December Bandsters 2009

Recommended Posts

December 2 was the day! After the ordeal of the past couple of weeks (incorrect EKG that reported a major heart attack and waiting a week to get results of thallium stress test!) I was totally in the groove and ready to go. No nerves. Post-op I never had any really significant pain, just discomfort from the gas collected in my shoulders, bad sore throat, and for a couple of days, ouchey around the 5 laparascopic incisions. I got 4 injections of heparin (to prevent clot formation) so the lap sites oozed blood for a couple of days. Now on day 4 I'm feeling good except for being tired. My cream of wheat, runny oatmeal and other delicacies have gone down well. I'm doing laps around the house to help with gas dispersion. It really is like so many people have said; the gas is the worst part. It's great to be over this hurdle and look forward to dropping lots of flab. CAN'T wait till I can start getting rid of my fat clothes. I also noticed that my blood pressure has already fell 15 points (lost 16 lbs. on Optifast). It's all good!!

Kayrna, are you having a lot of pressure, like sever reflux? Are you able to drink alll the liquids you need?

Terri

Hi Terri, There's a lot of pressure, yes. It feels like someone's pushing on my front AND back. I keep taking deep breaths in now that it's a little more comfortable to breathe deeply - its still not easy to breathe. I can drink fluids - in small sips. I've had Water, crystal lite and Decaf coffee. Mmm loving the warm coffee. I'm up and dressed and pulling-out Christmas decorations. But I am starting to feel a little nauseous (burping and such...? Today's supposed to be a difficult day but it's okay so far. I keep reminding myself that I was in surgery yesterday.

Hang in there - it gets better,

Karyn

Congrats to all who have their bands in place. My date is approaching, 12/21 and I go for EGD on Monday-to make sure no hernia. I think that I will start my pre op diet then. I only have to do a 7 day but if I can try for 14 even better. I was given the option of slim fast or sugar free carnation instant Breakfast. Since I have just heard about the slim fast :w00t:-Carnataion it is! I can hardly wait...I'm so excited!!! :tongue2:

Hello everyone,

This is my first post.

My surgery is set for 12/30/09 so I barley fall into the Dec bandsters category & I can't wait. I'm a little bit unsure of the liquid diet through Christmas however. It may be tough but I told my wife I would lock myself in the bedroom while everyone else eats.

I meet with the nutritionist Monday to find out what is expected & allowed. I started with the seminar back in April ~ denied by insurance:mad2:. Started 6 month Dr. supervised weight loss program in May ~ gained 8lbs. Re-applied to insurance co. and received approval on Dec. 2nd. Surgeons office set banding date for this Dec 30 :w00t:.

Looking forward to adding many years to my life.

Starting weight:307

Goal weight:192

Hi everyone!... I'm back and I'm BANDED! My appt. was at noon (pst) yesterday and I was back home by around 5 pm. Everything went fine and everyone at the srgi-center was great. It felt like I was surrounded by family. I woke-up from surgery feeling pressure in the soloplex area and I didn't feel like I could inhale deeply (which is normal, I guess). This morning, I'm a little sore at the incision sites, but that's about it. The doctor said today might be a little rougher cause all the good medicine will be out of my system.

Anyway, I just wanted to check-in with you and let you know that it went well. Thank you for the thoughts and prayers.

CONGRATULATIONS on your successful surgery! Glad to hear you're doing well! :w00t:

my doc said that i could not use slim fast. it was never an option. i have bought some Unjury but have not even tried it yet....maybe everyone should list their favorites so we can have options to choose from. i am going to go on line and see if i can find Optifast but i doubt it. I figured out my tickweight.pnger tape....yeah!

My doctors office gave me samples of a Protein Shake called Chike, I tried all 5 flavors and to be honest...I liked them all. I ended up ordering some of the banana & orange, just because I can pick up choc, strawberry & vanilla in other brands in the store for a change if I need to. They have a sample pack online you can order and only pay shipping. I highly recommend trying them, I never thought I would really like a Protein shake, but have been drinking them for breakfast for over a month now just because I like them

The orange flavor taste like an orange dream cycle :tongue2::w00t:

Chike Nutrition - Best Tasting Meal Replacement Shake. Guaranteed. Pour, Shake, Drink & Go!

I hope this helps! Good luck!!

Ok, countdown! I can't "eat" anything after midnight and Clear Liquids only until 10am. My surgery will be at 2pm tomorrow. I'm starting to get nervous and am scouring these boards for what I can expect post-op. I'm happy to have found you all!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
