That would be the best way to eat meat, save hunting and eating wild game. For me personally I don't have a problem supplementing B12 if my blood work shows I am lacking.

I would really like to get my intake of fat down lower because heart disease is prevalent in my family. My mom passed from a stroke and my father a massive heart attack. I don't have to follow their paths.

My ideal diet would eliminate oil and cheese. I can get plenty of good fats from plants. I need to learn to cook without my olive oil. I am working on it.

I've been enjoying reading up on the Blue Zones.

Here's a pretty good article that explains the similarities pretty well:

An interesting note. Of the 5 Blue Zones, only one was Vegan, and the study showed that the Vegans that also consumed fish (Pescatarians) actually fared slightly better than the regular vegans. Even so, Big Macs and French Fries didn't feature in any of those Zones' diets ;)

Whole, unprocessed grains, Beans, nuts/seeds, fresh produce, fruit, red wine, purple veggies, very small amounts of dairy (averaging 1/2 cup a day or less), 2-3 eggs per week, meat featured at most once a week. Fish a few times a week. Olive oil is ok. No added sugar or white flour. A bit of honey is ok.

They drink coffee, tea, Water, and wine. No fruit juices, vegetable juices, soda, etc. etc.

Sweets happen on special occasions... not daily.

I love this! I'm already all about the single-ingredient shopping, so of COURSE I'll like it! Lol! So many parts of this plan just seem right.

Now that I'm able to eat a bit more, I think I'll find I can meet my Protein goals with 8oz beans, an ounce of nuts, and a 3oz serving of fish each day. They recommend no more than 12oz of fish a week, so that can take care of 4 dinners. The other nights can be eggs, cottage cheese, and meat.

The hardest thing is to stop putting milk in my tea and coffee... :(

I am very happy for you @Berry78.

I would encourage you to try to have a couple days a week where you do not consume any meat or fish at all. You can get all the Protein you need from whole grains, beans, and vegetables. I say this because if you want to receive the maximum benefit of eating WFPB the least amount of meat or fish you can consume and still be happy would be best. You can buy non-dairy vegan Creamers for your coffee!! They are very good. I use the Trader Joe's brand.

My dh is eating one meal of salmon and one meal of either turkey or chicken per week. He has lost 5 lbs in the past 2 weeks and he told me tonight he feels very well with increased energy. The only issue he has had is a little insomnia on a couple of occasions. This might not be at all related to the diet change, but I thought it was worth mentioning. One thing that has happened is the guys in his shop (he is a diesel mechanic for the National Guard) have been giving him grief about eating a vegan diet..,men can be so childish sometimes...lol...

A cup of uncooked oats has 10g Protein (makes more than a cup prepared).

2 cups of Beans has 32g protein

1 oz nuts has 8g protein

I probably can squeeze that much food in... maybe...

But, honestly, I was hoping to get some nice veggies on board...

The thing is, that my hubby (normal sized stomach) can eat 2 cups of beans and a cup of spinach at once for dinner. No problemo. That's 35 grams of protein in one meal. He can eat all those oats for Breakfast, plus an ounce of nuts in it.. that's another 17g. One more ounce of nuts for a snack and he has met his goal for the day. lunch can be protein-free veggies and fruits.

But for me, it'll take 2 meals to eat the beans, and another 2 meals to eat the oatmeal. That's 4 meals, and I've only gotten in beans and oats, and possibly an ounce of nuts!!

Us bariatric folk HAVE to have more concentrated sources of protein. (And I can't do shakes).

I don't know if this is true unless you had a DS.

Why can't you do a shake for breakfast? I am still drinking my Chike Mocha high protein coffee shake with unsweetened almond milk every morning. It is delicious and nutritious lol... I get 20g of protein in the shake and then I don't worry about the rest of the day. I easily get 47-55g a day. Really the 47g recommended for women is padded to cover 98% of the population.

I get all my books on Amazon for Audible so I can listen to them on my 1 hour commute to and from work. This is the most efficient way for me to get through books.

Were you eating a lot of dairy, eggs, and cheese? Were you also still using vegetable oils for cooking?

I am curious because many vegetarians still eat these things and miss out on the low fat benefits of a WFPB diet.

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
