Shrinking Violets -- April 07 Bandsters

Recommended Posts

Kity~~ Oh good, I was worried there. I thought I'd have to fly out to Ca for a Springsteen intervention! ;) and yes, I think "100 times" gives us new insight into you! :D

Having a good day... day 3 of pre-op eating... it's ok... I keep my goal in mind, which is to be down at least 10 lbs by my surgery pre-op... that's keeping me honest! Then I'll go on the 2-weeks liquid diet in prep for surgery... which will definitely keep me on track, cuz' I don't want to get there & have them say "uh, no!". Then it's the band for life! :lunch:

Wow this was quick and easy (so far!). I was banded this morning at 8am and it's 1:45pm and I'm home. Not much pain - except for some gassy pains under my ribs I think. No nausea..I'm drinking fluids fine so far. I can't believe it's over!!!!

Hi all, I am a friend of Tracy's from LCF. I was just checking to see if any one has heard from her yet. But it looks like she is hoping to post tomorrow.

Still no word from Tracy yet! Must be some good pain meds ;)

Jennifur- I felt the same way the day before my operation. My 'last meal' was french onion Soup from Longhorn Steakhouse.. asked them to strain the onions, and no cheese/bread. It was the single best broth I've ever had in my life. And NOT just because I was starving at the time. It was SO flavorful and mmmm. I wanted to get a pint to go, but we were going to be there for 3 days before coming home and no refrigerator in the hotels. We have a local Longhorn but it's a ways away, one of these days I'm going to get a pint to bring home. It really is the best!

silly how something so simple can make us happy. LOL

Only a few more days - and I can officially have mushies. Counting down. It doesn't take much to fill me but something other than broth and milk would be so good. I don't even know what to start with.

My Dr. has cream of wheat as one of the first things... but YUCK. I have some grits, but I don't want to have carbs, I want something full of flavor!

any suggestions for first trial food? I just want everything LOL

I made it out of surgery and am doing great so far. No gas pains! I started walking as soon as I woke up. My stomach is definately sore, but when I decided to put ice on it, it only made things worse. When is it ok to put ice or heat on the incisions?

I put heat on mind the day after I got home, I was so full of pain meds the night I got home I didn't notice the pain in my stomach. I did not make it too hot and put it on top of my blanket so it was not right on them. but did it feel great. I started ice a couple days later, which did more for the swelling and wish I did a bit earlier, but the heat initally felt good.

Hope that helps

Actually I still have 1 painful spot on my stomach and have ice on it now and going to lie down with some good pain meds, I need to sleep

T-r-a-c-y... ohhhhhh T-r-a-c-y... come out come out whereever you are!

Wish your dbf would post for you... silly boy!

I have to believe that you're snuggled up in your hospital bed... or better yet, walking all over the place preaching the good word of the band to everyone & anyone who'll listen! Hey... they're all sick people, so they can't run away from you real fast! LOL!

Wishing you pain-free dreams...

mdrai- LOL!! Preaching about the good band.. you crack me up ;)

Her dbf should come update us.. or wake her up and walk her to the computer!!!!!

I keep checking back, hoped to hear back before I went to bed. Anyone know if she said she'd be coming home same day? (I know they kept me 23 hours)

---

Congrats Becky and welcome to the other side!! My doctor didn't tell me I needed ice or heat.. But I did buy some of those self-heating pads you can tape to yourself (of course I'm too big to tape it down, but I layed them on me, let my gigantuous boobs hold them down and would sleep with them on).

---

And now my concern today ugh.. I was down to 311 2 days ago, stopped weighing myself for a day, this morning I was 314!!! I went back to myplate, I'm only getting 300-400 calories a day, how could I possibly put on 3lbs?! I refuse to change my ticker yet, I know it has to be an error due to something.. I just don't know how I'd gain 3lbs in a day.. that's not possible is it?

Jenn, I really enjoyed the cream of wheat as one of my first foods....but I doctored it up with butter, splenda and cinnamon. I've also used Davinci syrups in Praline and Caramel. Delish!!! You won't believe how flavors you used to take for granted will now have a whole new dimension and meaning for you. tonight I had scrambled eggs with cheese and salsa. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. In the 'old days' I would have been SOOO BORED with that....but NOT NOW!! Gourmet, baby...gourmet!!

Scrambled eggs with salsa, I did that on Atkins. I thought it sounded HORRIBLE!! But let me tell you (Oh, I also had a dash of sour cream), it was absolutely wonderful. And I really do NOT like mexican foods, so I had low hopes.. I also like scrambled eggs with ketchup.. such a neat flavor.

Anyway (gah sip sip sip..stupid food talk j/k!)

Cream of Wheat.. I know as a kid, my mom made this for us.. and I loved it when she made it (I think it involved sugar). When I was grown and out of the house, I kept some to make. I made it once, and I don't know what I did wrong. It was a completely different texture, I couldn't get the sugar blended well.. and I never has cream of wheat again. I did buy some for my post-op diet, and plan to ask mom how to make it and try using something besides sugar, but I'm not too sure how that's going to end up.

I look forward to grits. I can't wait to have grits with lots of my Can't Believe It's Not Better 0 calorie butter spray.. that stuff rocks my world LOL. I read somewhere not to use diet stuff, but I love it.. and 0 calories.. you can't beat that. Or grits with scrambled eggs in it. I'm going to have to go get a Jello snack before I go to bed!! I posted this in the food section, I found out crab is really high in Protein and it's an ok food for most people.. so that's going to be my first mushy food. A Crab cake from Ruby Tuesday's.. 10 days!(I think).

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
