Hello everyone. I am worried. I was banded on June 28. It's been three weeks. I lost 11 pounds during my pre op 5 day liquid diet and 6 pounds since surgery ( post op liquid diet). needless to say, ALL of my weight loss has been due to liquids! I am walking 2.5 miles every day on the treadmill ( for an hour). My concern is that the scale is not moving! I am still on mushy food, but I know that I'm doing well following portion size. I am worried that my doctor will fill me on Monday, July 22 and that it will be too tight. I'm so confused, because I feel that considering what I used to eat to what I'm eating now, my weight should be decreasing. Maybe I'm worried because I have been reading no weight loss horror stories in this forum.

Hi there. I was exactly where you are but guess what? We are only supposed to lose 2 to 8 pounds per month (4 weeks) and the fact that you have lost 6 is right where you are supposed to be. More than likely depending on how you feel, your doctor may or may not give you a fill. You can't let what other posters post scare you. Keep following your instructions and you will be fine. You are already on your way. Keep going and good luck. :)

The first month to 6 weeks is for healing. It reads like you may be weighing yourself too often. If you weigh yourself too often, you might be setting yourself up for unnecessary negative feelings about a sense of lack of progress with weight loss.

And there are also weight loss plateaus which you likely will encounter along the way. The message here is that continuing to do the right things with healthy food choices, Portion Control, and exercise will in the long run allow you to lose weight.

The band has taught me the life lesson of patience like no other experience. Stay the course, and you will see your progress.

First, congrats on the loss so far. You are right on track. Second, do not worry about your fill on Monday. Your doctor should discuss with you what you have been eating, portion sizes, food types, etc. From that information he/she will decide the amount of the fill.

As you get fills the BIGGEST lesson is how to eat. Even today (18 months banded) I have to remind myself to take small bites, chew like crazy and wait about a minute between bits. This is the biggest obstacle most of us face and if we don't do it we have issues with eating and feel like we are too tight.

I was banded on 6/28 as well and lost 15lbs the first 2 weeks and now I'm at a freeze but I had my hubby hide the scale.. I'm not giving up just yet! We can do this!

I was banded on July 1. No pre op diet. Have lost 11 pounds and scale has not budged in days. Not sure if I'm eating enough and that's why I'm not losing. I see the nut tomorrow so we shall see. I also need to start exercising! Feeling good though and happy that I'm banded!

Losing weight with or without the band is and will never be a linear line that declines every day or week. Weight lost the first 4 weeks is mostly excess fluids retained by fat cells. During this phase if you can manage to burn 500 calories/day more than you consume you will lose 1 lb of fat each week. This does not mean the scale will go down 1 lb. You may retain fluids from too much sodium, TOM, stress and many other reasons but, your clothes will start to fit looser and you'll find you're more limber and active.

Once you start exercising enough to build muscle the weight loss may stall for weeks or even months depending on the type of exercise you choose. Watch this video and it's self explanatory:

I went on a mainly liquid diet for over a month due to food just making me sick. I tracked my calories/fat/carbs/protein on my fitness pal. I found that while on liquid, I was getting way more Protein and more calories than when I switched over to food. When I started eating the protein and keeping the calories up to 1000, I started losing again. Of course, that is just how my body works....not sure it works for everyone. Good luck!

What were you taking for the calories to be up to 1000 with just a liquid diet?

I was having 4 Protein Shakes and one meal of Protein and salad/veggie and 2 servings of fat. Calories were falling between 900-1000 per day.

To add some humor here, if I had lost the weight during my band journey simply based on calories in and calories out, I should physically be nonexistent at this point ;)

It can be frustrating as hell to do everything right and see no results, but if you keep on the right path, at some point the results WILL happen.

I've heard various theories about weight loss and how it's so finicky- the muscle vs fat idea (which is not to say possible over time but In a short amount of time you are not going to be adding pounds of muscle), the idea that your body can hit plateaus based on remembering the weight it was at previous times in your life, etc.

Whatever the reason, the body will catch up. I've gone through times when I went for a couple months with minimal results and then all of a sudden I would be down 10lbs.

Keep your head in the game and dont stress about when the weight will come off. It's a gradual process and one that will surely be worth the effort.

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
