Update: pain felt like severe heartburn. At 1 am they gave me Tordol. This was like magic. It significantly decreased my pain. I don't know why the surgeon doesn't order this earlier on surgical day...it was a big help in my recovery. Am ready for something other than Water and ice...patience needed.

Congrats Tan ya!! I am pre-op from 9-13 and i can tell you what I did. My doctor gave me Prevacid - an antacid that dissolves on the tongue. I bought some baby food fruit that was on sale. If you take any meds, call you PCP and get your meds to liquids if possible. Your lap band surgeon should prescribe you RX for pain meds and nausea. I didn't know until a few days what was the plan was. Buy a pill crusher. Get a Blender Bottle and make sure it has measurements you can read. Get a food scale to weigh but you don't have to buy this until later. Make sure you have some loose pajamas or gown. Buy some Protein drinks. I got Atkins or EAS at Walmart that are ready made box drinks, because after surgery it is easy and fast to get it out of the fridge when I am feeling puny. I would buy any veggies or fruits to puree just yet but when you do, buy nothing with seeds or stringy like asparagus. Oh yeah, Flintstones chewable Vitamins or liquid Vitamins. You will need to clean yourself out or your doctor may tell you Clear Liquids for two days. I opted for the clean out the day before surgery and bough Magnesium Citrate at Walgreens and I had to take some Miralax as well. For post surgery at home I would start taking MiraLax every day until you have your first bowel movement. It took me 8 days for my first one because after surgery we aren't eating.

Hope this helps.....I have got a lot of good info from others and it has helped me a lot! Welcome to the new world!!

I started a NEW TOPIC on Protein Drinks so we can all put some good info on what is good, not so good, where to buy, etc. I'm still trying to figure this website out and some of it is confusing to me....lol

My stay after surgery I kept getting ice and sips of water....I never got heartburn but already had a lot of pain. I wished I was online because I had my iphone with me at the hospital. They usually give a pain med in your IV, first night I had a push button for pain. Sometimes they have to change meds that will work better for you. I'm glad they got your pain under control, that is a main key to your recovery. I took the ice and Water for two days and my doc said when I get home start the Protein drinks.

I had Dilaudid IV for pain but the Tordol worked the best. Just finished my second 1/2 mile walk. Had my barium swallow xray. Waiting to graduate to Jello, broth and popsicles in a few minutes. Will go home this afternoon.

Make sure they are the Gas X strips and I wouldn't worry too much about getting fruits and veggies yet. It will be a little while before you can have those and they will probably go bad before you can have them. I would think the hospital will give you pain meds but my dr. didn't give me any rx for nausea meds once I left the hospital so you may want to check if they will give you some for once you get home. I know I could have used some at home. Good luck!

Okay, this is a silly question but for those of you that are post-op and still on the liquid diets is there something that you can't wait to eat when you get on the pureed/mushies part? I am craving refried beans! It is the weirdest thing but that just sounds so good. I go to my post op on Tuesday so I am hoping to advance them so I can have some, lol. Just a silly question :)

I get my staples out on Wednesday and then start on pureed foods for 2 weeks. LOL, I don't like refried Beans, so I will ever crave them, they give me gas and I could imagine how that would make me feel right now. I'm wanting some clam chowder (strain the clams out) or baked potato Soup. This is the stage I will HATE cause I hate pureed foods but I'll get thru it.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
