Talked to my doc today cause I had for turn in food journals for other reasons. My 3 week stall lasted for 4 weeks (and begun a week early), then 10lbs came off over 3 weeks and I'm stalled again... Anyway, I asked that since I'm 2 months out and on a regular food diet (yay! No more purréd or soft!)... About the diet, if I'd be able to have even half a glass of wine with friends or anything. He reiterated the very hard NO, and insisted I attend an AA meeting since it's the 2nd or 3rd time I've asked since pre-op.

No I'm not an addict, and it's not that big of a deal anymore I guess. It's not that I'm thirsty for a drink necessarily, but knowing I can't have something ever again is messing with my head. (Yet I was fine giving up ice cream, sweets, and 99% of fast food) maybe I do need that AA meeting... Even though I'd drink maybe 3 times a year.

Edit: reading this back, damn I'm tired and ADD is running high. Don't care enough to fix the post though.

Unless you're drinking lots of wine each of those three times a year, I seriously doubt you need an AA meeting.

I don't know what your surgeon was thinking when he said that, except that some surgeons are adamant about no alcohol, period. For all either of us know, he had a patient (or more than one) who developed alcohol problems after surgery.

I also know at two months out (I was seven weeks yesterday), what messes with our collective heads is that we are still getting used to our new normal. Portions are still so tiny that one-item meals are still the rule rather than the exception, and we're still riding with our training wheels, so to speak. There is a real thirst to know what three-six-nine months out is going to look like, in purely practical terms.

Refrain from asking your surgeon about wine again. You'll only get the same answer.

Don't they eat a ton of crap and smoke like chimneys at AA meetings? You'd be better off having your glass of wine! ;-).

I think your surgeon needs to lighten up. If you were an alcoholic I doubt you'd be asking for permission at all.

I thought the same thing! However I think I'll just follow his original advice and stay away from wine and mixed drinks permanently.

@@Stevehud I think your projecting your inner issues on other people here. Maybe you failed at some point and your trying to help others by giving advice- but you may want to consider using your words more wisely. It comes across as sarcastic, and just plain rude. This is a support community first and foremost.

I have tons to say about this topic but I am not even going to entertain this thread- especially when it's being ruled by one individuals comments, who appears to think he's some type of weight loss God.

Wow, everyone needs to take a chill pill. I don't know about most of you, but I became fat because I ate like a pig! Probably 4000 cal per day, not form the drink or two I had. It was the chicken wings, the burgers, the extremely large portions, etc, that caused me to gain weight. I had WSL because I could not control my eatiing! Now my portions are tiny, i concentrate on Protein, and I have a drink every so often, but not nearly as much as before, ( just don't like it as much). I keep it below 12-1400 cal per day and the weight is just coming off. My doc said everything in moderation, including alcohol, although beer doesn't work. Everybody has their own path to follow, and for those of you who choose not to drink, I applaud you, but for those of us that choose to drink, enjoy and Celebrate your new life style. I didn't have WSL to drink proein shakes the rest of my life!!

yes this is just a temporary thing, you wont have to change your diet for the rest of your life. Im going to make one more post after i ask you What the heck did you think this was? a diet?

NO its for the rest of your life! ask anyone here who has been successful if they still drink Protein Shakes, i guarantee you 99% will say yes, and thats 5 years post surgery. You think you just lose some weight then everything is great and easy? You really have a lot of planning to do.

So to all on here. After your honeymoon period ends. Youll look back at this time longingly. When you hit maintenance or just further along and the weight loss stops and its time to incorporate more food and yet keep your weight down, you will understand a little better what im trying to say here folks. If you think its this easy further down the road you dont understand why a large percentage of bariatric patients fail..

If you think im being mean or sarcastic, then I have succeeded, because this isnt a joke. this isnt weight watchers where you can just stop and start up again anytime.

This is for your life ladies and gentlemen and if you dont want to use this to beat obesity., then You're right you shouldn't listen, dont throw out your fat clothes, you may just need them again.

You want BS hand holding and coddling? sorry, not when it comes to stupid calories. You want help, use this to beat the bastard that is obesity.

Thank you all for the responses and being honest. I really appreciate it. I was a beer drinker but will not be drinking that anymore because of the carbonation. If I do decide to drink I'm pretty sure it's going to be white wine. Thanks again.

I was a beer drinker, but I'm switching to Crystal light and vodka. I tried it before surgery and liked it. You can take your little individual packets with you to go out to eat, parties etc. One shot vodka in a tall glass with ice Water, then I put my Crystal light in stir and wow! No carbs, in vodka or Crystal light. No carbonation, only 60 empty calories. One lasted me the whole evening.

You guys are lucky, my surgeon told me no more alcohol, ever. Not 6 weeks out, not 6 months out, never.

I had told him about a couple trips I have coming up and how I wanted to reach my goal before them if possible. He'd asked if I drank, which the answer was yes... Occasionally... He said never again. Didn't ask what, but completely shut it down instead.

Sorry for the rant, but even though I don't drink often, to have the option taken away was a surprise.

i think you should definitely drink, and eat cake and candy and french fries, heck just give in before you even start, alcohol is all sugar , very high in calories, hits you 7 times harder than it used to, and you have an incredibly higher chance of becoming an alcoholic as well. All in all, those are great reasons to just fail. Why bother dieting, come on, just eat a cake or two, i mean you dont really have to change your life, just diet for a little while then go back and eat like you used to. No one ever fails at this.

Drink up ! enjoy!

That's a little extreme.

I drink beer, whiskey and coke, vodka and diet cranberry and various other adult beverages. I am three years out in May and maintaining fine.

(I also eat cake, candy and an occasional french fry.)

Alcohol doesn't hit me "seven times harder" (can you show me the science behind that?) and I am not an alcoholic.

Just because one was a former fatty, does not mean they've lost all sense of self control when it comes to alcohol.

My advice? Follow your surgeon's direction, try your beverage of choice at home the first few times to see how it hits you and tread lightly. Make good choices and if you choose to drink, don't drive.

... when you hit your goal and keep it off then please feel free to show what people.can and cant do. when you reach goal if you can make thi work and eat a few bites of cake, well good for you, thats awesome...

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
