PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. ok, so i am 2 days away and am very very nervous. Me, my husband and my best friend decided to get away for the weekend and go to San Antonio to visit my husbands brother. we made plans to go tubing down the river and go out dancing.. you know just hang out. all was fun but the hurdles i had to jump was crazy!! do you know how hard it is to be 23, not to drink when out with your buddies?? its very difficult! but i didnt. as far as my pre-op diet goes. i was so proud of myself until about 3 am ssaturday night. we stopped by whatabuger after dancing. this little hill billy place wasnt serving breckfast so eggs were out of the question! so, yes i was starving and i did it...…

I have my surgery scheuled for Sept 17th. I am really excited, but recently ran into a person that told me-- I hope they don't postpone your surgery like they did her friends due to a "fatty liver". Does anyone know anything about that.... and if so-- what do I need to do in order to prepare so that I do not face the same obstacle. Thanks!!!

I have been meaning to ask this and then I forget! But, I have a 6-1/2-year-old son, which means if he gets sick....I get sick...And twice when he has gotten the stomch flu I have gotten it and I usually get it worse than anyone else. Once I had it so bad when I went to the ER I had purple splotches on my face and the veins in my eyeballs were busted. The ER doc looked at my husband and then at me and said, "who has been strangling you." I said, No one. I have been vomiting all night long and dry heaving. So, this is my MAJOR apprehension. I am terrified when I get banded I am going to end up with the stomach flu and end up with a slipped band, because I tell ya, wh…

I'm not sure if there's anyone like me but I don't like a jiggle in my butt, stomach and boobs so all of my under clothes are support everything (panty girdle's and minimizers). I was wondering though, the day of surgery with all the incisions would it be wise for me to get some cotton granny panties and wear a cute sun dress that's loose. Suggestions welcomed.

Hi Everyone - I am getting banded next Thursday, August 28th and I just started my pro-opt Medifast/300 calorie diet. I notised I'm getting headches and I'm cranky. It can't possibily because I'm not getting enough protien; I'm following what I need to do exactly. Is this just the initical shock of not eating like I'm used to? Did this happen to anyone else and will I feel less cranky as I'm more days into it? Can anyone tell me what it's been like for them? Katiegrrl

  9. by Aetna -- have furnished 3 years of weight history -- saw my doc on Thursday and he's sending in the request for approval for my lap-band surgery. My husband is still against it, but will support me if I'm adamant about having this. Doc says not to be surprised if they refuse it initially -- then he says he'll have to get on the phone and "remind" them that I've done everything they require. But I can't do anything for at least 5-6 weeks anyway -- I had emergency surgery to remove a portion of my colon on July 1, so he wants to wait at least 12 weeks until he does this surgery. Hopefully the two won't conflict with each other! BTW, Would someone tell me how…

  11. Hi All! I know I can ask my doc about this and I will, but I wanted a concensus.... I'm doing a fairly long pre-op "atkinsesque" diet to shrink my fatty liver, consisting of 2-3 low carb shakes, lots of water, and "palm sized" lean protein (only fish turkey or chicken) and some low carb veggies. What I was wondering is...I'm going NUTS! Do you think I could chew some sugar free gum, just to get rid of the ick taste in my mouth? Plus it gives me something to gnaw on besides my chair arm. I don't want to blow it; and I CAN tough it out if I have to. Had I followed his rules properly at first I'd have been banded 8/11, so I don't want to cheat. Just wondering if,…

Well, I'm to be banded Sept. 12, and starting to think about stocking up for pre and post surgery. My Dr is saying a two week pre surgery diet. Protein shake for breakfast and lunch, small meal with protien and veggies for dinner, no red meat. I'm thinking hmmm... if I had a regular life and schedule that would work. I'm up 16-18 hours or more a day with overtime, I work a swingshift too. This is really gonna suck!!! I'm starting to wonder how I'm going to cope and have any energy with that little food in such a long time span. Like right now I'm on afternoon shift. I've been up since 7am when the 2yr old gets up, went to work at 3pm and I'll be hear until 3am, th…

There are so many different results I have read about in the blogs, I wonder what is an average weight loss for say one month???

But, what bothers me is I talked to my insurance to find out if they cover the psych eval and the nutrition eval and they said they did. However, I am going to have to pay 200.00 for the psych eval and 200 for the nutrition consult, because apparently the doctors in the surgeons office does not take the insurance? Does anyone know if MS BCBS covers lap band surgery and, if so, what are the requirements? What was your experience? I just had my first visit at Dr. Avara's office in Ocean Springs last night. Setting out on my 6 month worth of visits with a local FP. I have a BMI of 40, not diabetic, not been diagnosed with hypertension. I don't want to HAVE to life threatening illnesses for insurance to pay for this surgery....that is why I want the surgery! Argh. Thanks so much!

My question is how much effort should I put into my 3 month supervised diet? I am feeling very motivated and want to give it my all. I have two reasons to think maybe I should take it easy. The first one is I'm 5'6" but the MD measured me wrong and documented that I am 5'7.25"(I told her she was wrong and she argued with me). I had the dietitian remeasure me and she agreed that I am in fact 5'6". She said she would change it, but if the insurance company gets a hold of the wrong height, it really changes my BMI:angry:! So my second concern is that my starting BMI (assuming we use the 5'6" for my height) was 42.1, now after losing 6lbs it is down to 41.6. So if I lose 10 l…

I don't know if I should tell the whole world, or keep it to myself.
