I'm six days past my surgery. I have almost no pain. I've been sleeping and learning about pureed foods.

It is so great to be on this side of surgery.

I had surgery the same day as you and i am doing fine as well. I am still a little tired but no pain. I keep sipping all day and switching form bed to recliner to walks around the house. I have watched so much TV, it's insane.

Good t ear you too are doing so well. How many ounces of Fluid and grams of Protein have you been getting in?

Hi everyone. I started my full liquid diet today. I'm still having quite a bit of pain, which is getting old. Thank goodness for the Lortab. I just want to feel like myself again. I removed the bandages from my stomach yesterday and it was worse than I thought. I have 6 small incisions across the top of my stomach where they tried to do the surgery laparoscopic and then I have a 6 to 8 inch incision starting above my belly button going straight down. I have so many staples, I can't even count them. It is not very pretty at all. I am having those 'What the hell did I do to myself' thoughts. I know it will pass and everything will get better, but it just sucks right now. I am doing well drinking my liquids. I had my first Protein Drink this morning and it took me an hour to drink it down. I am still not feeling any hunger at all, which is so strange! But the smell of any food makes me nauseous. Whenever my husband eats, I make him leave the room.

Well, I wanted to check in. I hope everyone is doing well!

xoxo

Kim

So glad to hear you are doing as well as expected with a unexpected open surgery. You had to do it the hard way, lol!

It reminds me of my 3rd child. I had it all, upteen hours of labor, epidural, full dilation, pushing the baby for 20 minutes and then, BANG emergency c-section. So I had all of the usual pain associated with labor and delivery and a C-section on top. What the heck.

But this too shall pass. Your tummy will heal and in due time you will feel good about yourself again. My c-section scar, I hold with great pride. It's my battle scar. Yours too will stand as you battle scar(s). I didn't call us gladiators for no good reason, that's exactly what we are. We are willing to fight and take whatever resources come our way to do what it takes to get healthy and well again. That's what makes us WLS Gladiators.

I had my surgery last Monday, Oct. 27 and tomorrow, I head back to work! I had to ask my doctor to release me. He had no reason not to since I'm getting my fluids, my Proteins and have had no pain since day 3. I feel very, very blessed. I DID, however, make a major boo boo and tried to eat some soft stuffing with gravy, wayyyyyyy too soon and paid for it. I had a stomach ache for over an hour. I won't do that again. I needed that reminder that even though I feel well, it's because I'm following the rules. One step off the path and I quickly was reminded WHY they give us a diet to follow! LOL I'm pleased with the weight I'm losing and hope this rate continues at least for a little while longer.

I'm so sorry for those of you whom have had such a tough time :( It's hard to Celebrate our journey to a healthier new self when you are having such horrible set backs. It too, shall pass and You'll be happy you moved forward. Be strong!

Ok friends. Send some good thoughts my way! I went for my 2 week check up and told the Dr. ( well, the PA is who I saw, love her! ) about all this right side belly and back pain I'm having. She mushed around on my belly ( holy ouchness!!) And said she'd like me to go over to the ER to get checked out further. ( mu surgeon is out if town. Crap) so I'm in the ER niw. IV in, labs drawn, peed in a cup, getting some fluids and waiting for radiology. I believe they're going to do a CT to see if anything bad is going on in there. I feel pretty good other than this nagging right side pain. So I don't know...guess we'll see.

Oh @@amylynns

So sorry. I was a little worried about the swollen tummy on the right side I saw on that picture but I figured it was an allergic reaction to the anesthesia you had. You had all that itching. I know this is not the time but I fear I may forget to remind you. Make sure you find out what anesthesia you were given during surgery because you are obviously allergic. There a number of options in anesthesia and you/doctor/anesthesiologist should try to figure this out in case you have another surgery, ever.

Please let us know what they find in the CT.

Thinking of you!

So, the surgeons office called to check on me. They said they will be calling a prescription in for some medicine to protect my stomach. I don't remember the name of it. She also wants me to get some Miralax because I haven't pooped yet. She said it should have happened by now. My big incision is hurting pretty bad tonight. I'm trying to go longer than 3 1/2 to 4 hours between my Lortab. Ugh...

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
