April 2014 RNY/Bypass Post Op Support

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone, It sounds like everyone is doing well and we are all touching on the same problems. I like how some of your Doctors are following your diet and sending you up dates as you go. I think that is a real plus. I was given guide sheets in clinic and hospital to follow ,but sometimes feel lost. Reading what you are doing give me some additional information. I am still having problems getting my Protein. Last night not sure what happened but ate sugar free pudding with added protein (I had eaten one earlier no problem), Within a few minutes I think it was a dumping I became very sick it was scary terrible. I don't want that to happen again. I am trying to learn what my body is feeling and trying to tell me. Thanks everyone

sweetnell, if you would like information on post op diet plan I can give you information on what I have. My program included a six monthly nutrition class and at the last one we were given detail information on post op diet plan to insure a good success after surgery. We also have two in-person support groups a month that is facilitated by a nutritionist and psychologist - very helpful.

Sorry to hear you got sick last night. I have heard these stories and am not looking forward to experiencing. But I hear there is a lot of trial and error on what our new stomach will accept.

Take care,

MissTrish14 I'm 3 weeks today. Protein has been my big struggle. I was allowed 1/2 scrambled egg, and up to 1/4 cup canned tuna or salmon this past week. Eating "real" food was very exciting. I'm not hungry which is really good. But I don't have much energy and need to get in more protein. I'm off any protein supplements. So my calorie intake has been under 200 daily. I would like to start to exercise but I really need calories to do that.

I'm down 18.5 from the morning of surgery. 24.5 from the day I started the 3 day clear liquid diet.< /p>

I tried tuna about a week ago, it just didn't agree with me then but I'm going to try again my favorite right now is loaded baked potato Soup. I only eat about a fourth of a cup but that is enough to satisfy

I keep hearing so much about yummy Soup and I'm so bummed I am not allowed to have any!!! The downside of knowing what other people are allowed to have on their programs!!

Today was the first day I have been away from home for most of the day. I didn't think I would be gone so long, but I just got home after 6 hours. I haven't eaten since 9 am and I'm starved. My question, what do you all take for food when you don't have access to broth or yogurt or cottage cheese?

I usually stop by walgreens or rite aid or even a gas station & buy a mozzarella string cheese to hold me over & it's a perfect amount!

I use a lunch tote that keeps things cold with blue ice bar. It keeps my shake cold for hours. I carry it with me wherever I go so that I don't miss getting in my Protein Shake or Water. I'm not on any solid food yet but when I am I'm sure I can just throw the in too. We went to the botanical gardens the weekend after my surgery and I just carried my tote with me.

I just tried light applesauce and it hurts so bad. I feel like there's a brick in my chest and it's cramping. Nooooo

Today I am 8 days post op and food is not my issue. I measure my liquid because I am able to drink like normal and have had no problems. My issues right now are my emotions. I am either so short or want to cry really easy. It feels like PMS.

I know as the weight leaves my hormones increase but this is a crazy roller coaster!

Anyone else dealing with this so soon?

HI, Teacherlady, I could count back and about the same time I was bottoming out emotionally. Not sure why. I have had a lot of ups and downs. I went a whole day in bed not wanting to talk to anyone. Hang in there I think as we heal and can resume a normal life. That things will be better

Thank you! I guess I knew it would happen just so soon was a shocker and my family is not understanding where it is coming from. My husband keeps saying "what is wrong?"or blaming everything on pain! I will hang in there!! So excited for all the changes..

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
