Liquid Stage Recipes

Recommended Posts

So I'm dying on the clear liquid diet. All I've had for 5 and a half days is chicken broth and jello....so about the egg drop soup....do you just not eat the egg whites?? I love egg drop Soup and now I want some so I hope someone replies quickly. :girl_hug: I'm just trying to figure out why the egg whites are ok on the clear liquid stage. Please tell me somehow they are before I eat my table. I'm so hungry.

Hi,

I was just banded one week ago today. broth does get pretty boring!!! I like the broth from the cup o noodles. I usually warm them up then throw out the noodles and stuff on top. Then with my broth I add a squirt of lemon or lime and a dash of pepper and sometime tapatio (hot sauce) Its been getting me through the week. I am going to try the drop egg recipe and add some lemon and hot sauce.

As for Starbucks I found getting a Iced Shaken Green Tea Unsweetened then adding splenda is delicious.

Most chinese restaurants will make an order of Egg drop soup---with no egg!!! Sounds silly, but it is a pretty common request apparently.

My Dr. explained it to me saying that when they band you they pull the lower stomach up and over the band to hold the band in place. They put several stitches in to hold it. When your stomach senses solids in the stomach, it goes to work, producing extra acids, and digesting, when it digests it squeezes and moves the food around, similar to a kneading motion. It does this to break the food down, and push it through to the intestinal tract. When you are newly banded, they do not want the stomach attempting to digest anything, because it can pop the newly placed stitches. It is not like stitching your hand---that they then tell you to keep dry---it is not dry---so it takes an extended time to heal. A popped stitch can allow the band to drop in one area....commonly known as a slipped band. It can also put it in a bind when it heals, leading to blockages, or erosions.

I don't know if it is as dangerous as it was made out that it could be to me---but it wasn't something I was willing to take a chance with. Hang in there---try the egg drop---strain it a bit if nothing else.

I went for my one week post op yesterday and I went with a big list of things from this thread that I wanted to start having. I was shot down on about 90% of it. My dr is STRICT about the liquids! Just wanted to let everyone know though. I was told no fruits, no Peanut Butter, no meats. Basically I can have cottage cheese blended with Tomato Soup, and I can have any kind of Soup I want as long as it has no meat and it's blended til smooth. Last night I had Progresso broccoli cheese potato soup and OMG it was soooooo good. :) Anyway, just wanted to share that. :mad: I'm keeping the recipies for the mushie stage though! Can't wait!

My doctor instructed me to stay on Clear liquids from day one to day 7. From Day 7 only an addition of yogurt (plain).

I made soups:

1) chopped filet mignon, onion, red peppers, garlic, mushrooms and black pepper. Add low sodium beef broth. Then add chopped broccoli. Simmer for about 2 hours. Come back and pour through a strainer. It's delicious!

2) chicken cut up into strips, onion, pepper, carrots, peas, mushrooms, pepper. Add low sodium chicken broth. Add poultry seasoning. Strain.

This makes alot of extra broth, and the flavors are great and filling.

The cooked part I gave to my husband. He loves it!

I finished if off with a pineapple flavored popscicle. For a snack I had a sugar free orange Jello.

~~~
Today, I started phase two and ate a non fat plain yogurt. Additionally I added a soft boiled egg. I mean...it's about the same consistancy, both are Protein. Good for healing and it was really great to chew something!
For lunch my broth. For dinner egg drop Soup. I seem to be able to digest it all.
~~~

I'm on Clear Liquids the first week too and those pineapple sf pops are fantastic!!!:clap2:

I'm not convinced anybody has to be 100% on the liquid diet. But that's just me......

For pre-op diets I agree with you completely. For post-op I fully disagree. The harder the stomach has to churn and work to heal the more chance for tearing sutures. Clear liquids do not cause the stomach to churn and digest food. Full liquids do not cause it to work so hard.

We only have one solid chance at this and to cheat when we are talking a month out of a lifetime, it just doesn't make sense.

I've been full liquids for a week now (8 days to be exact. Not that I'm counting.....). Like BB said, this is the time to listen to the doctor. I do NOT want to screw up what I paid a lot of money and time to get done!

One week post-op and I already decided I need to get creative with broth. Thought I'd share:

chicken enchelada broth: Mix chicken broth with Uninjury chicken flavored Protein supplement, green enchelada sauce, light sour cream, blend in Magic Bullet, and heat.

Beef Strogonoff broth: Mix beef broth with worchestershire sauce and light sour cream, blend in Magic Bullet, and heat.

These were so yummy! I bought some cheese Soups today that I thought would be good to throw in with the enchelada broth too - maybe some avacado too.

I'm going to make beef broth with red enchelada sauce, cheese Soup, and sour cream tomorrow. Still have 3-4 weeks pureed to do, so I'll get to have lots more fun with broth!

Another good one I had tonight: Medifast Tomato Soup mix, 1/4 c Tomato basil feta cheese, and 1/4 c Contadina pizza sauce, blend, and heat. Enjoy!

I found a new recipe yesterday that took me 5 mins to make today and it was sooooooo good!!!! I have never had pea Soup before but it's some good stuff!

boil 1 cup chicken broth reduce heat to medium add 1 cup frozen peas, let simmer for about 5 mins

pour it in the blender with 1/4 cup sour cream and blend until smooth

very liquidy for the full liquids stage :)

yum!

I'll second that. I payed way too much and sacrificed way too much to screw this up. :)

I do not like pizza, but my fiance loves it, and orders it several times a week.. When I have tried liquid diets in the past (to lose weight, not as part of this surgery), I would make chicken or beef Soup with the seasoning from Papa John's, which is delicious.

The seasoning packets are .15 each and 1 packet lasted for 4 Soups for me. If you have family that eats Papa John's, I'd suggest getting a stock.

So I took bouillion cubes, heated them in a bowl in the microwave with Water, when it was done, sprinkled the seasoning on, to my liking (it's pretty spicy).

I planned on trying this when I'm in my liquid phase!

So, i'm 4 days post-op...and starting to get my appetite back. Was really hungry... wished i could have potatoes or something carby.

I got creative. Took a can of Goya Black Bean Soup to my Cuisinart and blended the hell out of it. Then, i added 1/2 can of fat free chicken broth. I heated it on medium-high heat...but not for too long. Don't want to cook the moisture out or you'll end up with too much starch.

Had it a little while ago... VERY satisfying. Totally hit the spot. I'll be sure to retract this recipe if I find I have any physical problems from it.

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
