December 2012 --- Band Buddies Unite!

Recommended Posts

Do not get discouraged if you stop losing weight while on mushies! The band was built to help you lose weight eating solids!

You are still healing! It is not until 6-8 weeks post-op that you start getting fills that you will see the weight come off!

Also, Water makes a big difference, drink 64 oz a day and exercise! Don't eat over 4 oz.- 3 x a day even if you can and don't snack! !

This is doctors advice and if you follow it, you will lose!

Please don't get discouraged, this is the way it is!

I found some really good milk free Protein at whole foods called Vega. I was banded on the 26th and finally got more than 1/2 the protein in today, I'm feeling real hopeful. The gas pains in the shoulder are'nt there every time I eat, so that's a big plus. I just need to focus on getting the 64 oz and the 70-80 grams of protein..I found some yummy organic low sodium Soups called imagine and I mix 1/2 an envelope of Unjury unflavored protein. The soups are potatoe, split pea, butternut squash, black bean, pumpkin they're full of Vitamins. Thanks everyone for sharing.

Hi all, I am having a better day today. Day 7 post op. Only taking 2 pain pills a day. I am on pureed foods now and was starving most of the day yesterday. I have 3cc in a 10cc band that was put in at surgery. Anyways, I had 600 calories by 3 p.m. yesterday and was feeling like I could not make the 1000 calorie limit. So it said I could have whipped veggies. I have a bag on mixed veggies from Sam's Club. I steamed them for 3 extra minutes and added a cup of almond milk and tried to whip....did NOT work. So, I put them in my blender and made pureed veggies. Let me tell you. A half cup of that and I couldn't even take a drink for 3 hours!!!! I thought my band maybe isnt working...it is! I was wrong! I didn't eat the rest of the night last night! LOL. I did end up having a small glass of white wine at about 10 p.m. as that was the first time I felt even a liquid would safely go down. I thought surely I had gained weight...nope. Down to a new low!!! 205 lbs.!!!! I am not updating my ticker except with the Dr. office weights....

Is everyone using their own home weights to track weight loss or going by the dr. scales??? my scales first thing in the a.m. show I have lost about four more pounds than the dr. scales by the afternoon when they actually weigh me....?

Hi all!

I was banded on 1/31 so tomorrow I guess I can start thicker liquids like some creamy Soups and Dannon smoothies. I'm still a bit swollen but not near as much as earlier. I still have some gas pain, but that will be gone soon (I hope). I've been walking, stretching etc. and eating GasX so... I'll just have to let nature take it's course.

I am having difficulty with taking my regular medication. I take quite a few pills in the morning and I'm supposed to crush everything. I've been crushing my pills, but no matter what I mix them with I can hardly get them down because they are so bitter. Sometimes I can't get them all down because they make me gag.

The surgery center scheduled my next appointment a month out from my surgery. She said it would be for a fill. Does that seem strange? I thought perhaps they would want to see me prior to that to make sure I'm healing okay.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
