Pre-Op And Already Failed... :...(

Recommended Posts

Surgery is scheduled for September 4th....I started pre-op liquids and shakes and done ok on first day....but second day I had raging headache and felt so much hunger pains...i caved in and ate. I am eating salads (lettuce only with little dressing) and some carbs...yesterday I broke down again and had a few ounces of turkey with dressing and mashed taters (Boston Market larger platter shared 3 ways)...I am trying to stay on track today but am scared that I might cave in again....I have removed myself from situations where I might get tempted and I save a Protein Shake for my night time snacking....will this affect my surgery date? I am afraid of telling the doctor...also one of my friends said she ate all the way up to the surgery and nothing happened (wish she never told me this....). I am scared that I will continue to eat and than not be able to have the surgery....any input on how I can stop this eating!!?? TIA

You CAN do this!!!! Nothing tastes good enough to have your surgery cancelled!!!! It IS painful and hard to do the pre op liquids, because you still have a full sized stomach. I PROMISE you it will be so much easier once surgery is done. Just push through it. Keep yourself busy. Suck on some sugar free candies. Have sex a lot. Whatever you have to do to not eat. It would be better for you to have an extra Protein Shake than eat what you're not supposed to eat. If your liver is not out of the way, you run the risk of either a cancelled surgery, or an open incision. You can do this!!!

My doctor isn't even putting me on a liquid diet before surgery. Mine is on September 4th too. I am eating healthy meals and watching my calories, but no liquids. I am sure it won't effect your surgery date. Just do the best you can and remember this is why we are having surgery, because we need a little extra help.

I am sorry you are having trouble but you CAN do this! I only had to do two days of liquid...thank goodness. I would do Protein Shakes if you need to, they are pretty filling. Best of luck to you!

I haven't had surgery yet, but I like Dooter's advice!

I always say you should follow doctor's orders. They do have the medical background and they aren't just telling us to do these tough things because they want to be mean or on the safe side. You will find on many threads here that EVERYONE is different and just because your friend ate right up until the day of surgery doesn't mean that will work out for you. I'm only giving my opinion, of course, but if I were you I would forget about the last couple of days and concentrate on doing what the doctor ordered from now on. Don't beat yourself up about what already happened, just change the future. After all, that is what we are all here to do...change our future! I know it is TOUGH!! Good luck!

I agree with Carol's comments - you want to follow your doctor's orders, but don't kill yourself about it. I also "failed" at my preop diet, and I was terrified the surgery would be cancelled, but it wasn't. Do the best you can, and talk to your doctor about it. Getting your Protein in, drinking lots of Water, those are all important things to get your body used to the low calories. See if you can get your doctor to talk you through the benefits of the pre-op diet - lowering your visceral fat to make the surgery go easier is a good thing to work toward. Messing up once isn't going to ruin things, but introducing those carbs into an un-carbed system makes it even more miserable going forward. sugar free popsicles and Jello should be acceptable, and are wonderful ways to satisfy the urge to snack.< /p>

Good luck! The fact that it's so hard to do it is why we are getting the surgery, but try to persevere.

I agree with 7carol13. Quit beating yourself up. We didn't get in the position to need this surgery without food issues. It is TOUGH! Nothing could be harder right now. Drink extra protien shakes, the higher in protien the better. Fill up on Water. Drink lots of herbal teas, hot and cold. Just do one day or even one hour. You can do anything for an hour. Be proud of yourself when that hour is over. Next hour, new goal. You CAN do this.

I ran Soup through my blender and then strained it with a fine strainer. It was still liquid but it was SOUP!!

Everyone is different so the Doc evaluates each on a case by case. Mainly for larger people it is for the liver to shrink for surgery. Yes, it is very hard to do but it also prepares you for the coming days after surgery.

when I was on the liquid diet I was allowed no sugar fudge pops, sugar free pudding, and Jello, as well as real liquidy soups....after the first week my doc said it was ok to have one string cheese a day and one egg a day as well. just do your best....and make sure that you do all liquids at least 2 days before the surgery so that you can have your poop shoot all cleared out...lol You can do this! best of luck and wishes! ((hugs))

Big hug for you! We are all the same or we wouldn't be here. Try your very best. You can do it. If you make a mistake just pick up and forge on! This is the BEST decision that you will ever make for yourself. :)

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
