopefully this is the worst of it and it'll end up being a small blip in your life history. Hang in there!

Yeah a home health nurse comes once a week to take blood for lab tests and change my bandage on my central line.

it's rare but it happens. Sorry you're going through this.

How awful Lem! I hope you recover quickly from the second big op and that everything goes really well for you from here onwards. Babin.jessica too.

Update - I needed a 3rd surgery. There were 2 areas that scar tissue developed and chocked off areas. Not allowing food to pass. I had it this morning. He said it will take a few weeks for stomach to heal but I should be able to stop the IV nutrition in a week or 2.

Yep, I've had tons of problems after my bypass. Had it in Oct and have basically been throwing up everything since. I've had 3 EGDs and found a huge ulcer at the anastamosis, hernia and severely malnutritioned. Was admitted to the hospital for a week on IVs and had a feeding tube placed for 3 weeks until I pulled it out. I'm going on 4 months of hell. I have to do weekly bloodwork and 6hr long Infusions of potassium and magnesium because they're so low. My protein is low as well but strangely not too bad.
I regret this so much & at this point Dr's are considering reversal.

Yes! Thank you for putting it that way "helpful to share so that others have a realistic view of the risks instead of assuming sunshine and rainbows". I was prepared for getting the sleeve. Dr told me yesterday I have to have bypass so now I'm reading all of the bypass forums to get a realistic view on how that's going to go. I know everything surgery can have complications but I want to be prepared for things that can happen that way I'm not panicking over something that might be normal. Or to even be prepared for something not so normal (then at least I'd know what to do right away and know what can possibly come of it). I like to hear all of the good AND bad!

I had RNY to RNY revision surgery on 12/21/21. I thought I was fine, slowly recovering, until 10 days later when I started coughing up blood. I was airlifted back to the surgical hospital with a perforated jejunum at the anastomosis and SEPSIS. I had emergency surgery and was close to death for several days. I was in the hospital for 7 weeks and in a rehab facility for 3 weeks. I was discharged with a 15 cm long open surgical wound which is still not entirely healed 3 months later (but getting close). I resumed normal activities after returning home and have no pain from the open surgical wound. I have volunteer nurses who come to my home to do dressing changes, now every other day.

Because of three necessary endoscopic procedures looking for leaks or abscesses my anastomosis is stretched and I have no more restriction than I had before the revision surgery. I had lost 70 lbs prior to surgery by cutting out all sugar, flour, rice, white potatoes, processed food. I've lost 25 more since the revision.

I've been told to get 90 mg protein daily and to limit my calories to 800--which is VERY difficult. To add insult to injury I'm starting to lose my hair, too. I'm really struggling with cravings in the afternoon and night. We are now considering a prescription for CONTRAVE.

Do I have regrets for having the revision surgery? Of course! I wish I had left it alone. I wish my surgeon had aborted the revision when he found I had dense adhesions. However, I'm well now and am approaching a 100 lb weight loss.
