What a Christmas present!!! My approval was swift as I was scheduled for a total hip replacement revision surgery on 10/24 that got cancelled as my surgeon wanted it done in a bigger hospital and will be done in Traverse City, maybe in late March. I was immediately approved and got a date of February 25th. Barix called this morning and they had a cancellation and my new surgery date is now January 4th with a pre-op in December 26th!!! :)

I am so glad I have been reading these forums ahead of time to try to avoid some of the pitfalls. I am going to need outside support as my daughter is totally against this and my husband is not too crazy about this either. We know quite a few who have had this procedure done - some breezed through it, a few had some issues, a few had major issues but the girl that worked with my husband died. It had something to do with the anesthesia, but it was still during this type of surgery so they think this is more dangerous than anything else.

Four years ago, I had a gastric band put in. I guess it slipped right away and I have been bullemic and fat for the last four years. Right after I had it done, my husband's place of employment closed and now my primary insurer is Medicare with a BC/BS Medigap back-up plan and at that time, Barix did not accept Medicare so I was stuck. They now accept it and as I was already pre-cleared for the surgery that was cancelled, everything went quickly.

My surgery will be January 4th at Barix in Ypsilanti, MI by Dr. Taylor. I live up north in the middle of the Huron National Forest.

Hi Everyone! My journey is similar in progress to lovealways'. I just finished my supervised diet and I am being submitted to insurance for approval. They have 30 bus days for an answer (Cigna) which puts me at Jan 24th for deadline for answer at latest. Drs office said surgery will be scheduled pretty quick after that so I may be end of January or early February. I am also getting excited and having those last minute jitters about the whole thing. Glad To see all of you here.

Insurance approved surgery for Jan 15 but that might not be the exact date. Monday 12/17 is my "test day." Then I meet with the doctor to review the results on 12/27. If everything is ok, I find out the exact date that day. Excited about losing weight and resolving health issues but apprehensive about surgery. I haven't been hospitalized since 1992 when my son was born. It will be a relief to have the surgery over and concentrate on my NEW life!

lovealways - No. From what I understand, the band slipped and created a sideways pouch and things would block the opening then nothing would stay down. By the time this would correct itself, I would be ravenous and eat and eat and eat. He did remove all of the Fluid from the band and this has helped but I still have the same problem, just a little less. It got to the point where I could not even keep liquids down. Fortunately, none of this was digested, so it came up as it went down which is still most unpleasant, but could be worse.

I was reading the band to RNY thread and it seems that on some occasions it requires two separate surgeries. I sure hope they can do mine all in one as I am over 200 miles away from the surgery center although my doctor also has an office that is about 100 miles from me for follow-up.

As soon as I am healed from this, I have to have a total hip replacment revision which is a big sugery with a long recovery time. I am hoping to be thinner and able to walk without as much pain in time for our summer musoc festivals that we attend.

BTW, my doctor does not do a pre-op liqiud diet. Just one day and two days of Dulcolax to clean out everything.

Congrats on your date! I was never really overweight until I quit smoking and my health took a drastic turn for the worse. I traded asthma and bronchitis for severe fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism, hypertension, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, gout, CAD (I have had three heart attacks with a large artery recalled stent that became totally blocked 90 days later requiring another intervention) and a laundry list of health problems. I remember telling my doc that if this had anything to do with quitting smoking, I would be glad to go back.

I had the lap band 4 years, which only caused me to become bullemic & fat (which is just plain wrong!) and now I will have the chance for it to be done properly.

All of us January surgeries are starting our new life right at the new year! We should keep in touch to keep going strong. I am sure that down the line, we will have some rough times and by posting will have support from the rest of the group. I have NO family support as they agree I should have the band removed but do not want me to have the RNY. So...all I have for any kind of support, is basically online.

I just turned 60 and am on the older end for this but I look at this way. I am about 100# overweight. I cannot lift 100# and yet I am carrying that around with me with every step I take. My joints were bad in high school and in the last few years have had both knees and a hip replaced. The hip did not heal as is should and that is next on my list. I am sure that my joints would feel better with 100# less on them, as well. I am thinking of taking an extra laundry basket and filling it with item of the same weight as I am losing so that I can lift it occasionally to actually feel just how much weight is off of my carcass! I think that might give me extra incentive and I need these little prompts.

I have been carefully reading the post-op threads to try and avoid some of the common pitfalls but found it good to discover what pains are normal and what are not after this procedure. As I am first having a band removed, then the RNY, I had never thought about that until someone mentioned that they had quite a bit of pain where they removed the port.

Another thing has been the Protein intake which seems to be key to losing the weight the proper way. First, by use of Protein powders, drinks, etc. Some of these are quite expensive and I simply cannot afford some of them. I am going to start with one of the less expensive ones in vanilla and I am going to get some flavorings so I can change it, also by adding it to cold coffee or any flavor of tea. I will not be able to exercise a lot for quite some time because of my hip but will do what I can to keep moving without causing pain.

Good luck to us all!!!

Lynn

I just got my approval today! I will be getting my surgery sometime in January. I will know the date in a couple of weeks hopefully. I will update when I have the date . I am so ready to get on with it. I started the journey in October and was orginally aiming to get my surgery Dec. 26th but insurance sat on my approval so I couldn't start my liquid diet yesterday. Then my WLS sugeon said he needed the results of my biopsy of a spot he found in my throat. He said that would not have anything to do with my surgery but he has now postponed to doing anything more until he gets the results from another doctor who did the biopsy. The doctor who did the biopsy said it was nothing and that he did not expect them to find anything in the biopsy. but I still have to wait until after he sends the results. My insurance approval has been extended through January 31,2013 . So I will be getting my surgery prior to that date.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
