April 2014 RNY/Bypass Post Op Support

Recommended Posts

Hello. I am 2 days post op. My weight on surgery day was 288. Hopping to get down to 150. I am new to all this but I love the idea of having friends to turn to that are going through the exact same thing as I am. And also the thought of being there for you all as well. I think it's great that we can form these circles of friendship. So to tell you a little about myself I'm 34 and live in Tennessee. My starting weight was 309. I have had chronic back pain (quiet severe at times) for 8 years. It has really stole my happiness but not anymore. I'm taking my life back as of now!! I hope all of you the best and I look forward to getting to know some friends!! :)

I'm also in Tennessee in Rutherford county (murfreesboro) where are you located?

There's a website I buy my shakes from called Chike Nutrition. U can buy a sample pack that lets u try each flavor for like 6.00. They r THE BEST shakes & only ones I can actually enjoy. They also have a high Protein iced coffee as well if u enjoy coffee (I'm not a coffee drinker, but my fiancé loves it! I highly recommend u give it a try. If u decide to try, please let me know what u think. Good luck to u

Try diet v8 splash w1 scoop of plain or vanilla protein in a 16-20oz mixer bottle they taste great, I put it in empty bottle & take to work also.

I'm in much better spirits, but I still have trouble getting in my Protein. I'm not getting enough, I know I can just drink a Protein Shake but they make me sick on my stomach. I still drink them, just not as much.. I guess I will have to try harder.

Hi All. Thank you to all who contribute to this forum. I am a 33 year old male about to undergo gastric bypass. I am 308 lbs and have developed issues such as sleep apnea, high BP , etc. Any words of wisdom or insights/advice would be welcomed. Thank you in advance for your words.

PS. Surgery date 5/27/14. I plan on returning to work 5/30 possibly 5/31. I am a school teacher so I don't have any lifting requirements. You think this will be ok? Thanks

I applaud you for your decision. I know that for me, it was not an easy one, but you'll be fine.

I do believe that you might be a little overly optimistic about your return-to-work dates at this point however. In those 4-5 days, most of the pain from the surgery will be gone, but as most of us can attest, while you're drinking nothing more than Protein shakes and Water, you're probably going to feel completely wiped out and weak.

I can't say whether or not you'll be "ok" returning to work so quickly. I can only suggest that you might plan to be a little more open to taking the normal two weeks that your doctor's office will recommend. Some us didn't need that long, some of us needed even longer for our bodies to adjust to the major changes that this surgery represents.

Best of luck,

Wayne

I had Rny on April 15. I returned to work half days on April 22. Even if you don't have any issues with pain, you will be very easily fatigued. Lifting is not the most significant issue. Expecting to return to work for full days after major surgery is not a good idea.

I would not expect to return to school so quickly. If you are like me you will not be released from the hospital for a couple of days after surgery so according to your dates you will not be out of hospital one day before returning to work and you will be on pain medication more than likely.

I am a student teacher and understand your job duties and to be honest there would be no way for me to have done them that soon after surgery.

I am 2weeks out today, surgery was on 4/28. One thing that makes me tired the most is reading so please consider taking more time for yourself and good luck!!

I went back to work with just 2 weeks off. As far as pain was just a little sore but 1/2 way they the day I felt exhausted!! I think the hardest part will be that ur energy level is very low. But I would atleast take 1 week off.

Thank you all for your words of advice. In my past weight loss efforts I tried a diet called the "fast duet" which requires some fasting. I would fast 24 hours. Go to work/ teach full day then coach our football team for another 3 hours. I would still manage to throw in a workout during this fast day and all on Water. I felt relatively ok but this is only one day as opposed to 2 week liquids only. So I am going to heed the advice and take the full week off at least.

If their are more men out there with this procedure I would really like to hear about your experience also. I have found at least in my experience that a lot of men shun the idea of surgery as an option to aid in weight loss. I guess it's a "machismo" kind of thing. Especially in my circles since I am a coach and have friends that believe that weight loss is simply calories in calories out (over simplified) or believe that it is all about will power? In any case Ladies and Gents please let me hear from you and your experiences (socially) about the weight loss procedure. Thanks

Hi all. New to posting on the post op side, but I see some of my April buddies are here already. Smiles

Today, I'm two weeks post op and overall I feel great. Better than I did before having my procedure. My allergies cause me to fight with a great deal of mucus each morning and make me feel nauseated so mornings are touch and go right now. Decaf coffee and tea help me feel better though.

At my one week post op visit my dr okay'd me to try some soft foods, but I've felt better with sticking to mostly liquids.

I've dumped once, eating a piece of fish when mentally I knew I wasn't hungry. I was full already and falling into my bad habits thinking one or two bites won't hurt. WRONG. Now when I know I'm full I throw out or put away whatever is left.

My starting weight was about 299#. Midway through my preop diet I was at 291#. At my one week post op visit I was 272#.

Still struggling to get my Protein and liquids in, but making progress.

That's great news wicked beauty! Glad to see you are doing well! I go Weds for first check up and to be honest I am ready for soft foods I am tired of soups!

I have had no problems eating or drinking. I think soft foods will bring more of a challenge to get everything in.

Not losing as much weight as I expected. Extremely disappointed in myself. I'm 6 weeks out and down 18lbs. with RNY. I really expected to lose at least 25lbs by now! Especially since I started at almost 300lbs. I could understand it if I was under 250. My sister in law lost 30lbs her 1st 3 weeks and we were about the same weight. She doesn't exercise but I'm on the treadmill regularly. I know I shouldn't compare myself to others but what is it that I'm doing wrong? Waah waah waaah *whiny, I know...lol

There are a plenty of men on here. You can look them up. There's a special "room" for guys only, I don't know if that's the name of it or not. Maybe someone else knows it exactly. Also Instagram has many diverse groups of post-ops. Use the hash tags (#) #wls #rny #bariatricsurgery #vsginstacrew #gatricbypass #gastricsleeve etc in the search. Facebook has several Gastric Bypass Support Groups as well. Hope I helped...

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
