JUNE 2009 Lap Band Surgery

Recommended Posts

HI, I was banded on 6/10 in Houston by Dr. Spivak. I just had my first scrambled egg and it was amazing! I am so afraid to eat for fear of pulling out stitches or stretching something. It seems like all of the post op diets are so different. BTW what is June Journeys?

Asbruce, Dr. Spivak was my daughter's surgeon also. She loved him. Because she was self-pay, she clearly didn't have to do the six-month jumping through the hoops and he is very aggressive about not doing much of the post-op diet. His philosphy is you need to learn how to eat/live with your band as soon as possible. She also wasn't on pre-op diet. She went out and ate mexican food the day before... I don't know if you know his history with the band. He's truly one of the leading surgeons in the country and still works on FDA trials.

I was reading the posts earlier today and now I can't find the one I want to comment about. But someone mentioned muscle spasm around the port or incisions. That totally explains what I am feeling! I described it to my doc yesterday as feeling like Braxton Hicks (if you've been pregnant). He didn't have a clue. But muscle spasm is totally what it is!!!!!!!!! Mystery solved! Now after analyzing that thought from remembering something my chiropractor said is that the muscle (around the port area) has been moved and it knows its not where it is suppose to be so it is trying to adjust itself. That totallly make sense to me!!! Thank you whomever mentioned the muscle spam!

Good luck to everybody whose surgery is coming up soon! Gonna do great!

I've set my first mini-goal. Before the band, this would have been a major goal! I'm looking forward to losing 48 pounds, which will put me at my previous "high" -- you know, the weight where I went "Oh my goodness! How did this happen?! I'm losing this weight!" Lost forty of it, then gained eighty back... y'all know the story, right? I'm 17.5 pounds down from my highest weight, so that puts me only 30 pounds away from my mini-goal! I think when I reach that weight, I'll do my first set of progress pics.

How's everybody else doing today?

Yes it was your post! I'm glad it's not just me. :) I am 100% positive about my answer that the muscles are spasming cuz it's been moved, but of course ask your doc.

I feel better and better every day! I am so energetic I want to walk but my fam it SO supportive of helping me (note the sarcasm) that it was an overwhelming NO. So we went to the movies (and then snuck into another one ). Now it's warm and very bright outside so I will wait for a bit.

Hey, I met one of my mini-goals!! I have a beautiful amethyst ring that my fingers got too big to where comfortably, so I told myself I can't wear it regularly until I am below 250. YEA!! I can wear it now!!

Now I gotta think of my next mini-goal and reward. I'd like to do a 5k in a few months. But weight wise I guess 235 is a goal cuz I was that weight the longest of my adult life.

I had surgery June 15th, and let me say.... these message boards have been AMAZING! I woke up in recovery with a smile on my face. 24 hours later... I was in pain med HELL. I don't do well with meds and they gave me darvocet, and I was soooo naucious. I couldn't stop what I call "Herfing". Usually, I would just vomit, get it out of my system, and throw my meds out. BUT... I was so scared to vomit! What if my band slipped? I kept it all down, switched to liquid Tylenol, and cried myself to sleep saying... Why did I do this to myself??? My hubby rubbed my back and told me that I did the right thing. 24 hours after throwing my meds out... OMG! What a difference!!!!! I could do without the gas pains, and the fake burping. Don't you hate it when you think your going to burp and then your chest erupts in pain instead?? Yea... NOT FUN! But, I have been walking a couple times a day and today I even deep cleaned my house and scrubbed out the fridge. I spend most of my down time on here, reading other peoples stories and saying to myself.... THAT'S why I feel that pain in my chest! Thank God, I AM NORMAL! I just wanted to say that I don't talk much, but I'm listening. You beginning Juners are the trailblazers. I love hearing how your doing, how your feeling, and what the road ahead is going to be like. Thanks for all your imput! And to the late Juners who are reading my post... It WILL get better. You might have it easy and I hope you do, BUT if you have it a little rough, just remember that this is temporary pain and discomfort. We are all going to be Smokin' HOT by next June!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
