Newgrandmother

Isn't it weird how everyday its a new leaning experience with food?

I tried Peanut Butter the other day and did nit like the taste it left in my mouth and I used to love peanut butter.

So what have your docs instructed y'all with regards to taking delayed release medications or extended release medicines? I have been having some gnarly problems this past week with the burning and spiky, stabbing pain in my chest as well as the horrible taste in my mouth. I am assuming it is reflux although in my 18 years of having a hiatal hernia and GERD, I have never suffered like this. And usually stuff is coming up in the back of my throat but now it is not. So weird. Anyway, the doc put me on Pepcid AC 4 times a day which is doing absolutely nothing for my issues. I am so tired of crying and being woken up every night several times a night with pain and burning. I have some Prevacid here that I was going to try but it says it is the 24 hour version and extended release so I am scared to take it. Do y'all prefer Prilosec over Prevacid? SOMETHING has got to change quickly before I put a fist through the wall. I am back to having 100% regret that I ever had this done and I am 3 weeks out. I never expected this much trouble recovering from a surgery as all my other surgeries have been problem free. I am starting to wonder if my esophagus is closing or something, The stuck feeling is getting worse rather than better which is making my already difficult time of getting fluids down even worse. Feel like I am getting dehydrated but don't want to call the doc on the weekend. I am just so sad....

Well the good news is that my stall is over and i have lost 5 lbs this week...bad news...i had my first vomiting episode and i don't know why! I made myself two scrambled eggs with a little cheese. I sat down to eat and i was two bites in when it was like instant...OMG MOMENT...and i went to the bathroom. I don't know if the egg got stuck or something because i didn't chew it enough but it sucked!! At least it did not hurt at all. Felt absolutely fine afterwards its weird.

@Momto 3....sorry you are having these issues. Praying things get better for you soon. I am 19 days post op and still having problems getting my Fluid intake in and am still able to get only 2-3 bites of food in and then that horrible stuck feeling hits. I really hope this gets better soon!

That's way too much pain!! Time to call your surgeon. Personally, I can take Prilosec (or equivalent) twice/day and 2 Pepcid AC as needed. I am not having a hard time, though. Definitely, you should not be feeling this bad. Make the call!

As for extended meds, I have no restrictions.

OMG! I feel like a pig. Everything I eat especially dinner I have to burp but its not a burp and then it's over oh no I keep burping and it gets louder and louder its embarrassing. Has anyone else experience this before? What am I doing wrong?

I've also had a dull ache in my tummy. Wonder what that's from.

No I haven't. In fact I use to take pride in my belches :) (sorry- huge family and apparently we have no pride). Anyway- my point being I only do little burps. Totally disappointing.

Yep, met too. Burp all the time. I think it's just we take in air when we eat, like everyone, but our tiny tums are just so tiny that there isn't room for air and food, and the air's got to go. Burping all the time....feel like Shrek!

Okay, went to Busch Gardens Williamsburg on Saturday.....cried a little cause I'm not far enough out from surgery to ride rides (only three weeks). And most of the rides would not be friendly to recent surgerized folks like me...too many forces pulling and stuff. I did get to go on a few. I love the teacups. But the rest of my family had fun. Okay, the worst part, I got too hungry. We sat down to eat lunch and I think I ate too fast (not much) or didn't chew enough, or whatever, but luckily we were right next to the restrooms, because I had to go in there and vomit.....twice. And hard. I felt so stupid. I should know better by now. And I also think there are things I just can't eat yet. And of course you aren't allowed to bring food into amusement parks. And let's be honest, who wants to bring a cooler, leave it in the car and then hike the 5000 miles back to the car just so you can eat something? But hey, the funnel cake with warm apples, carmel sauce, ice cream and whipped cream seemed to go down and stay down well.....at least the three bites I had of it.

Sorry to those of you having reflux/heartburn issues. Not fun. Talk to your doc again. Could it be you're eating to close to bedtime? Or does it help to prop yourself up higher in bed? Wish I had the answer for you all. Hang in there.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
