Something that recently hit me: I am noticeably smaller than my partner. I'm not the big woman with a skinny guy anymore, I'm officially the little spoon. It's such uncharted territory, and I love that I'm getting to experience it!

Yes! And not just wearing it, but wrapping it around yourself. At my previous slimmest, I could just get into his jeans, now they fall off me! 😀

I love a cross body handbag. My NSV is having to shorten the strap because the bag hangs way to low now that my back is so much thinner.

Yes! I had a blue handbag in storage which, even with the strap extended as long as it could, would sit waaaay too close to my armpit pre-surgery. Now it sits at my hip. The downside is that it's spent SO long in storage the faux leather is starting to disintegrate. The NSV that got away!

Here is a fun one!

So, I have always been super fat so when it came to food in public I would over think things.

For example: If we went to a serve yourself place (buffet, wedding, event, etc) I would NEVER bring back extra food or an extra plate for my wife or anyone I was with. I didn't want to be "the fat girl with 2 plates". Or, if we went somewhere with assigned seating, I would always get the pick of the seat I wanted, hoping to be an end seat so I can overflow into the isle... OK OK You get the point.

We went to a Broadway show (Beetlejuice- was awesome, different conversation) and when I went to pick my seat my wife said "Nope you are smaller than me now, I want that seat" HAHA I didn't think much of it.

But, then this weekend we were at an all inclusive resort which had like a late night snack grab and go thing. I said I was going to see what they had to get a snack and my wife says "bring me back something"... I did... 2 PLATES!

THAT'S RIGHT, THAT'S THE NSV! HAHA I carried 2 plates of food back from the self serve bar and didn't even hesitate.

Funny but a NSV for me, none the less!!!

I can relate to the seating issues. I work in a high school and last year (I had my RNY 6/22) I had to SQUEEZE in and out of the desks and HATED it. I felt like every time I stood up all the kids were watching and judging (high Schoolers that could've cared less). I had to push my way out. Now I get in and out so easy! Again, the students could care less.

Me too. My partner has a disability so I would get his food and then go back for my own. Never, ever be seen carrying two at once. Now, meh, who cares, not me.

Love this NSV.

For me - gone are the days of panicking when a waiter starts to show my family to a booth, rather than a table where I can push my chair back as far as I need. Some of the most public embarrassment I've faced during my life as a person with obesity.

Yes to this one too! The bench stools at the airport that are bolted into the floor, with a metal back that I never used to sit in (I'd stand at the bench instead) are now super roomy and I could plop a child on my lap and still fit. No-Longer-Fearing-Chairs is honestly one of the enduring NSV high-points. 🤸‍♀️

So true! The couch at my therapists office is getting bigger and bigger.😊 The world finally fitting is definitely a plus.

I know exactly what you mean about being self-conscious about food in public, and I've been in that same situation of not wanting to bring food back for someone else because I know no one would believe me. That is very cool that you can feel free to carry two plates of food now.

Sadly, even after losing the weight, I still hate eating in front of people and I still carry that shame about food. Even when I'm eating healthy food, I still feel like people are watching and judging what I eat. A few months back, I was buying fish at a seafood market and I asked for advice about how to cook a certain kind of fish, and the lady at the counter started to say it's good fried, but then she stopped and said, "Well, you're probably into healthy cooking, right?" based on nothing but looking at me, and it felt so weird! I don't think I'll ever lose the scars of being the fat girl.

Oh, man, I have so many horrible memories of those chairs with attached desks. I haven't encountered one since I lost weight, but now that I think about it, I kind of want to see what it's like to fit into one comfortably!

Yes! I used to hate booths so much, but I was too embarrassed to speak up and ask for a table because I was too fat to fit in a booth, so I just had to hope and pray to get a booth. I wonder if servers think about that. You would think it would come up often enough that they would try to be nice and default to a table when they see a plus-sized customer. Anyway, it is nice not to have the emotional burden of always having to wonder if I will fit into a seat.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
