What To Tell Them?

Recommended Posts

So.... I will be on the full liquid phase when I weekend with my step-dad, sister and brother-in-law. I won't be telling them about surgery (can't stand the judgement I know I'll get) but KNOW they will wonder why I'm only cosuming liquids. Any ideas on excuses I could give? Help?

Tell them you're on a new diet that only allows liquid for a few days. Or tell them you're not feeling well and need to be on fluids for a few days. Tell them you think you're coming down with something and have no appetite.

If they notice, you could say that you've decided to get healthy. You are doing a high Protein, low carb diet and are exercising. It's the truth, minus the surgery info!

Good luck to you.

I didn't/havn't told any of my siblings or close family members about my surgery (12/8/11). Since I have always been on the heavy side of the scale and always trying different diets, they havn't really questioned the weightloss....i guess they assume I finally found a diet that works for me.

So, you can say you are trying a liquid diet? My daughter does those health food stores' colon cleanses, and has to do liquids for the first week....maybe you can use that excuse?

well i hate to disagree with everyone sweetheart but u know what .... u should tell them i mean after i while when they see ur results and no one can judge u for it ..., its the results that matter , i even told my almost friends that i had the surgery cuz sooner or later they will know the truth ....... when i go to bed i sleep like a baby cuz im an open book and every 1 is respecting me for it ,plus if may say u have alot of beautiful features in your face once the fat go away u will be sizzling hot ,,, and everyone will let a hot person get away with it :P ps : ur current weight and ur goal weight already promotes a very successful weight loss , u have 70 pounds to lose ..... lose them slowly :) .......iv lost 110 in 6 months and thank god still no saggy skin but i got away with it cuz im a big guy 6.3 ft .......so put a plan to lose 70 pounds on 9 months would be ideal

I ended up traveling with a co worker this week and knew that I would not be able to hide my liquid diet so I bit the bullet and sent out the following email to the team last night. Only positive replies have been received but I am not naive enough to think that I have not been a topic of conversation today.

Hi Team

As most of you know, I have been struggling with my blood glucose levels for some time. The highs and lows are becoming more unpredictable. I have been working with my PCP and we have a plan in place. I will be going out on a month’s leave as of Sept 19. There is a surgery that has been successful in many (unfortunately not all) situations such as mine. It is called a sleeve gastectomy and involves removing a portion of my stomach. I have done all the pre requirements (dietician, EDG, cardiac stress test, psych visit, blah, blah, blah) and am sitting on go for the surgery. My hernia will be repaired at the same time.

Along with the lovely benefit of weight loss, many improve cholesterol, triglyceride, blood pressure as well as the glucose levels. At the moment it is the most reasonable option that I have. My goal is to empty my pill box!

I am currently on a pre op diet that is hideous – Protein Shakes only until the surgery. You need to feel sorry for Jesse as we have ended up traveling together next week and I may be crumpy. Two weeks after the surgery is also only liquids and then soft food is reintroduced to my new, smaller stomach. I believe that I will call her “Dolly” since I have no daughters or grand-daughters to bestow with that favorite name. When all healing is complete I will be able to eat all foods again, just in smaller portions. The goal is to eat Protein first, then your veggies!

I am looking forward to improving my quality of life with better health. I do not want to be looked upon as the poster child for this surgery (much too much responsibility for me!!) but will be happy to answer any questions that you may have about it. My surgeon has done over 4000 of these so I am very comfortable with my decision.

I'm saying I'm having surgery to repair a stomach ulcer. For some time before the surgery, I have to have a liquid diet to prepare. After the surgery, I have to wean myself slowly back to solid food while the stomach is healing. Oh and hey, I'm losing weight. Nows a good time to add in exercise and a healthy diet...

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
