POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by ukcatsfan,

how are you doing? This is our 1 week check point and I'm feeling much better today than in the past several days. I'm still sore at the port incision point and eating/drinking is slow but every day the process gets a little easier. Have you hit the scale yet to see how much you may have lost in just 7 days? I'm at 3 pounds down, 31 since the liquid pre op regiment and seeing a glimpse of the light at the end of this very, very long and narrow tunnel of weight loss. No more hill and valley losses and gains, just a consistent and straight path to a healthy and energetic life. Soon to be no more worrying about armless chairs, tight booths, seatbelt extenders on airplan…

I'm 8 days out from having the sleeve today and so far no real problems with it. Some acid burning sensation that usually goes away when I eat. Today though, it's the opposite. Whenever I eat, it burns. Every bite I take. It almost feels like heartburn but only when I take a bite. I'm eating the foods I should be. Have not cheated or anything like that. In fact I'm babying my sleeve because I'm paranoid about getting a leak. Anyone else have this feeling? Just wondering if I should be concerned. As I said, it just started today.

Hey Everyone, I have glue covering my incisions. I had surgery 5 days ago. My glue is starting to lift on my main incision. Has anyone else had this problem, or is it a problem? Everything looks like it is progressing normally. The glue coming up seems natural, but I am not sure. Any advice?

I am home today after having the sleeve on Tuesday. My surgery went well but I was in recovery for over 10 hours.. NOT due to a bad recovery..the hospital I was at didn't have a bed for me until after midnight it was horrible being down in recovery that long..and I was so grateful to get into a room. I'm doing ok, however, I am really tired and though the surgery went well, my stomach pain is like a bad bruise I am experiencing nausea and chest pains. It is hard to get in 50+ oz of Fluid, as it is now it's going on 5pm and I am at about 22 oz.. Has anyone else out there had the chest pain.. sharp..when you drink or try to even nibble on Jello. I'm told it can be from…

  6. Well I have been home since October 6th. I am on TPN and have a stent that will not come out for about 6 more months. I still have a drain, but the hole in my stomach is getting smaller and I am hoping that in another month or two it will be completely closed and then I at least get the drain out and can slowly start eating. I have not had a bite of food since before surgery in August!! I just got off of my atibiotics on Sunday and I am finally feeling like myself. I hate being hooked up to this drain and my central line, but I am home with my kids and starting to feel better! I appreciate everyone's thoughts and concerns. I have such a negative attitude about doin…

  7. Hello, I am 11 days post op and just noticed last night there is a hard bump under one of my larger incisions. There is no bump under the larger incision on the left side, just the right side. On Thursday night when I was getting into bed, I had a sharp pain in this same spot. It is about the same length as the incision and not very wide. My dr's appointment is Tuesday morning and I will definitely have him look at this. Has anyone had anything similar? Should I be worried? :help: Thanks for any help...

It has been a while since I was on here. I havent lost weight in a while. Insurance issues as well as not having a job anymore, really put a damper on my success. Anyway, I havent gained which is a good thing. Once you have no insurance to pay for the band any longer, youre treated differently with your surgeon, at least this is how I see it. And it happened. to me. I had a fill, about a month ago, everything was going great. I started the gradual loss of weight again. Well, last Friday, I started having acid reflux, and then my band got tight. So, For an entire weekend I did not eat or drink. Talk about not having energy, and a quick loss of 10 lbs. I was hurting, all ov…

Hello Everyone I have a quick question. I am having a very sharp burning pain paralell to my belly button. Its not constant. Its only when I sit down or try standing up. I am able to "poop" (sorry for being so blunt), and I am not experiencing any bleeding from there. I dont feel anything protruding that would feel like a hernia. Im not running a fever or feeling sick. I have been experiencing this for a few days now. I have tried calling my DR, but due to the holiday, there is no answer. The hospital is 100 miles away. Any advice? Thank you.

Hi Everyone. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I know I sure did and I was actually good. I am 5 weeks post op (Oct 23). I've had a problem going from the puree to the soft foods. I'm not getting enough Fiber in my diet. And let me tell you it hurts. Forgive the bluntness. I had to take 2 stool softeners and Benefiber in order to go. My question is this, what High Fiber Cereals do you eat?

I have gone through all of this and then when I finally get to eat I can't stop.... I am not hungry for food I just want something other than broth! What if......I go through this and dont' lose my weight? What if...it doesn't get any better when I can have soft mushies... Are any of you tattooed? Heavily? Moderately? I'm a tattoo artist, and I wonder what will happen to my tattoos after I lose weight. Most of my tattoos are on my arms, lower legs, chest, neck, etc. I haven't gotten my stomach or any really fatty areas tattooed. I know it's weird for someone that actually tattoos to be asking this question. And I know a 50lb weight loss or gain doesn't really tend to affect them. BUT I'm 245, and only 5'3....so I need or want to lose about 110lbs! That's a lot to change on my body. Do any of you have experiences to share????

I got banded on Wednesday! I'm doing pretty good. A bit sore but nothing too bad. I've had my gall bladder out and a c-section, and this was 10x easier than either of those! My tummy is rumbling, but I get full on the tiniest sips of water. It's such a strange sensation. Off to relax a bit and then attempt a shower. Thanks for all the support! Amy

I was banded Sept. 17 and went in for the first fill end of October. Nurse did the injection but I did not feel any restriction when drinking a little water. So she put 2 more CC's up to 6. I still didn't feel any restriction, but I really didn't know what to feel. I went back 1 month Nov. 25 and gained 4 lbs. I told the Dr. I was always hungry and had no restriction, so he chewed me out for cheating and then put 1.5 cc'.s more in. He noticed that there was nothing in the band as he started. He found out that none ever got into the band, therefore I had no real restriction. He went back in and put 6 cc's in and I tried to sip so water. I could not keep it down. So he…

Yesterday was my 5th day after being sleeved. I was so emotional yesterday. Not sure what was going on....self pity perhaps....I was in some pain...I was freezing..could not get warm..struggling with what to have on my clear liquid phase. I am finding I am sensitve to sweet...so jello and propell water is difficult to tolerate. I am trying to get all my fluids in and having difficulty with this. I also noticed that my sense of smell seems more sensitive. Smells I could tolerate before I cannot anymore. Is all this normal or have I lost it completely?:laugh0:

Hello wii fit plus users, I just got mine and I noticed you can customize your workout whether it be yoga, strength or combining predetermined wii workouts. I'm wondering if the customized workouts can be saved so that you can use it each morning until you want to switch things up. I can create a customized workout but it seems you have to "customize" it each time you use the wii. I guess I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything. Either way, this system is a blast!!!

Banded 11/23. I have been reading alot in this forum for the last month and one thing that perplexes me is the range of things different doctors tell people about diet, drinks, and exercise. My Dr had me on no real pre-op diet, Clear liquids only on surgery day, thicker liquids for one week, and mushie food for three more weeks before transitioning to regular food. This will all happen before my first fill. I have seen a wide range of others whose doctors are either way more restrictive or somewhat less restrictive. Use of coffee is one topic with different opinions. (mine does not prohibit it as long as I use nonfat milk). So my question is, where does common s…

I was banded Aug 11. Last night for the very first time while eating dinner I started to feel terrible pain at the bottom of my throat. I stopped eating and hoped it would go away - but this time the pain / tightness felt much different than anything in the past. It got to the point when it was even more painful every time I swallowed saliva. It just kept getting tighter and tighter to the point where I was spitting out my saliva rather than swallow. That did not help because just the air I was swallowing was making it tighter. Finally after a while (10 minutes) I felt like I was going to throw-up and did... but not much other than what looked like sticky saliva cam…

I can't begin to describe how blessed I have been this year. Before I was banded, I was lost. I would wake up most mornings and just say to myself "where do I even begin to dig myself out of this hole". Yes I was referring to the massive weight gain that I had in the past 2.5/3 years. I was falling into a depression but no one knew about it because I was putting up this front that I was the most confidence "fat chick", because I had to...it was my defense mechanism. May of 2009 rolls around and I am desperately searching on the internet for a surgeon to finance my surgery because I am a part time employee and full time student with no health insurance. I know that there have been threads on this site dedicated to NSVs, but I just wanted to add my own. Over the past weekend, I saw a commercial on tv for a very pretty watch. I mentioned the watch to my hubby and said that I might like it for Christmas. Well, my hubby took me to the local mall later that day to see if we could find the watch at one of the jewelry stores. We found the watch and I tried it on. IT FIT PERFECTLY! :frown: I have never been able to walk into a jewelry store, try on a watch, and have it fit... no extra links needed. I was sooooo happy the watch fit that my hubby bought it for me right then and there.

I am ashamed of what I tried to consume, but in the spirit of honesty, here goes: I had 2 chicken wings from Chinese take out, plus 1 1/2 scallion pancakes. WTH is wrong with me? Bad choices first of all, and then the quantity?? If I had stopped after 1 wing and 1 pancake I would have been fine, other than poor choice of course. I also am struggling with what solids i should try. PA said dark meat chicken and green Beans. Good, but what else? i am still having 2 mushy meals out of my 3 and that is NOT satisfying me at all. This question is for those who have been sleeved for sometime atleast longer than I have. Question: has anyone tried popcorn while on their journey? If so, what was your tummy's reaction. I asked because I enjoy watching movies and having myself a small bag of popcorn, slightly buttered, and I would like to know if having popcorn is a snack I'll have to do without for a while and how others popcorn lovers have dealt with it with their new sleeve. :001_rolleyes:

O.k. today was day 14 post op and I really haven't had many problems. I have a surgeon who moves you along extremely fast. Liquids for 2 days, mushies for 1 and then solids as tolerated. From what I have read most surgeons don't do that. Everything has gone well, but today both breakfast and lunch did not go down well. Both time were things I had eaten before, but they felt like they got stuck and I really had to try and not throw up. Any insight?
