Stretched pouch

Recommended Posts

Do you know if you can have your pouch stretched and your food can still get stuck? Sometimes it feels like it, I have symptoms of stretched pouch, pain in the left shoulder but I can't eat much and some food gets stuck. I have that pain very often ever since the surgery so I never thought it's a problem. I have an appointment with my doctor next week but until then did some of you experienced something similar? Please help!

Why do you think your pouch is stretched? What symptoms are you experiencing?

wow, when i read about the pain in ure left shoulder, i found that really interesting. i can tell u that as i am typing this, i have "some small" pain in my left shoulder right now and i've had 2 cups of tea!... my surgery was March 29th 2013~ I've never had pain in my left shoulder before this surgery. NOW, when i eat normal or drink a lot of Water for example; the pain really sharpens and uncomfortable. my doctor had no clue but his nurse said she heard it from other patients after the surgery. it's the weirdest thing and i have yet to get the REAL connection. But it's my shoulder that tells me to "stop".

also, i've only had 2 small fills. right now i'm not losing weight, i'm maintaining- i have an appointment for a 3rd fill in 2 weeks.

as far as the stretched pouch, i wish i could help, i'm still learning and educating myself as well. i can say that their is definitely way more to this than i was told. They do their best educating us but obviously their is a lot more to find out- Best of Luck

Jeanne :-)

I totally get the same pain in my shoulder and my chest. I am still on the liquid diet and I do sip slowly. I am wondering if I am suppose to take breaks between each sip or if each sip should be about a cap full of Water. in the past 6 days I have only drinked about 2oz of water and maybe 2oz of chicken broth. I can't seem to get anything down. I am afraid to force it because I do not want to purge. Also does anyone know if they pre-fill your band when you first get it?

As far as your question pertaining to a pre-fill most Dr.'s won't put in any amount of Fluid at the time of surgery, but some Dr.'s do. So the only one that can answer if you had any Fluid put in at your surgery would be your Doc or nurse. Hope that is what you were talking about.

Some docs do put in Fluid when they area installed. Mine came with 3cc.

However, since you don't say how far postop you are, its hard to tell why you might think you have stretched your pouch. If you are still less than 6 weeks postop, the shoulder pain is still gas from surgery. It can still flare up even 6-8 weeks out.

If you think you are stretched BC you can eat more than you think you should you need to look at what you are eating...if its sliders, then of course you can eat more than you should.

May be gas?

When did you have your surgery? If it was fairly recently, it could very well be the gas from surgery to inflate your abdomen. I know I had pain in my left shoulder for weeks but it finally subsided.

I was just reading one website http://drsimpson.net/fills/Lap-band-problems/food-stuck-pain/food-stuck-pain-after-eating.html that's were I got my idea. I'm so afraid of stretching my pouch, when you taking about the pain in your left shoulder I have one still, one year after my surgery and one more pain I have maybe some of you have it as well, my port "hurts" Every time I drink more Water, more then a sip, about a 6-8 oz I can feel my port right under my skin, on the left side and it hurt, it gets hard. Maybe it sounds funny, but I always had it and they told me it's OK Does any one else is experiencing same symptoms?

Yes, I too can feel my port, but only when I over eat. Feels like it is "pulling", can be quite painful.

Yes, my pouch has been stretched a couple of times but I didn't know it until we did a fluro to make sure everything was well and it wasn't. I had been stuck a couple times when it was stretched. My PA took a cc of Fluid out and I was put on liquids for a week, then mushies, and then solids. I was so scared I think I did liquids for two weeks and mushies for the next two until I had my appointment. I was back to normal.

Shoulder pain can actually be a soft stop for some people. So it doesn't always mean it's a sign of a stretched pouch. If everything's ok, then maybe it is your soft stop, which means it's probably a good idea to stop eating before you get to that point.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
