Ok friends. Send some good thoughts my way! I went for my 2 week check up and told the Dr. ( well, the PA is who I saw, love her! ) about all this right side belly and back pain I'm having. She mushed around on my belly ( holy ouchness!!) And said she'd like me to go over to the ER to get checked out further. ( mu surgeon is out if town. Crap) so I'm in the ER niw. IV in, labs drawn, peed in a cup, getting some fluids and waiting for radiology. I believe they're going to do a CT to see if anything bad is going on in there. I feel pretty good other than this nagging right side pain. So I don't know...guess we'll see.

@amylynns. Your in the best place to make sure all is fine. Sending all good wishes!!!

So, the surgeons office called to check on me. They said they will be calling a prescription in for some medicine to protect my stomach. I don't remember the name of it. She also wants me to get some Miralax because I haven't pooped yet. She said it should have happened by now. My big incision is hurting pretty bad tonight. I'm trying to go longer than 3 1/2 to 4 hours between my Lortab. Ugh...

@kimodell69. Be careful cutting your pain Meds too soon. When was your procedure? Your body needs to heal & the pain med help that. Unless it's been 8 days postOp or it makes you sick of follow the frequency on the script.

went to the thrift store today, started trying on 18's, went down to 16's and then to 14's. Been 20 years since a size 14 jeans. I got 1pair of 16 that is a good fit now, and one 14, that will be good in a week or two. And 4 tops, all of which size L, no X's in front of it.

Kim your surgery is still pretty recent. Take your pain meds as often as you can. I'm sure that big incision hurts.

Wahoo on the sizes! I can't wait to be a 14, I think that is a good 20lbs from now though.

So I did my 1st month stats. I'm down 25 lbs from highest weight, 17 lbs from surgery weight. I'm down 28 inches throughout my body and 2 dress sizes. I say that's a pretty good accomplishment so far.

My surgery was Wednesday, 10/28. The big incision is no fun. My stomach looks like it got all hacked up. :(

Ok. I'm home! ! Labs are all ok my liver and kidneys are good. CT scan showed ALOT of swelling with that one incision and some free Fluid below that incision. But they aren't really worried about it. If my pain gets worse I need to let them know right away. I need to take tylenol more consistently. I won't take the prescription pain meds unless totally necessary. Like last night. But I hate taking it. I still feel the effects of it today.

But no infection, so that's good! I was worried they left some chunks of gauze in there or something! Lol! When I bend over or if I'm laying down and bend my knees up, it feels like something is in there. But it's just the swelling, whew!!

Beni- the itching after surgery has always happened with me after any surgery. I guess I thought that was normal!? I'll be sure to ask about that at my next appointment.

I was able to pull off all my step - strips finally today...except the one larger incision. I'd love for it to come off too so I can clean that area up better. But I'm not yanking it off too early.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts today!!

food was never my addiction. Work is my addiction. How do I know? I was answering emails right out of surgery. I just saw one of them. Hilarious what you think sounds right when you are hopped up on narcotics.

Today I worked from home. (Surgery was last Monday.) My boss insists I don't need to come in this week as we have a big conference to facilitate next week. So, I sat down at my computer at 8 after my morning walk and... forgot to get up until about 2. Then I was hungry. Really hungry. (At least when I'm in the office, someone drags me for a walk around the building every 60-90 minutes.)

So, I'm a week out and I've figured out a couple of things.

  • The awful "nausea" I had on Thursday and Friday was my new version of hungry. Empty pouch = nausea. The dietitian and nurse bumped up my food schedule so I can have pureed Soups and even saltines. That helped. It may have something to do with my usual activity level. I get between 7000 - 12000 steps a day (as long as I don't sit down at the computer before my walk. :) )
  • If I'm not paying attention, I'll still down 8 ounces of Fluid too fast... so I can get back to work.
  • Little spoons (I bought a 50-pack of tasting spoons) are wonderful devices for slowing me down.
  • I can get my Protein in very easily with just a little planning.
  • Bariwise Fruit drinks are the bomb.
  • Crystal Light does not make good ice pops. The mix freezes in the center and the rest is just ice.
  • I hate sleeping on my back and can't wait until it doesn't hurt to sleep on my side again. Mostly, I have arthritis in my lower back and after a few hours the pain wakes me up...even if I take pain medication.

I'm still really disappointed that he wasn't able to fix the hernias. I realized today no matter how much weight I lose, with "Oscar, Ernie and Bert" (I thought it was just "Oscar the Grouch" going in), I'm going to look like I'm expecting a baby until those get repaired. I'm trying to focus on the healthy living part so I can get to the point where those can be fixed.

That's my update for now.

I'm praying for those having complications and struggles. Hang in there. We will all get there eventually.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
