I am finding I am sensitve to sweet...so jello and propell water is difficult to tolerate. I am trying to get all my fluids in and having difficulty with this. I also noticed that my sense of smell seems more sensitive. Smells I could tolerate before I cannot anymore. Is all this normal or have I lost it completely?:laugh0:

So sorry you had such a bad day. Hope today is better. When I had my lapband placed, I had the same thing happen to me a few days post op. I remember being in my bathroom looking down at myself and thinking "what the hell did I just do to myself". I work with several different people who have all had WLS and they all report the same feelings post op. All I can say is just hang on and it will be better. Take it one day at a time. Go for a walk or do something to take your mind off how you feel. Bundle up (don't know where you live and if it is cold there) and get outside. Even if you only walk for a block, it is good. In a few days, you will look back on this and know that you have made it through another step in getting healthy. Even with all the issues I've had with the band, I would do it again in a heart beat and am looking forward to being sleeved on 12/19.

This is all normal. As the weight starts coming off your metabolism drops and many of us feel colder. Wear layers. Many of us become intolerant of sweets. Dilute your clear fluids with water until they taste better. I have slight nausea and intolerance for some smells too. This is normal. It will help keep you from over eating so count it as a plus.

When I have a bad day I just take it easy...pamper yourself in some non-food ways.

Hey there Jenn,

I am 4 months post-op and I totally understand what you are going through. The most important thing is to breath and be patient. It is really easy to freak out early on. Your body is going through some major changes and your "lizard brain" (the instinctual part of yourself) is under the impression you are injured and starving to death. Just remember that your conscious part is in control and its good to acknowledge the feelings of frustration and everything, but to just breathe and try to be zen about everything.

I had extreme sensitivity to smells, tastes etc. I craved Soups and flavors I never did before, and couldn't stand other smells that I normally loved. You just need to go slow, sip your fluids. Go for some sugar-free flavor packs from the grocery store, and sugar-free jello. The ASS (Ahhh . . .So Sweet) effect wears off some after a couple months, but is still there for me to a certain extent. Think of it as a weight-loss aid, keeping you away from empty calories. The important thing is to keep hydrated, and to take small sips as often as you can stand them.

My best advice is to make sure you walk. I walked twice a day during recovery, in the morning and evening. Bring a friend at first till you know your strength, as you can tire quickly. Walking helps your body process all of the toxins in your system and you will recover faster from that than anything. Also, remember that rapid weight loss flushes all the fat-soluble toxins out of your system, so it can be hard on your kidneys. Walk, water and waiting, that's what the first 2 weeks are all about.

warm socks sweetie...layers, heating pad...whatever it takes. Force yourself to do some walking to stimulate circulation. Many others report highly sensitive sense of smell and intolerance of sweets so you're right on track!!! You can do this! Take short walks, short naps and sips of Water frequently. You've got this...you can do it. Encourage your body to heal, don't be shy.. ask for a back rub from someone that loves you. and last but not least....one day at a time!

You're totally normal. I couldn't tolerate anything sweet either immediately after surgery. I didn't suffer from being cold, but I live in Florida, and it was summer for the majority of my recovery.

As for Clear liquids, I loved the Celestial herbal decaf teas. They were fruit flavored, but NOT overly sweet at all. Also, I used chicken bouillion cubes for my broths. Warm liquids were better for me in the beginning, and I was tired of drinking just plain Water.

As for the heightened sense of smell, I still deal with this issue at over 5 months post-op. The smell of baby powder makes me want to vomit. The smell in most fast food places turn my stomach. It has gotten better, but it has not completely disappeared.

Keep sipping, take a short little walk, and rest when your body tells you it needs to rest.

Broth and water were my best friends. There was something really soothing about warm broth.

It is normal to be extra sensitive right after surgery. That happened to me too, artificial sweetners were the worst. I think the Protein soups were the best bet for me, and milk.

Did your surgeon send you home w/soups? You can buy them on line. I loved powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury unflavored and the Soup mix. It takes about a week to get it though.

Maybe you can call the surgeon's nutritionist for advice. They suggested I drink milk, if I couldn't tolerate anything else. And, she also suggested that most patients right out of surgery tolerated the warm soups/broth best.

Right now, the most important thing is to get in adequate hydration and protein.

Most of us have struggled with this. Even now, when I cheat and eat something from the fast food restaurants, it really does make me nauseated, the cheap ingredients, high fructose syrups, etc. Our stomachs are much more sensitive now.

Oh Jenn - reading this brought back such memories -- my smell was SO SENSITIVE following surgery -- thankfully that has finally dissipated -- however, the sensitivity to sweets still remains. As to all the other feelings, those are normal, too. Hang in there, each day will get better -- I promise!

Thank you so much for all the response. I dont feel so alone .....I thought what I was feeling was just me. Today was a better day for me...I managed to get in more liquids not as much Protein as I should. I only had about 10g of protein today.

I will definitaly dress in layers. I live in Alberta Canada so we are in our winter season. Still waiting on the snow though.

Seen my family doctor today. He gave me 2.5 months off of work. There would be no way I could do my job at this time. I work in a high stress job and my focus needs to be on my wellbeing right now. *hugs to everyone*

Jenn, I'm glad to hear that you had a better day. I was really cold at first too. My emotions were up and down and a struggle some days. Every day gets better. Just hang in there and you will feel better soon.

i was on a emotional high for some weeks i thought i would never get better but it did and it does and i'm wish more better days to you! (hugs)

I liked swanson's chicken broth best, and some of the celestial seasoning teas, like Tiffany said. Warm clear liquids were so soothing, small sips, burp between each sip. Cold liquids hurt my esophagus and just made me feel more chilled. I also wore lots of layers and loaded on the blankets because I could not get warm. That's all normal. It will pass.

Walking helps a lot too, even just walking around inside the house. I paced the hall, back and forth, when the weather did not permit me to walk outside. That keeps gas moving, raises your temperature a bit, and also helps lower the risk of blood clots. It is very important.

Before too long these early discomforts will be a fading memory and the pounds will be dropping off!
