Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

Recommended Posts

Sunshine-- Yes please take it easy, have hubby clean the house. You need to relax and let your body heal. I too felt like I could do it all after abt 2 wks, but I would tell the family that I needed to rest and make them do it all.

Ador-- Your new doggie is as adorable as you, she fits right in with the family that is 4 sure.

Mini -- Have fun this weekend. We are going to the lake since the trailer is already ready from our last trip (+ I have so much food left over).

Dee -- I missed seeing you last week at RR and the picture is so great of everyone. I can really see the changes from month to month. 2 more weeks and we get to see each other at the BBQ, yeah.

I keep reading that some of you are only on your 3rd fill. I have had about 6, for a while there I was having one every month. I know I am a little tight, but I like it that way. I guess we are all just so different that it takes a while to get it where we like it, right? I am finally in a place that is just right, I can eat about a half cup of food than I am done. I don't have as many stuck episodes as I used to. The last two months I have just gone in to weight and talk to Tom, than we have decided not to do a fill or an unfill, but just leave me where I am at. My next fill is set for the 7th of August. Thanks for letting me go on an don about this...

I love you gals.

I'm set to get my first fill Aug 19th, and I was wondering if you Colorado Ladies could give me some info. I was curious as to whether there is a shuttle or bus that goes somewhere near Dr.K's office from the airport? I really can't afford to rent a car, it is more expensive because I am not 25. I am planning on getting a flight that would get me there sometime around 12 so that I would have time for shuttles and such if I can get them.

Hi Lotza! I can't help with shuttles and such, but I was wondering...how long are you planning to stay in CO after your fill? Will that impact whether or not you rent a car? Dr. K likes you to stay at least a day or two afterwards, just in case you know right away whether you need it adjusted a bit more.

Ack! No one mentioned that he likes people to stay close after! I suppose this does change things a bit... guess I'll have to deliberate some more on whether to drive instead of fly.

It has been a tough 2 days here. My choc. lab Tucker went to the beach on Tuesday with some friends (about 2 hours away). Shortly after arriving, he displayed difficulty breathing; then he went into severe distress. They rushed to a local vet; the first had no idea, thought it was a lung/heart issue and there was nothing to do, but put him down. Then the second vet came out, took one look, and said his trachea was paralyzed. They called the emergency hospital in Portland and discussed the issue with the surgeons there. Three hours later they did a tracheotomy and heavily sedated him so that he would live on the two hour trip home. Meanwhile, I am here and crying my eyes out with worry. They arrived at nine that night and immediately put him in an oxygen tent. We left hospital at 10:30. I called at 8 next morning; they had taken him off oxygen at 3am; dr. would call at 10am. Dr. called and said that his larnyx was paralyzed, but we were in an "advantageous" position as it was only one side. He could still breathe on his own. We had a choice for surgery (with which comes the possibility of aspiration and pneumonia) or we could not have surgery and make sure he lives his life without excitement. It was the excitement of being at the beach that triggered the trauma. We decided not to do surgery--for now at least. I talked to our regular vet, who is an alternative/wholistic believer, and he wants to put together some Chinese herbs for calming and look at doing some acupuncture to relieve the distress. This morning (Thurs.) I called to check on his condition as we might be able to bring him home. Well, he is breathing on own, but he hasn't eaten/drunk anything and they won't release him til he does. We went in to visit him in hopes that our presence would coax him to eat something. No luck. :sad:He looked so pitiful with the hole in his neck, hair shaved, sad boy. We are going back this afternoon and are taking his girlfriend, Dollie, our Jack Russell. Maybe he will perk up seeing her.

Sorry this post is so long, but I think most of you know from your own experiences that pets can be like children. I have no kids, so to speak, so my dogs are my life's blood. Please pray, cross fingers, chant, or do whatever that Tucker gets through this. I would appreciate positive thoughts.

I thought from your post you may not know that. He told me when I had my pre-op appt and I was discussing going back to him for fills vs. finding someone local. So I had to factor in the expense of renting the car & getting a hotel room in addition to the flight.

Deb, I am so sorry about Tucker. I will be thinking of him and sending wellness vibes. I went through several years with my sweet kitty baby Gus's chronic illnesses and we also had a vet who was a firm believer in alternative medicine. They really are members of your family. Peace and healing to the both of you!

oh Deb! (tears are rolling down my cheek), I am sooooo sorry to hear about Tucker. Please keep us informed on how he and you are doing. Such a scary situation and you must have been a wreck waiting at home for him. Buster and I are sending hugs for all of you and I will not stop praying for Tucker until I hear that he is feeling better. I hope he eats soon so he can come home to his loving mommy and she can nurse him back to health.

Green, Shelbi, Mal: Thank you so much for your kind words and thoughts.

I talked to the vet again about an hour ago, and she said she is a little more concerned now because Tucker regurgitated when they took him outside. It is coming mostly from the trach. hole. She thinks 1.) his esophagus is severely irritated which means time and meds to heal or 2)what we don't want--that the emergency trach. done at beach might have injured his esophagus and they will have to sedate and go in to look at it. Poor guy...i have been reading all this stuff on internet about LP (laryngeal paralysis) and i am not sure what to do now.

I just keep praying it will be irritation in his throat that will heal and then he will eat.:smile2:

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
