Where are the 50s ???

Recommended Posts

Just jumping into the mix here looking for an easy group to fit into and I read some of all your posts and you sound like a good strong group to mingle with. I'm Katie from L.A. almost 57, had my sleeve surgery 4/6/12 so just about 11 weeks out. Down almost 70 pounds since last summer, pre-op weight loss about 30 pounds, 12 week pre-op program. Losing slow but steady, keepin the faith in this process. Still getting the hang of what my sleeve will tolerate, days are good, evenings harder, sleeve picky at night. Doing low carb about 40 grams or less a day, not easy but getting used to it to keep the weight coming off. Hope to get to know you. Had surgery in Los Angeles Kaiser without any complications.

Hi Joni - love the spelling of your name - just like Joni Mitchell, one of my favorite singers. Since we are all around the same age, I'm sure we have similar experiences of coming of age in the 60's-70's. My son was downloading music on my Ipod (my daughter got it for me for Christmas - for working out) I asked him to download Joni Mitchell - Miles of Aisles, one of my favorite albums.

So looks like we had surgery around the same time Joni - April 2012. I have found that I have to just keep my head in the right place and hopefully my body will follow. The weight loss is much slower than some others I have seen, but if you look at my profile picture gallery - at my highest weight of nearly 280 - I have seen positive change and I feel better than I have in decades.

How are you doing and are you struggling with anything related to your new sleeve?

Hi Sisilian

Thank you so much. I am home now and under care here. Hurting puppy to say the least. But that is today. What makes me sad is 1) the delay in healing now that I will miss the whole summer of swimming. And 2) the lack of care given to me in Mexico. I just don't want anyone to go what I went through. Thanks for listening very emotional.

This makes me very sad you went throught that. I never had any trouble with my incisions and was told how to clean them when I left the hospital. I was checked on by Rosie several times at the hotel before I left. I am so sorry you are going through this.

Thanks girls

I wish I had been checked and told how to clean my incisions too.lol. Now it is costing me more after seeing the surgeon again today with. O freezing she cut away more tissue and I have to go to Von 2 times per day to have it repacked. She said it could take another month. I was praying so hard that my experience would have been a good one. Seems all I do lately is cry. Was my decision a good one? I can't answer that right now. Can't see beyond the pain lol. Thank you for your kind words. Please keep writing. I wish someone else with a bad experience would come forward just to let everyone know that it DOES happen.

Kat

Kat, just hate you are facing this. Makes me feel even more blessed by the great hospital I went to. I know there will be an end to the problems you are experiencing. You are in my thoughts and prayers every day until you are feeling better.

Thanks new_hope and sandy

Please keep me in your prayers as my sense of humor is surely gone. Getting to the point where I just don't know what to say if anything. With so many positive outcomes it is so hard to stay strong. Thanks again

Kat

Oh Kat, sorry to hear about how much you are having to suffer through this. One never knows the outcome of surgical procedures, we go in hoping for the best but we read so many stories of problems, strictures, blood clots, but this wasn't your fault and the protocols for patient care were breeched, overlooked, however it happened, you were harmed. I wish you wellness and healing. You will get thru this.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
