So here's the situation. I was on 1000 mg of metformin 2x, 4 mg of Glimepride, and 10 mcg of Byetta 2x a day before surgery. After surgery, my sugar rocketed up to 300 in the hospital. I was sent home on insulin with a dosing schedule, but they eliminated the Glimepride and Byetta. My numbers started coming back down once I was home and even good down to around 120 for fasting in the morning. Even once I started on solid foods (I'm 8 weeks out now) the readings were good. Then about 2 weeks ago, the numbers started creeping back up. They had been running in the low 200's in the morning again. This morning was my lowest in a while at 190. I've been following my diet pretty well and not eating a lot of carbs, so I'm not sure what's going on. I thought VSG was supposed to help my sugar reading. Is anyone else experiencing this? I feel so lost.

Do you track your food? Maybe the protein drinks you are drinking contain a lot of sugars, have you been eating something that contains high sugar? Yogurt can contain a lot of sugar if your not careful. Even though you are not eating a lot I would still really watch the sugar content. Hope you figure this out soon.

I am having the same problem. I have lost 30 lbs., I still take one of my meds, duetact, and my readings are 160 to 170 . Before surgery they were always 95 to 105. This is one of the main reasons I did the surgery. I guess I better cal my regular dr. I hope we get straightened out!!

I'm glad I'm not the only one. This was also one of the main reasons I had the surgery. I have been very careful of what I am eating and/or drinking. My protein drinks are very low carb, so I'm not sure what is going on.

I also had that complication in the hospital- sugar went up over 300 under anesthesia. I was sent home on Metformin, but I don't test my blood sugar every day.

I am also having trouble with BS, my morning Bs has been in the low 200's since I've been home. While in the hospital I was in the 300's and they were only giving me small doses of insulin 4-6 units of humalin R. I am highly insulin resistant and normally took 23 units of u500 and 30 units of Lantus.. I saw my Endo he put me on a scale for Humalin R and 26 Lantus, my lowest has only been 185.

Everyone's answer is it may take time, and I should significantly reduce or eliminate insulin. We shall see...

I was given inslun 1 day in hospital then went home on nothing. When I eat good veggie n good meats I stay close to 100, but when I changed to protein podwer with 3g carbs it was good change and the gummie vit had to go, it would spike my sugar, I am over a yr out n I am battling lows, my sugar gets down to 46 if I dont eat every 2 hrs. I eat all the time, im below goal

this was a good topic for me to read, because I have been worrying about some of the same things as others...I am only a week out and am still on a liquid diet--consuming very few calories...I thought for sure my glucose level would be normal or might even get lower than normal...that has not been the case so far one of my primary reasons for having VSG was to try to resolve my diabetes...my levels got high one time in the hospital, and I needed 2 units of insulin...since I've been home, I haven't yet taken any of my meds (I was on 1000 mg of metformin twice daily with 40 units of Lantus daily)...my dr said I can stay off the meds as long as my levels average no higher than 150...so far they have been a little higher than than during the day (160s) but even got to 200 once today...I guess if they don't go down, I will have to start back on some of my meds...I am trying not to get down about this while I am still only 1 week out from surgery, but it's hard

Have you gone back on your byetta? My diabetic specialist wants me to eliminate my victoza (very similar to byetta LAST). Byetta and victoza have been shown to help with weightloss. They can help the body to regulate both high and reactive low blood sugars.

Make an appt with your pcp or whoever deals with your blood sugars, this is not our surgeons area of expertise, and the hospitals usually stop these type drugs since they usually don't carry them. ( they told me to bring mine from home).

I am 4 weeks post op today and my bs has been all over the map. But I know to an exact number how many carbs I've had as well as Protein and fat and sugars and calories. I have never been this exactly controlled with such weird readings. Did a little researching and found some evidence hat the liver is trying to dump all that stored glucose in reaction to all the starvation. I am finding it amazingly difficult to eat the damn 600 calories and get in the protein needed, but the surgeon said I have a fatty liver (goes with the rest of me I guess but still rude). I'm hoping the liver will let go of all the stored glucose-- am on sliding scale of Humalog and still take all the same oral meds. Have had one instance of bottoming out first week I was home but a glass of skim milk took care of it. Hang in there everyone-- our road is harder and longer to travel but we will still get to the destination of Better Health.

I also agree that the elevate glucose is the liver reacting to less calories and doing what it always has done--liver dumping!

With time it will all mellow out...the liver will realize it wont with this battle...the sleeve will work and do its thing!

I am very fortunate that my diabetes is under control right now. My husband is diabetic but refuses to have this procedure. So I have him take cinnamin and chromium piccalate. He also doesn't eat any breads, pastas, rice, or potatos and he is having to take less insulin now. So as a precaution, i am also taking cinnamon caps and chromium piccalate for my blood sugar problems even though I don't have any anymore. I take it because my A1C is in the 6 range and I want it in the 5 range.

low blood sugar doesn't keep the wt off or make u thin. my lowest wt was 130 lbs, i am about 140lbs now, 130 was to low for me, at 130 i felt sick, weak, and tired, now at 140lbs i ride my mountain bike at least 30 min a day,at about 14 mph, and i am active, i don't take naps all the time like i used to,, i'm not sick as much now, i feel healthy. i have to stay on top of the blood sugar because it makes me feel bad. even thou i am a healthy wt i am active, i have a mostly hard body from cycling now, i have damage from being diabetic ( since 1998) i have neuropathy, my blood pressure gets real low, my pulse races sometimes, i was in hospital with what felt like a heart attack, my pcp has recommended a angiogram. he thinks that my chest pain is sign of a heart attack to come. now like i said the damage has been done from being diabetic, i also had high cholesterol since i was 20 yrs old, my father died at 40 from heart attack and diabetes, i believe my VSG will extend my life and i will have a better life now than if i stayed fat. and i look great in size 4 pants after they shrink

an update from me--now at about 6 weeks out...at about 2 weeks out I started taking half of a metformin pill each morning...since then, my glucose levels have been very good; and in fact a few times it has dropped almost too low...I am tempted to try to go again without meds, since now my average level is way lower than the 150 my dr told me to stay under...what do y'all think? my alternative is to wait until I see my PCP for my six-month checkup in August before I doing anything differently
